This Week in Baseball

Recommended Posts

This is going to be an interesting series: The Braves, who will be playing rookies and giving Dan Kolb lots of innings v. The Fish, who quit last week.

How is this different from the rest of the season?

:D

I don't see how any kind of argument can be made that Carpenter isn't better than Willis.

And I'll be the first to admit Willis had an excellent year, minus a few very small rough spots.

Carpenter was more dominant while Willis was more of a leader, IMO.

Plus Carpenter is in the playoffs and Willis' last big loss, came in the 9th inning and resulted in his team's meltdown and dropping out of the WC hunt.

I wouldn't know who to pick between the two.

I'd like to say that Carpenter helped his team into the playoffs, but then again, how much of the Cardinals' dominance can be attributed to him? On the other hand, Willis, with near-to-identical stats, did everything in his power to get his team into the playoffs on both offense and defense. How much more can either guy do to help his team succeed?

Both guys have such a strong argument - I'm happy with either guy taking it.

EDIT: I wouldn't put it past the voters to ignore the rules and pick Willis because of his offensive contributions.

Carpenter

241.7 IP

2.83 ERA

204 H

18 HR

51 BB

213 K

Willis

229.3 IP

2.59 ERA

204 H

10 HR

53 BB

158 K

The only stat there in which Carpenter has a distinct advantage is strikeouts. There really isn't a clear-cut case for either.

Edit: Of course, I'm still annoyed that Clemens isn't even in the discussion these days.

Indians tie it up!

Edit: Damn. Boone hits into a Double Play. They're going to extra innings.

And if anyone gives a flying leap...San Diego attempts to avoid being the first team to finish below .500 in baseball and make the playoffs. They are scoreless with the Dodgers in the bottom of the 3rd...needing two wins to have a winning season.

Cubs hang on to win it! Astros only have a game on the Phils now.

This is great. I love that there are still three races undecided with only two games to go.

Man, this is how baseball should be. Cubs have been DONE forever, but I was pacing back and forth and a nervous wreck during the final innings of tonight's game. Mostly because I'd like to see Philly get the WC, but it'd be nice to see the Cubs at least end at .500. Whew, I'm spent.

Bottom of the 12th...White Sox and Cleveland still tied at 1.

Wow...this is awesome baseball now, been easy to get into it although my team has had their spot wrapped up for 2 weeks now.

How about you pinch hit and give Konerko or Dye a shot to give you a run? I know you don't wanna be killing your bullpen Ozzie!

edit: YES! THANK YOU GLOWD!

Belliard hits a solo HR to bring the score to 3-2. This has been an amazing game.

Edit: And now it's over, as Broussard immediately pops out.

Especially after they just complained for hours about how bad the lineup Ozzie put out there was.

Also, the squeeze play was botched. There was miscommunication and Willie Harris didn't begin to break for home. So, he was a dead duck.

At least this should end all the talks about who really deserves the AL Central. The White Sox officially completely just broke away from the Indians, so if Indians win the next two, they still fall 1 game short of the White Sox.

Oh, and don't get me wrong. Ozzie is still an idiot. But he's an idiot for putting Marte in games (or in tonight's case, leaving him in to start the 9th) and stuff like that. He is not an idiot for starting who he wants to start in order to get rest for his major players and trying a squeeze with a fast baserunner and a good bunter (even if it wasn't communicated properly).
