EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted October 9, 2005 Put Farnsworth in a tough home run park and he can be a terrific reliever.
The Czech Republic 0 Report post Posted October 10, 2005 I just don't know who to pull for in the playoffs this year though, since both of my teams have went home. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> You think you've got it bad? I'm a Cubs fan. My choices are the top rival Cardinals, second rival Astros, and crosstown rival White Sox. I have to pull for the Angels or Yankees, whom I'm hardly fond of. Baseball why has thou forsaken me
cabbageboy 0 Report post Posted October 10, 2005 Everyone always defends Farnsworth by pointing out all the times he doesn't fuck up. That's not the point with Farns. The majority of his appearances are without incident, but when he fucks up it's something of biblical proportions. Last year I swear he sent the Cubs reeling into a downward spiral they never recovered from in a couple of games vs. the Cardinals. Games where the Cubs were up like 8-3 and he would walk everyone, give up homers to So Taguchi and shit like that. What's sad is that back when the Braves got Farnsworth I DEFENDED IT. I rationalized if anyone could make something of this bum, it'd have to be Leo Mazzone and Bobby Cox. When he started racking up saves I thought he might be over his Cubs shittiness, but my brother had it pegged right: "When the Braves get in the playoffs, Farnsworth will do something to kill them." He's just a doomed, jinxed player. The sort of guy with a dark cloud over his head. Any team with Farnsworth is doomed.
Fökai 0 Report post Posted October 10, 2005 What's sad is that back when the Braves got Farnsworth I DEFENDED IT. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> They gave up two Double-A bodies for him. Their bullpen is much, much better off with him. He gave them a strong August and September. All signs point to the trade being a good one for the Braves. When he started racking up saves I thought he might be over his Cubs shittiness, but my brother had it pegged right: "When the Braves get in the playoffs, Farnsworth will do something to kill them." So in that situation, who do you put in? Kolb? Reitsma? Farnsworth was the closest thing we had to giving us two strong innings. I just feel bad for the guy. Bruiser Chong 0 Report post Posted October 10, 2005 Farns is a classic case of a guy having all the tools and little of the execution. People have been waiting for him to put it all together for years and he just doesn't seem like he's going to. Sure, he'll do fine in a pitcher's park, but few don't. Cabbage speaks the truth on his trials and tribulations with the Cubs. Those games he spoke of were damning to the team, as both came after the Cubs had held significant leads. The second of those games more or less put the Cubs out of the Central race, too. There were also countless times where he'd come in just to do mop-up duty and still get shelled. Guy's just one of those dude who couldn't put it all together, depsite having the talent to do so. Cubs seem to have a lot of those.
Kismet 0 Report post Posted October 10, 2005 Farnsworth was great for the Tigers. Of course that goes along with Al's point of a tough homerun park. Looking at the Tiger bullpen as of now, I'll take him back. Don't have to worry about having a bad outing in a post-season there. Looking up his stats, he was 1-1 with a 2.32 ERA in 46 games/42 innings for Detroit, with only 1 homerun given up and 55 strikeouts. Whatever else he was in Chicago and Atlanta, I would take that back in Detroit.
Guest Wart Report post Posted October 10, 2005 I just got back from the game a couple of hours ago(drove in from out of town). Interesting to note, that the guy who caught the Berkman grand slam also caught the walk off home run by Burke. I heard about it on the post-game radio show, and it certainly looks like the same guy on the highlights. Lucky bastard...
BX 0 Report post Posted October 10, 2005 That was a great game. I guess we've seen the last of Furcal in a Braves uniform, though. Oh well. We'll still capture the NL East next year. BWAAHAHAHHAHAHAH.
EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted October 10, 2005 That Farnsworth shored up the closer's role for Atlanta may have won them the division title in the first place. They only ended up two games ahead and a single additional loss to the Phillies would've meant a tie. Farnsworth is now eligible for free agency so it is unclear if he will return for Atlanta. Farnsworth has his warts, but a pitcher who strikes out a batter an inning clearly has something going for him.
