The OAO RAW thread - 10/10/05

Recommended Posts

Oh I'm sure Lawler will protest, leaving Coach alone and they'll have rotating heels taking over the spot until Foley comes around around 10:00 and announces he's taking Lawler's seat until King ends his protest which won't be until Eric announces Ross's replacement....

Chris Jericho.

Seriously, they couldn't get Goldberg.  Bring Jericho back and convince him "no, really it's once a week, you just talk."

They still use him for promotions, so what would be different here?

Well, he's in Europe or whatnot, with Fozzy. Unless he has a private jet, I don't see that happening for at least a month-ish.

then a Masters squash.

Funny considering Tajiri got most of the offense. It wasn't a squash in the truest sense.

And I remember Stephanie's voice beginning to go during her GM run.

I haven't noticed if this has been brought up or not, but has WWE kayfabed a reson for this Vince/Stephanie alliance? For the No Mercy 03 ppv (loser leaves WWE forever stipulation), there was this 45 minute-long interview with Steph for Smackdown where she hinted that Vince molested her as a child and she hated him beyond words. Also, last time she was an onscreen character, she was the face GM of Smackdown. Whats the deal here?

I don't mean to sound like a smartass or anything, but do you actually think they CARE about looking back at past angles for continuity? Basically, Steph is "Daddy's little girl" again.

I understand totally KingPK. I was just hoping that for once, WWE would explain a past angle being totally contradicted. Odds are that the writers they currently have, werent around in the Fall of 03, so they have no knowledge of the angle.

When Linda walked out at the end, I knew she was going to be the one who was going to fire Ross. Can the WWE be anymore predictable?????

I just thought of this: Jim Ross ----> GM?

I'm sure there's been at least one other post saying "JR FOR GM" or something like that.

JR's old-school, southern-brawling RAW takes on Teddy Long's new-school, gangsta-style warfare SD.

They didn't go into specifics, but I'm pretty sure Vince or Linda said something about how they've spent the past 2 years tryin to bring the family back together, or some shit. So I'm thinking that's about as much of an explanation as we're gonna get. They sorted their problems out and are now 1 big...heel family?

Didn't Vince say in an interview a while back that the "Mr. McMahon" character, along with the other McMahon characters, wouldn't be a prominent part of the WWE product anymore?

What a fucking liar.

I'm not going to totally trash this yet because I wonder if the McMahons were just on for the first couple of USA shows, first for the Austin nostalgia segment and last night for the Ross firing. Vince or whoever might be there next week to bring in a new announcer but where else do you go with it after that? Their issue is with Austin, who isn't around. Cena and the faces on the roster have zero to do with any of it. There's not much you can do with it.

I wasn't as baffled by the Vince/Steph alliance as I was Vince and Linda now making up and being thick as thieves again. And where the hell was Shane last night? He's the one McMahon I'd like to see.

Man do I miss Prison Break.

When Stephanie showed up in the first segment yestersay, I knew it would be McMahon-a-mania all over again. Who was the draw for the 5.0 segment last week ? Why the McMahons of course ! So let them be the main focus of the show. It reminds me of 2003 where Vince McMahon would be the main heel on Smackdown and had boring main-events feuds with Hogan, Tenacious Z, Steph and Taker. It didn't drew shit then and it won't draw anything now.

Screw the McMahons.

People actually thought Steph looked good?

Compared to how she has looked recently? Sure

Her breasts? No, it's becoming bad sag city. Get her in a dress shirt again.

Not to mention I'm sure she could be a linebacker for the Bears as wide as her shoulders are now.

I don't agree with a lot of what Todd Martin writes when he does the Raw recap for the Observer page, but his final thoughts on this week's show was nail on the head material...

This show was not without its strengths. The stuff with HHH in particular

was really strong. However, there is something really disconcerting about

them building so heavily around the McMahons, for no discernable reason

other than ego. A Linda McMahon heel turn accomplishes absolutely nothing.

She can’t act as a face or a heel, and heel authority figures have been

passe in wrestling for many years.

The McMahons were presented as the biggest stars on this show, and I can’t

come up with an explanation for why. They have an actual roster of wrestlers

that could benefit from that focus. They have really talented wrestlers like

Shelton Benjamin that could become stars if given time. They have main event

programs to sell, an extremely marketable champion in John Cena, and a

roster of potentially effective headlining heels including Triple H, Kurt

Angle and Edge. These are all productive directions.

The focus on the McMahons, on the other hand, leads absolutely nowhere. The

firing of Ross comes completely out of the blue to the vast majority of the

audience, and the McMahon segments aren’t accomplishing anything. Is

Stephanie going to wrestle Alexis Laree on a future PPV? Is Vince going to

do appearances on house shows? Is Linda going to wrestle Steve Austin? The

only argument for this nonsense in the past was that it built ratings. I

don’t buy that for the most part, except for the period in 1998-1999 when

Vince was really hot as a heel. But now that is completely out the window,

since WWE doesn’t make money off of selling ads anyway. Thus, focusing

heavily on characters that won’t wrestle on PPVs and won’t work house shows

is completely indefensible.

This practice isn’t even pointless. It’s counterproductive, because it takes

away from the wrestlers. I just can’t accept any other explanation for this

nonsense than the McMahons want to be in front of the camera, so they came

up with excuses to do so. Publicly owned companies shouldn’t sacrifice the

interests of their business for their own personal egos. There are enough

problems with the product that they should be spending their time worrying

about those rather than how they can book themselves as stars. A

professionally run company ought to reject this kind of overt nepotism and

latent narcissism.

The McMahons’ motivation in wanting to get rid of Jim Ross is completely

illogical both in terms of storyline and reality. The storyline is

nonsensical. If Vince was that angry at Austin, he could fire Austin. If he

was concerned about disrespect, he could fire Bischoff. If he was angry no

one saved him, he could fire the wrestlers who would be capable of doing so.

Instead, the reason for his actions seemed to be that “everyone” knew Ross

would be fired anyway, which is once again catering too much to the internet

rather than creating a cohesive and logical world in front of the camera.

The decision is even more illogical behind the scenes. Ross is the best

announcer they have. Mike Goldberg is a good announcer and with time he

potentially could have been a good acquisition, but even he shouldn’t have

been replacing Ross. The whole thing is even dumber if they plan on making

Coach the lead announcer. They apparently didn’t learn their lesson the

other disastrous times they attempted that. Coach is also a heel, which

makes every representative and authority figure on Raw a heel. Ross is a

figure that fans like and respect. Getting rid of him because of his looks

is inexplicable. Why not just make Stephanie McMahon the lead announcer

while you’re at it?

The word of the week is meritocracy. Look it up, WWE.

LMAO at this sudden widespread internet love for Jim Ross. For years people have been talking about how he's a shell of what he use to be. For years people on the internet have been mocking Jim Ross for the way he looks, how his voice sounds, his football obsession and the termonology he uses. Nothing but groaning and mockery over him mostly liking wrestlers that are hosses or have backgrounds in football or amateur wrestling. Every week when his Ross Reports would come out there would alway be these "transelations" of his comments as a way to take potshots at him and WWE. Just recently people got a big kick out of The Ultimate Warrior's recent commentary on him. Now all of a sudden everyone on the internet is rallying behind. Yep, anything to trash WWE, cause the smarks hate WWE and whack off to TNA and other companies.

Well, I for one, was actually surprised by Linda's heel turn. I seriously didn't see that one coming. Okay so now that JR is gone, where is Al Snow when you need him? I thought him and Coach were a great team!

Guest I miss Test.

I think it's more how WWE handled the firing of Ross. Most won't disagree that he's slipped during the years, and his orgasmic shilling at times is embarassing. But, they currently have nobody to replace him, and the team of Coach/Lawler is definitely worse, as was proven before. The storyline of firing him was rushed and made absolutely no sense, nevermind why it's McMahonamania again.

They explained that they spent the last two years in family therepy together.

For once they actually tried to explain their logic and no one noticed and continued to bitch about the lack of continunity.

Also, I doubt that this was just a two week thing. If you ask me, Steph made it perfectly clear that she is at least back on TV for the time being.

I thought that was perfectly clear when Linda said it last week before she got stunnered by Austin.

While I do argee with this, you have to say, firing JR based his looks is sad. I mean, during a broadcast, who looks at the announcers, much less cares how they look.

Oh and great stuff by that Observer guy.
