Sting vs Hogan

Recommended Posts

In retrospect, what are your opinions on the feud between Sting and Hogan from 96 to about 98? I was more of a WWF fan at this point and time, so I only saw bits and pieces of this prolonged feud. But I would like to list some memorable moments during this feud, so if you have any please list them...

Sting returning at Uncensored 97 and beating the crap out of the NWO was really cool.

Unfortunately, the most memorable thing abou the feud was how their Starrcade match was fucked up in every way possible. From Hogan controlling 95% of the offense, to the "fast" count, to the indecisive finish... Just awful.

I loved this feud. Waiting for the nWo-Sting segment at the end of the show was the main reason I watched Nitro. I wish I had some of that stuff on tape.

Uncensored 97 was my favorite part. I was disapointed though by the whole feud though because I kept thinking that it would end with Sting defeating Hogan and going back to the old Sting and lose the crow gimmick

This program was WCW's only major storyline that effectively was ONE VS ONE. They had the very successful WCW Vs NWO storyline that virtually died and never really meant anything in the long run.

WCW had Sting/Hogan, while WWE had Austin/Hart. It was a good time because both stories were great.

The blow-off completely ruined the entire storyline however, It's like a good movie that has a shitty ending, all you remember is the shitty ending.

It should have just been a 8-10 minute match with Sting dominating to start, Hogan running away as the coward...Sting drawing him back...Mass NWO interference for Sting to fight off alone and the clean finish.

It was right there, not a year later like some claim that just showed WCW was clueless.

It also doesn't help that Hogan never put Sting over properly in any of their bouts which is why I'm such a huge mark for the Fall Brawl '99 finish and seeing Sting crack the baseball bat over Hogan with everybody in the crowd going nuts for it! :D

The "Hollywood" Hulk Hogan/Sting feud is one of my favorite feuds ever. Infact, it could have been my absolute favorite feud ever if not for the awful, awful ending. The buildup was just perfect. The commercial for Starrcade 1997 with Sting in the ruins. The fact that Sting and Hogan didn't even touch each other until their match (well, excluding Uncensored 1997).

Some of my favorite moments from the feud:

-Sting coming down from the rafters and attacking the nWo at Uncensored 1997.

-That time Eric Bischoff did a promo in the ring, and Sting came out from underneath the ring to give Bischoff the Scorpion Deathdrop.

-Hogan and Eric Bischoff bringing out a fake Sting and having him beg them for forgiveness, but then the real Sting showed up and gave Bischoff and the fake Sting the Scorpion Deathdrop.

-Sting giving Bischoff the Scorpion Deathdrop, then stuffing a Hogan t-shirt in his mouth. Sting then smiled, which caused the fans to cheer even more, and the announcers made a big deal about him showing emotion for the first time in a long time.

-Sting holding the crow while that monologue narrated by that kid played at Clash Of The Champions in August 1997

-The week after the nWo attacked Sting (this was on the same show where Bret Hart debuted in WCW), a mannequin dressed like Sting repelled from the rafters, and the nWo ended Nitro beating the mannequin up.

-Then the next week, the mannequin Sting repelled from the rafters and fell through the ring. The nWo brought it to Hogan, who was going to "wipe the smile off of Sting's face." However, when Hogan removed the mask, it was revealed to be the real Sting disguised as a mannequin. Sting then demolished the nWo, while Hogan ran away again. I always loved that segment.

-The time a bunch of guys dressed like Sting ran into the ring and were beaten up by the nWo. Buff Bagwell punched one of the fake Stings, but the fake Sting no-sold the shot, and gave Buff the Scorpion Deathdrop. It turned out that the Sting who gave Buff the Scorpion Deathdrop was actually the real Sting. I always loved that segment too.

-At the end of nWo Monday Nitro, Hogan recieved a present that he thought was from Bret Hart. The present was a waxed Hogan head that freaked Hogan out. The camera then cut to the entrance where Sting was standing on top of the nWo Nitro logo. He then zip-lined towards the ring just as Nitro ended.

Just an awesome feud with a sucky ending.

This is the feud that really got me into wrestling.

I loved it. I can't believe I forgot some of those angles Ed described. They were fantastically done.

Aaaah, if only I still had all of my recording tapes with all of the stuff on it.

That'll teach me to not put labels on tapes.

Had the starrcade match been done right...or even the subsequent matches....this would be a killer dvd for WWE to release right now. Chronicle the entire feud...maybe throw in their babyface vs babyface match from a few years earlier..and even a few of their big wins before the feud as extras.
