TUF 3 starts sometime in the spring.

 

TUF 2 sucked because of the heavyweights.

TUF got better for the later-half of the season, but the first half was bad due to bad fights (all the heavyweight fights suck) and the constant injuries.

Can someone help me out with some old school vale tudo history? Like I'm talking pre-ufc stuff.

 

Also, does anyone know of the exact time between when UFC went from SEG to Zuffa and what the circumstances were during this time? What was the height of the fighters' paychecks after the initial tournaments where it was winner take all and before Zuffa took over? Was it comparable to current salaries?

You know watching that Beyond the Glory I realized that the first couple of UFCs might not be good to see real MMA but they're awesome to see brutality and someone just whipping someone else's ass with strikes....right?

You would be correct. I wouldn't say it became "real" MMA until around UFC 15 or so.

I've only watched the first two TUF DVD's and I saw Leben get eliminated and then brought back. That was fine except he didn't really get beat up when he was eliminated.

Has anybody whipped his ass really good yet? Like on the show or in the UFC?

Joe Doerkson gave him a proverbial pistol whipping in the grappling department, but to Leben's credit he hung tough and made it to the judges.

With Joe Doerksen's recent shortcomings and Leben's seemingly improved grappling ability, I would give the edge in a rematch to the Crippler.

I just watched the Ultimate Fighter finale......WOW. Forest and Stephan had a war. That was awesome. How'd you feel about them both being offered a contract?

And how have they done in the UFC so far?

And did that punk Diego ever get knocked out?

Both getting offered the contract was the perfect move by Zuffa. Both guys are so damn likable and a great representatives for the sport. They have each fought once since then in the UFC, Bonnar defeated Sam (from TUF) in the Summer by decision and Forrest beat Elvis Sinosic in the fall by KO. Both fights were very entertaining. Bonnar is fighting James Irvin in January on SPIKE TV, and Forrest has a date with Tito Ortiz sometime in 2006.

 

Diego looked great against Nick Diaz (a top 10 WW fighter in the UFC), so Diego has one or two more fights before getting into title contention. He's probably in the upper 10 in the welterweights of the UFC right now (Hughes, BJ, GSP, Trigg, Sherk, Karo, Diego is probably how it would go).

Forrest has two wins, whomever he beat by RNC (name escapes me), where he talked about how he wanted to bang but then did the opposite after the fight.

LOL, I forgot all about Bill Mahood. Fitting, given the length of the match and the only notable being Forrest spooning with him after the choke.

Tito has more experience than Forrest, is a better wrestler, has fought a higher standard of opponent. The problem is, perception-wise, Tito hasn't looked impressive in YEARS.

I expect Ortiz-Griffin to resemble Ortiz-Cote.

Cote is better on his feet than Forrest, while Forrest is much better than Cote on the ground. I think that combination will lead to Tito exploring his options more standing, though he'll still shoot in when given the chance. Once there, he better remember how to cage stack quickly, or else he's going to be fighting off Griffin's submission attempts for the duration of the match while it's on the ground.

How good is Tito on his feet?

And is Chuck the best on his feet in the UFC and if he isn't who is? Because it seems like you're getting hit with a diesel when Chuck punches you.

Chuck's got serious knockout power, as he practices hitting from all kinds of unorthodox positions (check out UFC 49 vs.Vernon White), and now that he's cleaned up his stand-up (he's not as open, he's more mobile changing directions and opening angles), he's as dangerous as they come.

 

But there also is Arlovski, who has amazing speed for a guy his size, and also hits like a truck. However, unlike Chuck, Andrei's chin has not been tested as of late (Rizzo knocked him out some time ago). Andrei has good accuracy with his punches.

 

Leben has iron hands and a chin to match.

 

Franklin has comparable speed to Andrei for his size. Great handspeed.

 

Outside of UFC, I'd say a lot of the thai clinch fighters (Wanderlei, Shogun), and one cannot forget Mirko Filopovic. Right leg, hospital. Left leg, cemetary.

I think Gomi's standup is pretty good, as well. I wasn't particularly impressed by it prior to this year, but he has improved greatly in it, beating two fighters whose "specialty" is standup, Pulver and Azeredo (even though he had almost twenty pounds on Jens)

Diego has a tough chin but I don't think he would've been able to take too many shots from Leben so I'd imagine he'd want it on the ground where Leben was thought to have zero skills until he pulled off a solid armbar tapout on Edwin Dewees at Ultimate Fight Night II. Still, in both his fights with Koscheck and Cote we've seen that Leben is a fan of hugging and the lay n' pray technique so I could easily see Diego fucking him up something fierce with some poundage. Diego was probably the best fighter on the show with maybe Leben taking second.

 

Seeing as how Leben is the subject at the moment I'd like to take this oppurtunity to point out how moronic the UFC is for not booking Swick vs Leben yet. I'm aware that Swick is supposed to be injured at this point but they've had a few PPVs and 2 Ultimate Fight Nights since the original TUF and the story between those two is one of the better unearthed rivalries going on.

Actually, I'd say Forrest was the best fighter going into the first TUF season. He'd already had success similar to that of Leben's, and was considered to be a very hot prospect before his semi retirement. There's a reason no one from Randy's team ever brought his name up as a possible opponent.

Has anyone read any MMA books, not instructionals but like actual non fictional stuff? How is BRawl, or that NHB Evolution one? I heard that's a good one, it was advertised on SD awhile back.

 

I still say Ortiz is gonna come back with a mean streak. If he shows the kind of aggression against Forrest as he did against all those scrubs, he will be back. His problem is he folds against guys that stack up well against him. If he learns to be just as intense against guys that are talented as those that aren't, he should be successful again.

Just watching Beyond the Glory for the second time. Safe to say that I'm almost hooked on UFC, saw 44 last night as well.

Forrest had retired shortly after suffering the broken arm against Paradeo, as he figured that at that point his career wasn't worth the injuries he was piling up.

So during TUF it wouldn't have been a contest if those guys tried to fight Chuck or Randy?

What about this point in all of their careers? Still no chance?

 

And Forrest retired befor TUF right?
