Xbox 360

Recommended Posts

I ended up getting the Arcade.

Still have to hook it up, but when I get it hooked up I'll play anyone in Madden.

If I can still use my old gamertag with the 3 month subscription I bought from a card, it's Run Emmitt Run. Yes I've had it for a while, it was around the time Emmitt broke the rushing record.

Red ring today. Happened briefly yesterday, but crossed my fingers and got another few rounds of Tiger out of it. Happened again today, tried it six times, and all RROD. I registered it online, and it said the warranty expired January 31 of this year. Wasn't the warranty just upped to 3 years, or was that only for new purchases? I got mine on December 23, 2005. I'm getting drunk right now, but that won't make my 360 work when I wake up. Suggestions?

Also, the place I'm currently renting has a built in corner shelf, on which my tv is kept. I keep the 360 on the floor below it, as open as possible. I'm buying a house in a few months, and looking at some entertainment centres. I've been told not to put the 360 inside a cabinet, as it leads to overheating. Ideally, I wouldn't be purchasing a cooling unit. So, my questions:

If I buy a centre, can I leave the 360 in it, even if there's a four or five inch gap between the shelves? Am I better off buying a wall-mount for the television and just building two shelves for the 360 and my cable box? And finally, and this might be a dumb question, but how safe is it to run the component/vga cables through the wall?

1. Call 1-800-4my-xbox, it's better you get over the phone help.

2. Yes Microsoft extended the warranty to 3 years, thats why I say call.

3. DON'T PUT YOUR XBOX 360 ON THE FLOOR! Espically if it's on carpet.

4. If your cabinet has a gap in the back piece that lets air in and out, then I would says it's alright to put it in there as long as you left the front door of the cabinet open while your 360 is on, but to be perfectly honest with you, I would risk it, the best thing to do it just place the 360 in a area that's wide open and gets a lot of air flow.

Th entertainment center I have is pretty much a shelf, the top is big enough to hold my tv, the 2nd shelf has no backing to it, so it's just a wide open space, so that's where my 360 and Wii sits, and the bottom shelf has a backing, so that's where I ended up putting my VCR along with my cable box. Beccause if I put my 360 and Wii down on the bottom shelf instead, chances are they'd overheat because there's no where for the hot air being blown out the back to escape to.

5. I'm pretty sure running your VGA cables through a wall is fine.

When it says expired, it means your standard one year warranty has expired - which would cover stuff like cables breaking, CD tray not working. The 3 year warranty for the 3red lights isn't shown on the warranty screen unless you submit it for a repair, a bit cheeky, but hey.

They did indeed extend it, and I'm covered; After nearly 30 minutes of being on hold and talking to Max, the automated voice guy, an agent told me it'd be covered; they're sending a box and it'll take about 3 weeks for repair. That's not terrible.

I would say this is the wisest step to take. My 360 is on an entertainment center with nothing on the sides but a lot of empty space and a few game cases, and I've had it since April without any issues. My power brick is right beside it on the shelf, too.

If I don't get a free month I will be pissed. Fuck that free arcade game shit. I still can't log completely on.

My roommate looked so broken and beaten yesterday as he tried to get a game of Call of Duty going for about an hour. Poor fella. I'm just glad I have Mass Effect to weather this dark period.

Just got this for Xmas with Bioshock and COD. I beat both and I need some reccomendations....just not a shooting game. I played the new NHL 08 and that was alright but I won't buy it.

And you can sometimes snag it with Forza Motorsport 2, so you're getting 2 games for less than the price of one.

Oblivion's a spectacular game.

Outside of that....um....look into backwards compatibles and sports games, because the console is majorly FPS heavy at the moment. I had a lot of fun with Fable. (Granted I bought it three years ago used in a "Send us your used games and we'll send you games for them!" trade and never got around to playing it until like, a month ago)

I have Ultimate Alliance that came with it, but I already beat it on PS2 and I'm assuming it's the same. I'll check out Oblivion though. When does GTA 4 and resident evil 5 come out?

Lucky you. Those are probably the 2 best single player FPS games I have ever played, and Call of Duty online is godly. Did you not get Forza and Marvel Ultimate Alliance with the system?

I very highly recommend Rock Band (although it is very expensive) and Guitar Hero III. Oblivion is amazing, and the new GOTY Edition includes the 2 main expansion packs. Saints Row is an excellent game that does Grand Theft Auto better than GTA does. Mass Effect, from the few hours I have played thus far, seems to be an excellent western style RPG in the vein of Star Wars: KOTOR. The Burnout games are excellent, as well.

Saints Row is backwards, though. You throw yourself in front of a car or ride shotgun with a soccer mom while she does drug deals to gain respect in your gang...and then you do a mission that has you wipe out about 30 rival gang members plus one of their gang's main leaders and you lose a bar of respect. If the point of the game was to let the rest of the gang fight for control while you bounce about doing nonsensical errands then it's great, but I don't think I should be losing respect for mowing down the competition while some other schmuck is getting mad propz for riding around in a minivan while some dumb blond goes "GEE WILLIKERS THIS IS DANGEROUS".

Granted, I probably wouldn't have touched half the side missions had they not been required, but it really felt like one of those forced prolonging things where they knew the storyline could carry 10 hours and needed another 20, so they decided to make me do nonsensical stuff to waste time. Worse yet, you only get a limited amount of respect from each one (one per level until you finish level 8) and then you have to do something else. The timing on this sucked because if you found one you liked, you didn't get to play it long enough before you earned all the respect you could earn. If you found one you hated, it would take you forever to get the respect out of it.

It's still a very good game, but God help you if you don't like the side missions.

I'm lucky then, because I liked the side missions...except the fake injury ones, those are lame. I do agree with you that it's stupid that you HAVE to do them to advance in the game, but really you don't have to do a whole lot of them or anything so it's not THAT big of a deal. I pretty much just did the Mayhem, Drug Deal and Escort missions.

Another plus is that when you fail a mission, you have the option to restart it, rather than end up at a hospital and have to work your way back over to the mission starting point.

No chance in hell. Why would Microsoft basically kill of their own HD peripheral and support the competition?

So if Blu-Ray ends up 'winning' the battle, the PS3 doesn't have the "We have Blu-Ray, 360 doesn't!" argument. They'll still have the "We come with it standard, with that you need to buy a peripheral", but I'd rather buy a peripheral drive than an entire new console.

Roomy says there's likely a 360 Blu-Ray add-on in the works...anyone heard about this? I suppose it's possible, but isn't it a little soon to have any info on such a thing?

I've heard the same thing.

I'll try to find some info on it.

Microsoft Corp's Xbox video gaming unit still fully backs Toshiba Corp's HD-DVD high-definition DVD format but could consider supporting Sony Corp's rival Blu-ray technology should consumers want it, an executive said on Tuesday.

"It should be consumer choice; and if that's the way they vote, that's something we'll have to consider," Albert Penello, group marketing manager for Xbox hardware said when asked whether Microsoft would support a Blu-ray DVD accessory in the event that HD-DVD failed.

Microsoft does not believe the surprise decision last week by Time Warner Inc unit Warner Bros, the top seller of home movies, to abandon HD-DVD format in favor of Blu-ray should affect sales of its Xbox 360 video game console, Penello said.

"I fundamentally don't think ... this has a significant impact on Xbox 360 versus (Sony's) PlayStation 3," Penello told Reuters in an interview at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

So the 2-3 weeks I was told my 360 was to be in repairs sounds like it could be much less than that. A buddy of mine sent his out the day before mine and got it back Friday, which means it only took about a week to repair and send back. That's not bad at all.

Earth Defense Force = big fun, even though it's a ridiculously cheaply-made and stupid game.

Earth Defense Force + playing split-screen co-op + one friend who is also a sci-fi/b-movie nut + playing the Misfits' Famous Monsters album through the harddrive = big, big, big fun.

Why Did GoldenEye XBLA Stall?

Like almost everything in this industry, it came down to money.

By Patrick Klepek, 01/11/2008

If you've read the latest issue of EGM, you've probably cried over the apparently silent death of an Xbox Live Arcade version of Rare and Nintendo's classic James Bond shooter for the Nintendo 64, GoldenEye 007. Quartermann's rumor mongering didn't elaborate much, but there's definitely more to the story.

The GoldenEye port has been in development at Rare for several months, and was never intended as a remake. The XBLA version would have featured the same graphics, maps and weapons from the N64 version, but with the crucial addition of online multiplayer over Xbox Live. Several characters wouldn't make the cut due to licensing issues with certain actors.

Unfortunately, the reason GoldenEye for XBLA died came down to money. Our source close to Rare said the conversion was a mere two months from completion, but Microsoft and Nintendo couldn't agree on the financial side of things. The point of contention, as our source puts it: would Nintendo receive a one-time fee for the rights to the game, or a continuing cut of the XBLA revenues? The latter seems to make sense for everyone, but apparently it wasn't that easy.

From what we're told, the best way to get this port back on track is to show Microsoft and Nintendo how badly you want it. If it all comes down to money, show 'em that you want to give yours. As soon as we hear anything more, we'll let you know.

So I pay $50 a year for the sole purpose of being able to play games online. I then have to view ads in most of the XBL fins to make XBL more money...and they have the nerve to decide that they don't want to give a cut of any of that profit in order to bring me a game they'd no doubt charge $10 for?

I really don't like XBL. I will retract this statement once we get an XBL MMO that doesn't have a separate monthly fee, or Metal Gear Online 2 as a part of the MGS4 port/multiplatform remake.
