2005-06 MLB Offseason Thread

Manatees are currently a minor league team in my area, the Brevard County Manatees. They're in the class A Florida State League, and they used to be in the Marlins organization (and their spring training site) until someone sold the stadium, and now it's the spring training home of the Nationals, though the Manatees are now in the Brewers organization.

Tell me that makes perfect sense to you.

fuck that. If they move there then they need to become "The Las Vegas Newtons" and sportscasters can call them "The Fighting Newts". A big smiling face of Wayne can be on the abdomen part of the jersey.

1. Vegas won't work because like with many "fast-growing areas," people are coming in with established favorites. Look at Tampa Bay. If you move to Vegas and have been a fan of the Cubs, Yankees, Cardinals, Red Sox, Braves, and so on, are you gonna let go of that for the gutted carcass of the Florida Marlins?

2. It's a convention town like New Orleans was. The Hornets, you may have noticed, were not a hot ticket. People fly into town from across the country, they're not going to go see a ballgame in the desert. Think of everything there is to do in Vegas. You can see baseball at home, and you'll care more about seeing your local Mariners than, say, Nationals-Blackjacks.

3. Another obstacle is the park. They're going to have to play in a climate-controlled dome, and then it's just D-Backs North. In the meantime, Cashman Field probably isn't an ideal destination in August. And the fans aren't the ones running and jumping around in polyester.

4. Gambling

Anyway, anywhere but Vegas.

The Portland Beavers have existed in some form since 1915. As long as the club has been in the PCL, it's the only nickname they've used. Las Vegas has had the 51s since 2000, and they were the Las Vegas Stars from 1983-99.

Thomas is sure to land a gig somewhere, as is Piazza. Sosa, I don't know. When he was traded a year ago, so-called experts predicted a return to the Sammy of past seasons. The Nats apparently had some interest in him, but considering how he hit in Baltimore, a hitter's park, it could be an absolute disaster in RFK.

We already have LA Kings, Sacramento Kings, and KC Royals.

Las Vegas Court Jesters it is!

I use The Court Jesters as the name of my fantasy basketball team..

I dont think the Os are going to trade Tejada, but I have got to believe that Javy Lopez will be traded for a pitcher soon.

He has no ties to the Red Sox organization. Get the hell out of this thread!

WEEI reported that he may or may not have been in a 3-way trade where Manny went to the Mets, Boston got Walker, and the Rockies got prospects, does that count?

Required Cubs Content Because A Red Sox Fan Is Calling Us Out On Mocking The Neverending Soap Opera Bullshit Of The Boston Red Sox:

Corey Patterson will probably not flourish in Baltimore as long as he's stubborn about re-evaluating his plate appearances. Jacque Jones was too expensive for his production. If Grissom starts over Murton in left, something's up. I'm starting to feel icky about the fact that like none of our position players have any significant tenure with the Cubs. Lee, Walker, Barrett came in 2004, Neifi at the tail end of 04, Ramirez in 03, Pierre and Jones in 06, Murton in 05. Kerry Wood has technically been with us since '98, but Insert Obligatory Kerry Wood DL Joke Here. I know, cheer for the uniform and all that, but you still like to see guys stick around for a while.

P.S.: What the hell do you mean, "instead of being a smartass." Don't you know which board this is

alkeiper can you do a keiper list or whatever its called for Larry Walker?

It's a Keltner list but, given how many times that Al has done one around these parts, I can see how one would get confused. :D

Red Sox sign Willie Harris.

This one's probably a better move for the Red Sox than it is for Willie Harris, who could have parlayed his potential deal with the Rockies into inflated offensive numbers and extended his career by a year or two. If Harris could figure out a way to hit the ball out of the infield and boost his OBP just a little bit, he could be a very productive utility guy for the SAWX.

Instead of being a smart-ass, post some things on the Cubs if you want to change the subject.

Seriously- it's not our fault that nobody else is doing anything. It's really not that funny anymore.

But the Red Sox aren't doing anything; most of the media rage is constant trade rumors, virtually none of which have came to pass. How many rumors have their been about the Red Sox and Manny, the Red Sox and Tejada, the Red Sox and Abreu, the Red Sox and x, where x = virtually every appealing free agent available? Epstein rejoining the team is the only real big news story to come out of there for a long while now, but you wouldn't know it from the deluge of content from sportswriters who are leaning on some imaginary Red Sox saga to fill out their columns during this slow period in baseball.

x doesn't even have to = appealing free agent, it can just be anyone. The Boston Red Sox have become New England's fantasy team. "Gimme him! I want him! Get him NOW. 3-way trade! 4-way trade!" So you get everyone making these ridiculous conjectures about totally implausible trade scenarios. I never ever ever thought I'd say it, but the Yankees aren't as obnoxious as the Red Sox now. At least they have a modicum of loyalty to a handful of guys. If Derek Jeter was a Red Sock, he'd be filling a blank in contrived trade rumors by now. There's no way they wouldn't be running him out of town. I think I even saw rumors that would send Trot and Wakefield out of town. Varitek is the only guy who is hands-off, and who knows how long it'll be before Boston sells him out too?

The thing is, you guys are posting rumors that really have no legs to begin with. You hear a fake ass 3 or 4 way trade, and post it here. Well, not saying you specifically, but Red Sox fans, you know who you are.

And that shit is getting annoying.

And honestly, why do Sox fans think Theo is some god like super genious GM? I can admit he's very good, but he's one Toby Clark bounce from not winning a WS for the Sox, and being a failure.

I think it's interesting that the mindset of the Boston fan switches so drastically between Patriots and Red Sox as it pertains to player acquisition. With the Pats it's like "oh we don't need your big names! it's better to win with our system! anyone can be a winner with the Pats!" and then football season winds down and it's "I want Tejada! I want Lee! I want Unit! I want Gagne! I want Blalock!"
