Bruiser Chong 0 Report post Posted January 17, 2006 I've only heard Advanced Pawns, but liked it enough to wanna check out the rest. I'm still not a fan of RZA lyrical skills, though. "Gravel Pit" was one of my favorite Wu songs, though. And is in fact my favorite Wu video. This is probably one of the more satisfying tracks in the Wu catalog, since it doesn't skew far from their approach on the mics, but offers a lot in the production category. A lot of people find most of the Wu's basic production boring.
Edwin MacPhisto 0 Report post Posted January 17, 2006 I love the basic, harsh RZA production style, but I also love "Gravel Pit." Which, as previously mentioned, also sports a great video. Their best work in the 00s, I think.
Bruiser Chong 0 Report post Posted January 18, 2006 I like it, too, but for those who place more emphasis on the production aspect of the genre, most of Wu-Tang's catalog isn't all that accesible. Not that I can imagine most of the Wu sounding right rapping over seven layers of beats, synths and sound effects.

Bruiser Chong 0 Report post Posted February 25, 2006 Apparently I'm the only one who accepts that Tush, Tush, Tush really happened. I didn't mean my post as a knock against Ghostface, since he's right there with GZA as my favorite Wu members. Nor was I suggesting he and D4L are on the same level. Just his track record isn't blemish-free.

Edwin MacPhisto 0 Report post Posted February 26, 2006 I think that is his point. And he's right, too. Going to see GZA tomorrow. My first rap show, somehow.
Bruiser Chong 0 Report post Posted February 26, 2006 I think that is his point. And he's right, too. Yup. D4L and related groups are garbage and won't be remembered in five years. But it's hard to listen to emcees talk like hip-hop purists when they themselves aren't completely clean in the "garbage" department. I saw the Ghostface concert clip and he could've very well have played Tush, Tush, Tush over the speakers after he did likewise with Laffy Taffy.
Henry Spencer 0 Report post Posted February 26, 2006 Fair enough. People who tend to not be fans of Ghostface's style dismiss everything he does as garbage, which is why I asked.
Bruiser Chong 0 Report post Posted February 26, 2006 No, no. I love Ghostface. Just not enough to not acknowledge the few kinks in his catalog.
AboveAverage484 0 Report post Posted February 27, 2006 Saw the GZA in Asheville last night, great show. His raps are so smooth, and he is no bullshit. The two opening acts both spouted off about Bush, but he remained mute on the subject. Somebody brought a RIP ODB t-shirt and threw it to the GZA on stage and then he let him hold his chain up with the GZA symbol on it. Some dumbass right in front of the stage grabbed it and got the symbol off, GZA was like "If you don't give me that back I'm gonna fuck you up," and I was like oh shit, two rows or so behind. Luckily he gave it back, only low point of the night, what a fucking dumbass. Edwin, if you're interested, he does pretty much one verse and a chorus from each of his songs. He opened with "Reunion," then worked his way through some selected cuts from his Wu-Tang stuff, solo stuff, the new album, and finished with "Triumph." Great show. Edwin MacPhisto 0 Report post Posted February 28, 2006 Yeah, I got back about 2 hours ago. It was fantastic. Same opening and closing as you said, lots of wonderful stuff throughout. This was in a club/bar that holds about 400 people, and the place was wall to wall. I don't think I've ever seen a crowd go more nuts than when he did "Clan in Da Front" and "I Gotcha Back." Muggs starting everything off with a set of Cypress Hill greatest hits was about the smartest thing ever for getting everyone hyped up. GZA was altogether liquid, hitting pretty much perfectly whether he was rapping on the beat or a capella. Also, Dreddy Kruger (one of my favorite-named Wu-disciples) kept going into the front rows to try to get joints from people. I need to go to more rap shows. The quality of the openers tonight was way higher than the usual equivalent at another show. Which makes sense, I suppose. Kase was really chill, Self Scientific was all right, and the Beetnix--Charlottesville locals--were exceptional. Great time. I also found out tonight that Ghostface is coming to the same place in April. The hits keep on comin'.
Bruiser Chong 0 Report post Posted March 1, 2006 Lucky. I've been wearing out The Pretty Toney Album since I posted about my disdain for Tush. Outside of that track, it's a beautifully-crafted album. Out of curiosity, I went and did a search and found out that Ghostface's gonna be in Detroit a week from tonight. Tickets are $17 at general admission. I'd go, but since 1) I'm not sure I wanna hit up a rap show in Detroit and 2) I don't know any Wu fans, doesn't look like it'll happen.
