2GOLD 0 Report post Posted April 19, 2006 Green goes on to mention three prime examples: a guy who wouldn’t stop talking about how much he loved to play the piano instead of play football, a guy who wouldn’t shut up about how much he loved zoos over football; and a guy who wouldn’t say anything, except about how much he hated football. All three were taken in the first round, and all three have been busts. I assume the piano guy is Joey Harrington. Who's the other two? Third one is Ricky Williams I'm sure, course how you can call Ricky Williams a bust is beyond me. The end of his career is a downnote but Ricky wasn't so much a bust as a guy who always had WAY too much pressure put on his shoulders alone. Jesus Christ couldn't have made Ditka's decision to trade all the draft picks seem like a good one. And Miami never got a quarterback worth a damn in the time he was giving everything he had for them.

the pinjockey 0 Report post Posted April 19, 2006 I like the move on the Niners end. This draft is deep enough and they have enough holes that there are going to be some players at 22 worth moving up for. I saw someone spitballing on another board about packaging the 6 and 22 together and seeing where that gets them, but I can't see a team in the Niners shape gutting a draft like that. They aren't just one player away. IMO, it is a good deal on the Broncos end, contingent on it setting up another deal. Either using the extra 2 or 3 to snag Javon Walker or using the picks to move up from 15 if they are targeting a player. Otherwise, I am not a fan of moving that far down for just a third rounder. the pinjockey 0 Report post Posted April 19, 2006 I don't know if Holmes or Jackson last that long though. I think they are setting up to take Davis at 6 and this lets them address the defense as well with someone who can step in right away.

SpikeFayeJettEdBebop 0 Report post Posted April 19, 2006 That ESPN article said two of the three players that didnt like football were offensive lineman. So either it was wrong, or it can't be Leaf and Williams.
Failed Bridge 0 Report post Posted April 19, 2006 I remember people here telling me I was on crack for thinking Vernon Davis would be a top ten pick. Not to mention the "You don't take a TE with a top ten pick!" people.
USC Wuz Robbed! 0 Report post Posted April 19, 2006 I still don't think he should be a top ten pick, but I accept that some NFL people are stupid enough to consider it.
Failed Bridge 0 Report post Posted April 19, 2006 Vernon Davis is a freak of nature type athlete. He could be to the TE position what Julius Peppers is to the DE position.
the pinjockey 0 Report post Posted April 19, 2006 Do you think that because you don't like him or do you not think that because he is a TE? If you just aren't as high on him, that's cool. But looking at what TEs are bringing to the game now, there is no reason to not draft one in the top 10 if that is what it takes to get an elite one. If you wouldn't use a top 10 pick to get someone that can bring the same offense firepower as Antonio Gates you're nuts.
USC Wuz Robbed! 0 Report post Posted April 19, 2006 How do you know his "freakish" ability translates well on the pro level? Antonio Gates wasn't even drafted, he walked onto the San Diego squad basically, and broke out from there. And yes, I'm not high on VERNON DAVIS himself. I'm not saying he won't break out and join Gates, Gonzalez, Shockey, etc in the elite, but right now, I don't buy him yet.
USC Wuz Robbed! 0 Report post Posted April 19, 2006 Besides, about the TE question: The first ten teams to pick are- Houston, New Orleans, Tennessee, New York, Green Bay, San Francisco, Oakland, Buffalo, Detroit and Arizona. How many of those teams have a SEVERE need for a TE that outweighs all their other needs? The only teams I see that really needs a TE is San Francisco and Arizona. And both of those teams have huge holes elsewhere that needs to be addressed. Let me put it this way, would you rather see your team take a TE in the first round, when you have holes all over the offense and defense, or would you want a different position filled first? the pinjockey 0 Report post Posted April 19, 2006 If the TE is the best option among the needs, sure.

jwpeer 0 Report post Posted April 19, 2006 Vernon Davis is also the best wide receiver in this draft. He's big, strong, FAST, has good hands and knows how to line up as an end OR split/wide out. His weakest abilityu is blocking, but he's very solid and has great drive in run blocking (His pass blocking is pretty questionable, but on 99% of teams he'd be your #1 or at worst #2 pass catching option, so I wouldn't really want him pass blocking on most downs) If he goes after some of these flawed wideouts like Chad Jackson and Santonio Holmes, I'll laugh. Just ridiculous.
USC Wuz Robbed! 0 Report post Posted April 19, 2006 If the TE is the best option among the needs, sure. That's the point. He wouldn't be. However, I will just let his coming season speak for itself. So that's the last I will say on this, since I won't change my mind until I actually see him play vs NFL teams, and I don't think any of you guys would either. Lt. Al Giardello 0 Report post Posted April 19, 2006 Vernon Davis is more then just a TE. He is a offensive weapon that will help an offense out. He is basically another Shannon Sharpe, Tony Gonzales, Antonio Gates, etc. He is the best TE prospect, I think of all time(Even better then Kellen Winslow II). He has the best catching ability then any WR in this years draft, combined with blazing speed and massive power.
Brett Favre 0 Report post Posted April 19, 2006 TE isn't really an important position. You can win without a big recieving TE. Look at the Super Bowl champs of the past few years. Its not something you should spend a top ten pick on.

Bottom line, TE isn't even close to being the most crucial position on an NFL team. So technically, you shouldn't spend a top ten pick on it.

Special K 0 Report post Posted April 20, 2006 I'm very excited for the Seahawks next season. I think they're just as good as last season. If Julian Peterson stays healthy, they have a FEARSOME D. Burleson should offset the loss of Hutchinson well, this season. I'm a bit worried about them in the long run, though. Signing Shaun and Burleson to such monstrous contracts is a mistake in the long run. Shaun just posted the best season by an RB ever, but he's getting old, and while he is surely talented, Hutchinson and W. Jones deserve a lot of the credit. Burleson, if healthy, is one of the better WR2's in the league, but we got by famously with Jurevicius, and it's hard to see Burleson staying healthy long. The 'if healthy' caveat is tough to take on a guy who plays so hard, and is famous for making yards after the catch. At least he's a Seattle Boy. I've got two friends who played against him in track. (their consensus: He's a fucking freak) I'll continue to root for the Bengals, hard. I hope Carson Palmer comes back kicking ass. I love the Bengals because A) they're perrenial losers B) they're pretty much the most exciting team in football. ONe thing I love about them is their D is so all or nothing. Throw it deep on the Bengals D. Either you're getting a TD or they're returning it 30 yards. And the 3rd team I love, which I might have to stifle my love for is the Cards. They look to have a crazy O this year. I love watching them, and I love Fitz and Boldin, but if they actually start winning, I may have to revise my opinion. I think the Vikes are going to suck, unless they get a new receiver posthaste, and that suits me just fine.
Guest El Satanico Report post Posted April 20, 2006 I think Burleson will be a good signing, but it's nuts to think he offsets the loss of Hutchinson. I'm sure you're more knowledgable about Seattle than I am, but you seem to underestimate the loss. IF the running game suffers without Hutchinson, A WR won't matter. As for Seattle's long term future...does it matter? The team has been built and it is an championship contender, so it's all about the present/near future. UZI Suicide 0 Report post Posted April 20, 2006 Yeah, I don't get that. How does an average WR offset the loss of the best interior lineman in the NFL, and one of the key pieces to Seattle's running game?

Lt. Al Giardello 0 Report post Posted April 20, 2006 I must have missed something... when did Vernon Davis become the consensus top TE in the draft over Marcedes Lewis? Since College Football season is over. Vernon Davis had an amazing season at Maryland where he was the main weapon in the offense, he set many school records both on and off the field(Weight lifting and shit like that). I know your a Bruins fan, but you must be smoking crack if you think Lewis >>> Davis. The scouting combine boosted Vernon into a top ten draft pick, just look at the numbers he posted. 40 yard dash - 4.38 225 bench press - 33 reps vertical jump - 42" He is a freak, who has the ability to outrun Linebackers, and out muscle DB's.
