SpikeTV Cancels TNA Monday Night Special In February

Recommended Posts

According to several sources, plans for a live TNA special on Spike TV for Monday 2/13 are off. Spike TV made the decision to not move forward about a week ago. I was told that TNA was willing and ready to produce the special as they saw what a major opportunity it would have been.

The proposed special, which would have been live the day after TNA's February PPV, would have fallen on the same evening WWE's Monday Night Raw will be preempted by the USA Network for the Westminster Dog Show. It now appears 2/13 will be the first Monday evening since August 1995 with no professional wrestling programming on cable television.

According to a source at Spike TV, the decision not to produce the special was due to "logistical reasons" and future TNA specials (live or taped) are still being discussed for the future.

Bullshit.

This is the dumbest move on Spike's part. They have a free night, with no competition and they blow it.

Go buy some more Bond movies you dumb fucks.

It's likely that no official word will be given, because it was never officially announced by TNA or SpikeTV. It was only known through the IWC thanks to Dave Scherer and Dave Meltzer.

Okay...so the Monday REPLAY of TNA's new episode of Impact does better than the FIRST-RUN AIRING, and it's REPLAY (as in: all results are on the net and can easily be found) is on at midnight, Raw is pre-empted by the fucking dog show, and SpikeTV...cancels the Monday night special? Okay...who the fuck is running this company? Maybe they're deciding this based on the ratings of the past few specials, but seriously: Monday night has been WRESTLING NIGHT since Raw began airing. Most fans from the Attitude era that I speak to who no longer watch still flip through the channels to see what's going on. If they were to air a 2-hour TNA special, chances are these fans would see it, and if they were impressed? You get more fans to watch the show, which means higher ratings, which means more money you can charge advertisers for commercial placements.

It doesn't seem to make a whole lot of sense to me either but maybe I'm biased because I'm a wrestling fan.

It makes perfect sense to cancel it. Spike TV fears Vince McMahon. They booted him off, sacrificed the ratings, and now TNA is starting to feel the wrath of WWE's arrogance. WWE already planned a house show in the same city as TNA's first house show on the same weekend. They are already fighting with UFC. WWE, for all of their BS grandstanding about how they "need" competiton, want these two promotions dead by the end of 2006. Of course, a network should have nothing to fear from a wrestling promotion, but Spike isn't exactly the place to go for good TV decision-making. Neither is Cartoon Network.

I do find the cancellation fascinating for this reason. If someone like Bischoff was in charge, the 2/13 show is a huge no-brainer. The Nitro runs, even when the show sucked, got big boosts when Raw was not on the air. This was exactly what Meltzer was talking about months earlier. Spike getting a 2.0 with the ad revenue is fine compared to a 4.0 with no ad revenue (WWE got that). A live show, after a PPV, like this show would have been, has a chance of getting that.

Bad move. Now regular Raw watchers won't get to see Samoa Joe vs. Buck Quartermain and Abyss vs. Lex Lovett.

PWInsider said that the Detroit 3/18 Saturday Night's Main Event (not a house show, as you said) was booked back in November, way before TNA scheduled their Detroit house show.

If there was any remaning doubt that Leena was Mike.....

Yeah, I really don't get this whatsoever. As a prvious poster said, Monday night from January-August is wrestling night. It wouldnt re-luanch a Monday night war, but it would expose TNA to a LOT of people.

It could just mean that they aren't doing a live show. Doesn't necessarily mean they won't be showing a TNA show that night. Seems stupid to not take this oppurtunity to run a live show, but I guess Spike could have a reason why they'd prefer it taped instead of live.

If that's true, they'd have to tape it earlier Monday since the PPV is Sunday night.

HAH.

I'd laugh, VERY LOUDLY, if TNA turned round and said that they're vision of a "high-impact", "Fast-paced" tv show doesn't include the Almighty Jarrett as Champ.

I suspect there's more to this than meets the eye, but, for now, this is good news for people who are sick of the WWE getitng trashed by these idiots (TNA and the internet in general)

Your Jarrett hate = TNA sucks in every way possible is old and beaten to a pulp. Either add some interesting discussion to the board or PLEASE stay out.

So what the fuck is exactly your point with "good news for people who are sick of WWE getting trashed by TNA and the internet in general" and just what the fuck does that have to do with ANYTHING we are discussing here? Its like you dont even try to add to the discussion and instead just piss on it. Its very sad.

I'm sick of the attitude that Spike showing Jarrett against the Dog Show will singlehandedly kill the WWE once and for all and let Jeff Jarrett reign supreme in the "Monday Night Wars".

Because, as I increasingly believe -Spike want BIG STARS!!!!! - Not Jarrett - and the fat idiot can't keep his mug off tv

Please.

Of course, there's no doubt Impact will be beating Raw in the ratings soon.

Sting signed a one-year contract. He's not going anywhere for awhile. At least, last I heard.

It's my understanding that UFC will be shown in the time slot as usual. Spike has more faith in UFC because it gets higher ratings. They are probably just sticking with what they think would do better. For wrestling fans that sucks, but I think they view UFC as the cake and TNA as the icing.

Spike cancelled the special because they didn't think TNA wasn't ready for a Monday night special. They had also wanted TNA to sign one more big name for the special, to appear on it with Sting, but TNA couldn't pull it off;.

TNA are also in early talks with two big names, neither of whom is Bret Hart, and one of whom is someone who, apparently, you wouldn't think would be interested.

That sounds like Goldberg to me. However, I don't think it is Goldberg.

Quite frankly this is good for TNA, they weren't ready at all for this. If they can't get over 1.0 yet, they aren't going to suddenly compete against WWE just because WWE is off-air that night.

They weren't gonna compete directly with the WWE. There isn't gonna be a RAW on that night. It wouldn't have hurt for TNA to have wrestling fans that night flip to their programming looking for some wrestling.
