Angle's Greatest Rivalries

Recommended Posts

Triple H and Kurt Angle had possibly the hottest feud of 2000, sending Angle into the Main Event much quicker than he probably would have been there otherwise.

Who cares if they had a great match or not? That rivalry made Angle's career. At this point, I have no problems with them putting that one #2.

Yeah guys put all your hate for HHH behind.

The fued over Steph was what made Kurt Angle into a believable main eventer, and was problay the hottest fued in 00. I know everyone was glued to the TV during this fued, too bad they didn't know how to end it.

Its not so much HHHate (I will admit, there is undoubtedly some there) Its that a) the matches blew and b) Its not like HHH's "making" of Angle into a main eventer stuck or anything. He wasn't permanently in that spot for another two years or so and c) The HHH feud fell apart at the end to such a degree that it ruined all the build beforehand.

Plus, HHH "won" the feud and Kurt failed in getting Steph. 2 months later HHH was in the biggest feud in the company against Austin and Angle was one of the weakest champions in company history. It may have been one of Angles most talked about feuds, but it didn't exactly do him any favours. HHH is right up there with Taker in "helping" Angles career.

I'd argue that Angle's Rumble 03 match with Benoit was what really made him a permanent star, as well as Benoit to some degree, in WWE land. His feud with HHH was his first brush with the ME scene, but it really didn't mean much in the long run. He lost the payoff match at Unforgiven cleanly, and the feud didn't tie into his WWF title run at all. Yes, he did win the belt a month later with interferrence, but he didn't do anything of importance with it. Once he lost it, he floundered in the midcard for nearly 2 years, seldom even getting a shot at a big title. Meanwhile, HHH after the feud proceeded to go over Benoit for no reason, then went back to being a main event mainstay until he tore his quad. Then he came back more dominant than ever, while Angle was dicking around with Kane and getting shaved bald by Edge.

The whole timeline of events following the first HHH/Angle feud doesn't lend much credibility to the idea of making Angle a star.

Angle has had fueds that are more memorable, lasted longer, made him legit etc ...... in cmparison to HHH. If we are to argue what the angle gave Angle a Main Evnet push, yah we pick this one. But its a way bigger topic, so HHH need to be middle of the pack.

Exactly.

This list is simply another example of politics.

I'm just glad Austin is #1 - that feud, while not the best wrestling based feud, was the most interesting and most entertaining.

And its not like the HHH feud where the wrestling was bad. Summerslam is still one of my favorite matches ever and my personal pick for match of the year in 01.

Too bad that was the only good match in the Austin/Angle feud, because their Unforgiven match turned into a boring brawl.

I hate to nitpick on this kind of thing, but the WWE was so wrong here that it wasn't even funny.

Stone Cold did manage to get a rematch with Angle a couple of weeks later on the Oct. 8 edition of RAW. Angle and Austin were going back and forth, and like most of their matches, the action spilled to the outside as the match wore on. Commissioner William Regal was also at ringside. Stone Cold tried to grab the WWE Championship, but Regal wouldn’t allow it. Then Regal shocked everyone and leveled Angle with the belt and joined forces with The Alliance. Stone Cold pinned Angle to win his sixth WWE Championship.

With that, the Kurt Angle vs. Stone Cold Steve Austin rivalry was pretty much dead. Angle ended up losing the last match in the rivalry, but it was a tainted victory for Stone Cold.

The rivalry was over? Umm, hello. Angle joined the Alliance to turn on Austin at Survivor Series and cost him the main event. Then a month later, they wrestled for the WWF Title at Vengeance. I guess the part of the feud where Angle turned heel and Austin turned face was so silly that they just want to pretend it never happened.

Yeah, but Karen Angle was awesome.
