OAO No Way Out Thread, Feb/19th/2006

It's one of those mark myths.

Could it be that the guy thinks network backlash from the angle forced Batista off the air, similar to what happened with Muhammad Hussan (even though it was just sexual harrassment and not rape)?

I'm trying to reconcile this theory with someone having an IQ of over 75. Otherwise that's got to be the dumbest thing I've ever read.

I just got finished watching the PPV:

-I really liked the cruiser match. There was a lot of hot action in it, and the finish continued the Helms story perfectly. I've been a sucker for that finish for a while now, like when Angle "somehow" pulled out the win in the HIAC at the December 10, 2000 Armageddon PPV.

-The JBL/Lashley match was way better than I thought it would be, and the fact that Finlay was a part of it, AND the fact that JBL actually picked up the win, made it all that much better to me. The actual action in the ring with just JBL and Lashley was pretty solid. I don't get the huge JBL hate at all - I thought he did a great job of covering up Lashley's faults, and made him look pretty good, even though he beat him.

-Seeing Batista was a nice surprise, and got me excited about the guy for the first time in a very long time. When he comes back, we could see some great things as long as Kurt Angle is still the champion.

-I even enjoyed the tag team match, and I've always been a Tatanka fan for some reason. I was totally expecting Animal, like most others, so to see a swerve there of some sort was refreshing. It took a while for the fans to really get behind Hardy and Tatanka, but by the end they got a nice pop. I don't understand why they are pushing Hardy with Tatanka though, but whatever.

-Benoit/Booker T was solid as usual, and the finish was one of my favorite things on the entire show. I expected Booker T to pick up the win here, so when Benoit finally got the Sharpshooter locked in, and then went straight from that to the Crossface, I marked out big time. That will be one of my favorite finishes of 2006 I'm sure.

-Ok, I hate the fact that Orton beat Rey. I hate the idea of having Orton in the main event of WM. I don't like the guy's work in the ring at all, and he's one of my least favorite wrestlers in the world right now. I also hate where they are going with this Rey/Eddie shit, and on and on. However, no matter how much I hate all of that, I must say I actually liked the finish. I would have rather that finish be on a Smackdown or something since I hate stuff like that on PPV, but I did like how it was done. When Orton fell on the ropes, I was really pissed because I thought it looked so fake, but when I saw him start to move and then dodge and roll Rey up, I thought it was really clever. That's the only positive I can say about this match though for the most part.

-The main event was fucking fantastic. I've never understood the Taker hate, and this match once again makes me question it. When Taker goes out there with the right guy, and when he really gives it his all, he can be a fantastic worker, and has been for years. Kurt Angle and Taker have a certain type of chemistry together that we rarely see, especially in this day and age. I'd love to see them continue this feud, and like RRR said, I'd love to see a best out of 3-falls match with the two. I wouldn't mind seeing another match like that where all three of the falls are set up differently - pin fall, submission, and then maybe no-DQ or something. This Angle/Taker match really is a MOTYC, without a doubt.

For the first time in a while, I've got to say that I fully enjoyed a WWE PPV, even though I hate the fact that Rey lost. I totally expect him to job to Orton though, so maybe that's why I didn't let that one thing ruin the entire show for me. I don't see why anyone would have actually thought that Rey would beat Orton, it was so obvious that Orton would pick up the win, somehow.

I don't know. I've heard worse than that one.

I hate any cruiserweight match where 80% of the moves done in it are punches and kicks. So I didn't like this one.

The Lashley/JBL match was so much better than it had any right to be. Nothing over ***, but it did a good job in getting Lashley over and including Finlay in it was a nice touch.

Benoit/Booker was pretty crappy. They were just trading moves for the whole match with little tying them in, and they didn't flow very well.

The tag match was crap and the crowd did not want Tatanka there.

Oh fucking hell.

I guess Booker T will now enter into a full blown feud with The Boogeyman, ugh. I'm tired of Booker/Benoit, but I really don't want to see this feud.

The possible Benoit/JBL feud should be solid, but it should have happened months ago like I thought it was going to to start with.

The one that I can think of right now is that Goldberg and Austin are brothers. I'm doing a fantasy baseball draft, so that's the only one that sticks out.

Star ratings for Angle/Taker?

I just watched it again and I'll be damned if this wasn't closing in on a ***** match. Nothing was really sloppy at all in the execution of the holds, etc. Solid top to bottom match pace that delivered. Tremendous near falls/submissions. Hot crowd, even more impressive since both were working as faces. Etc, etc, I could go on and on on how solid this was. Unfortunately, I can't see the proposed SNME rematch anywhere near this quality but you'd have to think they may try.

I'd go with a solid **** 1/2 on this one. The only things really dropping it off from being pretty damn flawless was the spot where Taker was going to launch Angle over the top from a boot to the ass, and it basically got botched. Also, Angle fucked up and put the intial anklelock on the wrong side when he did it coming off from the legdrop on the ring apron.

Other than that, hot damn that was one of the best WWE matches in year. Period.

I was actually worried Angle had fucked up his throat when he caught the top of the announcer's table on the edge, after Undertaker had tossed him into the steps.

Something else from last night that was kind of a big deal for me: It's 2006. Michael Cole has been the play-by-play guy for Smackdown week in and week out for six and a half years and has shown absolutely no improvement whatsoever. Before last night he was just annoying to me, but during all the garbage after the Rey match it fully hit me that I really hate that motherfucker. I honestly think that I, with no experience whatsoever, could do better than him. That's fuckin' sad. The man is so absolutely terrible that I'm compelled to think that everything since September of 1999 has been a huge dream because there's no way that this guy should still be employed, at least not in anything beyond being a backstage interviewer. Fuck Michael Cole. Fuck Michael Cole with a big rubber dick. Then break it off in his ass and beat him with the rest of it.

Seriously, all that had never come to me before last night.

Yeah that drop on the announcers front really looked legit bad. With that said, it was a great spot upon another spot and just made that match just that more unique. This was right after the announcers table spot with the Angle slam, in which Angle seemed to be really fucked up in the lower back also from it. Two really serious looking spots there - I bet Angle was sore as fuck last night and into today.

Totally agreed with Cole - he was extremely annoying last night, almost braggadocious for some reason in areas. He is clearly getting as many lines fed to him by Vince as Coach is. Since he's been doing Smackdown since 99, there really is no excuse for such ineptness. While I doubt it will happen, I would much rather see Styles-Tazz on Smackdown and Ross/Lawler just doing Raw again at this point.

What exactly happened to Psicosis on that double team move with Super Crazy? They landed the move, but he acted like he got all messed up for a while after it.

If you look closely at the finish of the match, Taker is saying something to Kurt while being pinned. It should be "we just blew the roof off this place"

I just started listening to the latest LAW, and they really bashed this PPV. They said the Orton/Rey match was the best one on the entire show, and that Taker/Angle was only passable because of Angle's work alone, and really tore down Taker.

I had to laugh a little bit.

Well, I downloaded that Angle/UT match, and it certainly lived up to the hype it's been getting. This match happened about 5 years later than it needed to, because it put Angle over HUGE. He dominated most of the match and got smart, clean win (kinda reminded me of the Bret/Austin SS 96 finish). Good story telling, psychology and move execution from both guys.

Gets a solid **** 1/4 from me. Best WWE match since Lesnar/Eddie. No Way Out gets lossed in the RR/WM shuffle, but it usually delivers with at least one stand-out match.

I'll pimp wicked-wrestling.com

That's where I got Angle/UT, and a variety of other matches from WWE, WCW, TNA, ROH, NOAH, etc.

/shill

And that's where I get my other matches. Both great sites

Good, it pisses me off when people forget that match, especially given Heenan's commentary.

(Piper has the ring bell)

"USE THE BELL! WAFFLE HIM WITH IT! You know what they say! 'What the hell, use the bell!'"

The LAW guys are morons on every single level. They have blinders the size of mack trucks limiting their perspective. In their world "Taker sucks, Angle rules" so if the two have a tremendous match, you can guess what they'd say. Of course, when Dave started praising the match Dan started to like it a bit more :)
