Hawk 34 Posted February 26, 2006 Report Posted February 26, 2006 Some one needs to explain this Tyler Perry stuff. Isn't this the second movie have good #1 opening? I never see commericals or anything for these things and yet, it has a market somewhere.

Zetterberg is God Posted February 26, 2006 Report Posted February 26, 2006 The market is black people. Seriously, if you market anything towards that demographic and feature a mostly black cast, they will go see it. You Got Served is a prime example. One of the worst films of all time yet it was marketed towards/heavily featured black people and was #1 its first week. I don't mean any racism but it happens more and more. Madea's Family Reunion got pretty poor reviews but still got the #1 spot due to who it was marketed to.
Guest Smues Posted February 27, 2006 Report Posted February 27, 2006 I don't think I ever saw a trailer for the first one, Diary of a Mad Black Woman, but I have seen the same stupid commercial for Family Reunion ten thousand times. I had doubt it would be #1 this weekend, despite looking awful. Pink Panther making any money makes me weep. Eight Below not taking a huge slide makes me happy somewhat, but sad because it means Paul Walker makes money and has a successful film. The dogs should get all the film revenue, that'd buy a lot of bones.
Vyce Posted February 27, 2006 Report Posted February 27, 2006 This is just more source material for my upcoming thesis, "Black people like really, really, REALLY shitty comedy films." It's perplexing, too, given how many fine black comedians there are.
2GOLD Posted February 27, 2006 Report Posted February 27, 2006 Diary of a mad black woman was funny so I'll give the new one a chance. Glad to see Doogal fall down and bomb out.
RedJed Posted February 27, 2006 Report Posted February 27, 2006 For what its worth they didnt even have Running Scared playing anywhere near me here (it is only on 1600 screens compared to the others) but if it was, I certainly would have checked that out over the weekend. Seems like good popcorn fare.
bob_barron Posted February 27, 2006 Report Posted February 27, 2006 Running Scared was pretty awesome. Just a non-stop thrill ride for two hours with tons of violence

Madea's Family Reunion got pretty poor reviews but still got the #1 spot due to who it was marketed to. Madea's wasn't even reviewed by most critics. Rotten Tomatoes has 2 reviews for it. Nonetheless, like with Diary of a Mad Black Woman, it doesn't matter what the reviews state because there are a lot of people who like Tyler Perry's work and will see the movies regardless. I went last night and I'll tell you that there wasn't one disappointed person in that theater after we left. Perry's movies aren't 100% realistic, but they are hilarious, dramatic, and touching all at the same time. Definitely a feel-good kinda movie, and I'm glad a movie like that takes the top spot every now and then.
LivingLegendGaryColeman Posted February 27, 2006 Report Posted February 27, 2006 Glad to see Doogal fall down and bomb out. Well Jon Stewart was in it and ripping on it the other night to Ebert before it was even released. At least with Death to Smoochy he didn't rip it until after it was out for a while (although I did enjoy Smoochy). He was ripping Doogal pretty bad, making fun of his character, pointing out it wasn't released to reviewers, among other things.
razazteca Posted February 27, 2006 Report Posted February 27, 2006 Maybe Doogal should of waited until the summer to release the movie. I saw Pink Panther this weekend and to me it looked like Naked Gun in France with dated jokes that was suppose to be funny in the early 1980's.

I've never even HEARD OF half of them!
Hawk 34 Posted February 27, 2006 Report Posted February 27, 2006 It's Hollywood's "here's the shit we had left over" month.
CBright7831 Posted February 27, 2006 Report Posted February 27, 2006 The only movie that I saw this year in theaters (so far) is Glory Road, and it was a date movie.
spman Posted February 27, 2006 Report Posted February 27, 2006 Yeah, the theater I manage is pretty urban in the first place, so we had 2 screens of this Madea crap running, and if you didn't know any better, you would have thought the Universe was collapsing in on itself in those Auditoriums based on how dark it was, which is unusual since we usual draw more hispanics to our theater then anything. Ph well, at least we have Ultra Violet to look forward to next weekend.
Hawk 34 Posted February 27, 2006 Report Posted February 27, 2006 All I bothered to see this year at the movies were Hostel, Family Stone and Brokeback Mountain, all for date purposes. I just have no urge to drop $20 on any of those 12 movies listed above.
cabbageboy Posted February 27, 2006 Report Posted February 27, 2006 Hostel...there's a great date movie! Hey, honey...let's go see some guys get tortured for 9 reels. That said, I do want to see that when it comes out on DVD. I too don't really get this Tyler Perry thing, or maybe I kinda do but not 100%. I rented the first one and found some things in it decent enough, but the tone of it was the most haphazard since Fast Times at Ridgemont High. It's like one minute you have Perry doing his silly man in drag act, then soon after drifts into subplots about drug abuse. Just wondering but is he even trying to convince in drag?

The way I see it is that Tyler Perry is the new Bill Cosby. He is making family friendly entertainment that promotes a positive image of the black family unit with some morals.
Vyce Posted February 28, 2006 Report Posted February 28, 2006 If Hostel got her hot and bothered for you, please pass along her number to me.
Guest NaturalBornThriller4:20 Posted February 28, 2006 Report Posted February 28, 2006 For what it's worth... Running Scared was a damn good movie. And yes, i'd pay to see it again... Something like an amateur Quentin Tarantino movie.
The Niggardly King Posted February 28, 2006 Report Posted February 28, 2006 Tyler Perry... I like him. So far it seems his movies go all over the place, but he can be pretty good sometimes. I know a lot of people expected to hate Diary of a Mad Black Woman, but they were surprised that it was actually a decent movie. razazteca is right about him. Dude might just end being this generations Cosby.
Edwin MacPhisto Posted March 1, 2006 Report Posted March 1, 2006 Perry has a massive following built-in not only from the first movie, but from his plays and their respective DVDs, which are insanely successful. The niche market is Christian blacks who want to laugh but also want to see stories about religion and family. It's a huge goddamn market, and he is the only person currently playing to it on a national level. New Line signed something like a 7-picture deal with him, with the intent of releasing one of his movies every February.
Cheech Tremendous Posted March 1, 2006 Report Posted March 1, 2006 I guess I can understand the appeal of Perry and why his movies are successful, but I want to know how anyone even knows these movies are coming out? Where are they advertised? I watch a fair amount of television, read magazines, listen to the radio and have literally never seen anything for either this movie of the one released previously.
Edwin MacPhisto Posted March 1, 2006 Report Posted March 1, 2006 Urban markets, black markets, churches, BET, the internet. He's a big enough name that his built-in audience is actively looking for his stuff, and there are plenty of opportunities in his own internal marketing, within his plays and DVDs, to advertise the movies.
