Anyone else get a Sonic 3 vibe from certain parts of this game? I'm thinking parts of World 4 in specific, I'm sure I've seen more but it's getting late.

 

Specifically how?

 

The sprinting animation and giant springy mushrooms are all that come to mind.

Well, there's that, plus the background in World 4 kind of reminds me a bit of the first stage of Angel Island Zone in Sonic 3 (before it gets all burned up). There's also these things somewhere in there that 'spin' you from one side of a wall onto another that reminded me of something similar from Sonic 3.

 

 

Is there a place in the castle in World 5 where you can get a small mushroom? I lucked into one randomly once, but couldn't beat the boss in order to get to World 7.

Ah, those things in the ghost house. Gotcha. I'd say its more coincidence than anything else. The SNES' first gen SMW didn't really stress the system in order to display as much info as a late-gen Genesis title like Sonic 3 did.

 

The wall kick sorta-kind-of was in a Sonic game. Knuckles' Chaotix on 32x had a Sonic lookalike (Mighty, an armadillo) who used it.

 

The control is so awesome--the way even a subtle change in speed gives you a bit more of a boost, higher jump, etc is great. Plus, when you really pick up speed and end up doing the flipping jump (woohoo!)--love it.

 

Mini Mario may be weak, but when you've gotten used to him, he's so damn fun to control. Gets insane air from a running jump, can walk on water, and can surprisingly punch out koopas on the other sides of the metal fences. :)

 

Do the later worlds (5-8?) make better use of Mini Mario/Giant Mario? So far I haven't seen them get much use out of a handful of levels (and of course the previously mentioned unlocking).

 

It would be a bit of a disappointment if they didn't, considering how well the size-changed levels/enemies turned out on Super Mario 64 and SMB3.

 

Don't know much about 5-8, since I've been racking up coins I missed on the previous worlds lately.

Don't know if this is something that was in the remake of Super Mario 64 for the DS, but when you close the lid and put your DS into sleep mode while playing NSMB, Mario says "Bye bye!" and "It's a' me, Mario!" when you open it back up. Pretty cool little easter egg.

So I'm thinking about buying a DS because of this game.

 

Is it worth it?

 

Depends how big of a Mario fan you are. People bought SNESes for SMW. People bought NESes for SMB1 and 3. People bought N64s for Super Mario 64.

 

NSMB isn't the platform-defining title those were, but it isn't intended to be. It's just a damn good game, one a few notches below those Mario titles, but IMO better than Super Mario Land 2 and the original Wario Land.

 

The DS is definitely a worthy investment though, because you have your weird gimmicky games, but you also have a system that is a haven to classic 2D gameplay simultaneously.

 

By itself, I'd say it isn't worth it. However, look at what DS has out right now, NSMB, and those titles being shown/promoted at e3...

 

DS Lite....June 11th-ish...go ahead, make the jump. :)

 

I think this title may even be edging ahead of Dawn of Sorrow, the game I bought my DS for.

I haven't played a lot yet, but I enjoyed the classic bridge battle with Bowser in world 1 (that death animation seemed a bit violent for a Mario game but cool all the same).

Good game, but way too short. Unlocked everything in less than three days. Definately missed the flying, but otherwise, it's not bad. Thumbs up.

Well I think people may have oversold it now so don't get too excited.

 

As per the classic scenario, Bowser falls into the lava underneath a bridge. However, instead of just staying under there and not appearing again (maybe his kind are cool with lava and it just stings a bit...), Bowser's head pops back out and his skin melts off to reveal his skeletal remains.

I've been killing myself waiting for the Lite to come out. Today was my first day off in weeks, and I spent it looking for a demo station with NSMB to no avail. My life is a WAR.

 

Oh, Frogg Neal, there are plenty of games that make the DS worth buying. Maybe once I actually sit donw and play one, I can make some reccommendations, but in preparationg for my Lite, I already own Yoshi Touch and Go*, Kirby Canvas Curse*, Metroid Pinball (for the free Rumble Pak)*, Tony Hawk's American Sk8land*, Super Mario 64 DS**, Electroplankton**, and True Swing Golf***. Castlevania is also really good, just going by the demo I played.

 

*Working at a Sam Goody before it closed, I sat these aside and bought them at 90% off.

 

**Bought these for $15 at a store that sells unclaimed and lost baggage. Electroplankton is a weird import, so we'll see how that goes.

 

***Bought a mislabled copy at Best Buy for $10.

Hey, when you beat Mario, play around w/ the touch screen as the credits roll. Tap the screen, and the letters "ripple". Additionally, if you touch non-letters, you get the "jump" sound. Touch letters, and you get unique sounds from the game (i.e. each letter has its own sound).

No problemo. Remember, though, if you're in a spot where you just have to put a game away and can't save on the spot--just close the DS.

 

It goes into sleep mode, and when you reopen it, you're right where you left off. :)

BTW, the best way to get to World 7, is to save a mini-mushroom in the item tray. Then, save the game before you enter Castle 5. When you get to the Boss, ground-pound squash him once as Super or Fiery Mario. Then, use the mini-mushroom, and ground-pound the Boss one more time. That's it, you win.

I got one of these for my birthday, along with the Mario game, and this case.

 

The case is cool, and comes with everything in the picture except the system. It got retractable headphones, a car adapter, Screen covers, 4 cases that hold 4 games each, a place for the electric cord, and the inside of the lid has velcro straps and a place to put books and shit.

 

I haven't had this much fun with a game system since either the N64 or the Sega Saturn.

 

First time I turned into a giant I was like, holy fucking shit! I thought that was just for the commercial.

 

King Koopa's death scene is fucking ill.

There are a few item toad houses that give you only a mini-mushroom. If you've used those, then you need to find a randomizer item house, and then save the game. Keep going to the house until you get the mini-mushroom. Save again. Then go to the Castle, and do as previously described.
