ESPN sucks, so do thread closers

Recommended Posts

Damnit. Now the one guaranteed lock for picking football games is gone.

Whenever Salisbury got heavily behind any team, you knew they were going to lose.

Now where will I find my answers?!

ESPN fired Sean Salisbury. Or maybe he quit. Either way, he gone.

From the Star Tribune:

Former Viking leaves ESPN

February 26th, 2008 – 4:51 PM by Judd Zulgad

On the same day former Vikings receiver Cris Carter joined ESPN, the network plans to announce ex-Vikings quarterback Sean Salisbury will be departing after a 12-year stay as an NFL analyst. Word is Salisbury’s contract was up and ESPN decided not to renew.

Here are the statements from both sides:

Sean Salisbury: “I want to thank ESPN for 12 great years of talking football on TV and the radio. I have grown as much as I can at ESPN and decided to expand my horizons. I have created a brand and it’s time to expand into other opportunities in TV, radio, Internet, publishing, movies and public speaking, among others. My resume speaks for itself as a football analyst, and I believe I can talk all sports with the best of them.”

ESPN’s statement: “Sean Salisbury has made many contributions to our efforts for the past 12 years. We thank him and wish him all the best.”

OMG TNA EXODUS!

During the Tenn/Vandy game I just noticed the sports ticker go the category "CLEMENS" about Roger Clemens. Because putting that under MLB just wouldn't work?

There is something decidedly unAmerican about a hockey highlight being ESPN's all-time greatest highlight. The fact that it comes down to Boise State's game-winning play vs. the "Miracle on Ice" suggests to me that it's people my age voting either for something that they actually saw or something that they saw in a movie.

When I read that, I instantly heard Tony Reali's voice, so this is what hell is like.

You're supposed to think of Hawk Harrelson. THAT is hell.

On Screamin' A's radio show, I guess someone called him out for giving black athletes the benefit of the doubt, but not white athletes. Of course he denied it and said he's about right and wrong, not black and white.

He then went on to say that he would be on the air the next day for two hours because of black history month, or something like that.

The two really have nothing to do with each other, but I just thought it was funny how he said one right after the other.

Jay Mariotti called MMA being picked up by CBS the downfall of deceny in society, a moral outrage and said why not just put grand theft auto on TV on Saturday nights?

Overreact much?

Did you miss ESPN throughout December and January when the Patriots had their own PATRIOTS label on the ticker?

Why have I still not seen Dana Jacobson's meltdown?

I am disappointed in today's high tech society.

ESPN are keeping it under wraps big time but I bet it eventually gets leaked in a couple of years like those Berman videos

Last night while I was at a bar the TV directly in front of me had ESPN news on. The entire time I was there in the far right of their score ticker it had the score of the Trailblazers/Lakers game. Because truely I MUST KNOW AT ALL TIMES the score of that game.

That was their breaking news of the evening. It was a slow breaking news day, but not slow enough for them to abandon it and put the time on there like they occasionally do.

I never realized how expensive ESPN Insider really is. Is it even worth it paying for that price?

Eh - I pay for it every year. I think I get my money's worth but I'm not sure. I read so much stuff on there that I sorta lose track of what's Insider and what's not. I mean, during baseball season I read Buster Olney's links every morning and there are always some good Gammons, Neyer articles... as well as in-depth season profile and such. You also get ESPN the magazine but most weeks it goes right in the trash.

"Favre-Center?"

And why do they keep showing his retirement as "breaking news" on the ticker?

The thing that pisses me off about Insider is that there are articles that are free to read, that I want to read, and when I go back a day later, they're restricted to Insider.

"Favre-Center?"

And why do they keep showing his retirement as "breaking news" on the ticker?

Because it's the biggest sports story of 2008.

Dude, even I wouldn't go that far. But definitely the biggest sports story of the day, so that's fine. Whatever. They made a big deal about it when Marino and Elway retired too, same with Aikman and Young, and they'll do the same thing when Manning and Brady retire as well.

The thing that is odd about the Boise play being so far in that tourney is that the Statue of Liberty play isn't even the interesting play from that game. It was an amusing little play on a 2 point conversion. The real mindblowing play was the hook and ladder that tied it.

The hockey goal being #1? Um..why? It's more of a moment that was great than any sort of great play. It's a typical hockey goal, with the dude knocking the puck past the goalie.

The Statue of Liberty play won the game. You can argue that the Boise St. highlight didn't deserve to make it that far, but if you're going to include a highlight from that game, that's the one.

They replayed that nauseating Favre-trospective thing that his wife narrated from the MNF game against Denver a few months ago. Other than that, I've had no problems with the Favre retirement coverage on ESPN.

I guess my point is that a story that broke early in the morning shouldn't still be labeled as breaking news at 6 in the evening. A minor gripe I suppose.

Going on to something else, how the hell does some random soccer highlight end up being #1 on Top Plays so often? (and I'm not even a soccer hater, I played the damn game for about 8 years as a youth)
