Anderson's next movie is a remake of Death Race 2000 with Jason Statham and Tyreese Gibson. Of course, The Asylum had to do a mockbuster of it-only for some reason, they had to have it star Raven (yes, that Raven) and The Insane Clown Posse. (Warning, this may be NSFW)

I don't have a real high opinion on Anderson, and don't see how this could be anything but a letdown compared to the original. I mean, the original Death Race 2000 was so twisted brilliant, and so amoral in its violence, I don't think you could get away with stuff like that today. Like, the one chick who was the virgin sacrifice, rolling all the old people in wheelchairs out for Euthenasia Day, a certain political assassination... no way any Hollywood studio would do shit that ballsy in an action flick today. I have zero confidence in the director who made Aliens vs Predator to do anything even half that evil. I have this sinking feeling that it'll probably end up more like Twisted Metal: The Motion Picture with the drivers all killing each other more than killing innocent passengers.

Really? Holy shit, I'm gonna watch the hell out of that. Looks better than Big Money Hustlas, at least. And I've always thought that Raven could actually be an interesting actor.

A good star doesn't automatically equal a good movie. I loved Crank and the Guy Ritchie flicks too, but Statham's been in plenty of crap. With Death Race, do keep in mind that this is being made by the same director who did Mortal Kombat, Soldier, and Alien vs Predator and wrote all three of the Resident Evil trilogy. This is a guy who has his PHD in making bullshit.

 

EDIT: and doing a little research, yes, they changed the plot so that it's no longer "a bunch of celebrities run over innocent pedestrians while the world cheers along", it's now "a bunch of convicts are forced into a race where they kill each other". Bravo Hollywood, way to take the one original and unique part from the original movie and puss out on it. Just in case you came out of The Condemned thinking "ya know, this movie would've been perfect if they'd just had some car chases and ripped off Mad Max a lot", this appears to be the film for you.

Yeah, but that's a really old story that's been done a thousand times anyway. I absolutely do not mind car chases and ripping off Mad Max either... remember, I loved Doomsday.

Statham is the one guy who was actually pretty good in an Uwe Boll movie. Speaking of Statham, I need to see The Bank Job when it comes out on DVD later this month.

 

Hancock's various strengths and weaknesses have been discussed elsewhere (namely the first half is really fun, 2nd goes off the rails), but allow me to bring up something I haven't seen mentioned. Is it just me or is Hancock a ripoff of the Valiant comics character Armstrong? For instance:

 

--Both guys are known primarily by their phony last name.

--Both guys have been around for thousands of years, in fact there's a reference Theron makes in Hancock to them being around in ancient Sumerian times, and I believe that's where Armstrong was from as well.

--Both guys are drunken sots that aren't exactly role model superheroes.

 

This isn't to say Hancock and Armstrong are the exact same character, but you can't make me believe the writers here never read any Archer and Armstrong or Eternal Warrior comics.

Right here, one of the best homage movies ever made. Hilarious film, bought it a long time ago and still have it on VHS. Need to invest in a new DVD copy of it though as a safety net.

Then I remembered Anderson, and how his 2 best movies were based off of a fighting game (Mortal Kombat) and just ripped off a ton of sci-fi flicks (Event Horizon), even if the end results were pretty damn good. The man takes concepts and adds so much shit that he ruins them.

I think I've watched Hot Rod (or at least parts of it) about 4 times since it started airing on TV last month, and that's with seeing it in theatres last summer. Underrated comedy gem! Chris Parnell's AM radio character is great. "Do you like stunts? How about terminally ill stepfathers?"

I was going to say, "Well Notorious already out on Criterion and so anyone who wants to own it would really be better served just buying that" but then I actually went and looked it up and it's out of print. Further investigation revealed that all DVD versions of it are out of print. WTF.

Really. Old people are just as bad as teenagers with chatting during movies. People probably don't notice them as much since they don't attend movies as frequently as annoying high schoolers do. But as someone who attends "arthouse" movies on a semi-regular basis, I certainly notice.

That's the thing- this arts theatre is ALL old people. And you feel bad telling them to shush because they're old and don't get it.

 

It's always the fact that they can't hear the dialogue either, and need it repeated it back to them.

 

I almost wanted to go back and see Notorious again, since I'm neurotic like that, but I'm sure there'd be another batch of old people.

 

Once I managed to at least semi block them out, the movie totally kicked some ass. Loved the ending.

Hopefully this doesn't give new life to the catfight that was "what is torture porn?" but I watched The Machine Girl over the weekend ... and, damn, Jingus if that movie was too close to "torture porn" for you, you really & truly have to avoid the Hostel movies and the like with all of your might.

 

The Machine Girl was closer to a Troma movie than anything that I'd consider disturbing in the vein of Hostel. It was a live action manga; hell, I'd say that Sin City is a reasonable comparison for it.

 

My overall take: It was quite obviously played for laughs, and not in the good way, IMHO. It seemed to convey the "we're in on the joke" mentality that really detracts from a movie in my mind. Ichi the Killer or Battle Royale, for example, were not supposed to be taken seriously but were still portrayed as serious movies. The Machine Girl was way too "wink, wink" for my liking. The acting was decent (I was surprised to find out that the girl that played Ami hadn't acted before) and the plot was servicable. All in all, though, I think that it was just Ok - good but certainly not great.

It's time for a King Kamala Classic Direct To DVD movie review.

 

 

So I just saw The Independent, a movie that NetFlix recommended to me. The film, a ultra low budget mockumentary about a Roger Corman-esque B movie producer, Morty Fineman (played by Jerry Stiller),was made in 2000 but apparently wasn't released on DVD until a couple of months ago. This probably would have worked a lot better as a short film because even at 80 minutes, it feels really stretched out. The film also would have been much better off if they focused on the mockumentary aspect rather than the hackneyed plot about Fineman and his semi-estranged daughter (Janeane Garafalo). Still, the film isn't completely without merit. The clips we see from Fineman's past movies are mostly amusing as are the interviews with Fineman's contemporaries. Despite what looks like an incredibly low budget, this film has a decent cast and features a plethora of odd cameos. Peter Bogdanovich, Ron Howard, Roger Corman, Fred Williamson, Julie Strain, Karen Black John Lydon, Jonathan Katz, Brian Posehn, Andy Dick, Bob Odenkirk, and Ben Stiller all show up for this one. On The Kamala scale, I'd give this one **1/2. Worth a cheap rental if you're a fan of exploitation movies and odd cameos.
