AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted June 13, 2006 I liked the Ghost in the Shell movies, but actually enjoy the SAC show a lot more. Stuff actually happens without the need to make the dialogue so thick, to make the animation impress the hell out of you by having long sequences of visual metaphors, and no need to watch lots of scenery with no characters in them while the soundtrack tries to put you to sleep with chanting and drums. Whatever happened to the guy responsible for Riding Bean/Gunsmith Cats? His stuff kicked ass.
ragingfear79 0 Report post Posted June 13, 2006 I agree I love GITS but SAC is so much more enterntaining.
AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted June 14, 2006 I always see it referred to as "2nd Gig." Is that something explained in the series (perhaps an ep I missed), or is it just the 2nd season?
Golgo 13 0 Report post Posted June 14, 2006 Yes, 2nd GIG is just the second season, though on occasion some refer to the first season as 1st GIG since it shares its name with the series as a whole. And I can't remember if it was mentioned here or not, but there's also the S.A.C Solid State Society movie coming up soon. I can't wait. Finally watched all of Escaflowne. It's very good, Special K was right, Dilandau is awesome, etc. The animation even stands up well today. Everything is tight and consistent overall with something significant happening in every episode, helping to drive the plot and all working towards a culmination. I approve. devo 0 Report post Posted June 15, 2006 It took me a long time, but I'm finally all the way caught up with the One Piece manga. It's hard for me to say whether or not it's become my favorite (Eyeshield21 and Yakitate!! Japan are still battling for that spot as well), but it's without question an amazing manga which hasn't lost a single step even after four hundred and fourteen chapters. The current arc is probably my favorite storyline in any manga, ever. And sorry, ragingfear, but I haven't heard anything new about when Naruto fillers will come to an end. Special K 0 Report post Posted June 15, 2006 Finally watched all of Escaflowne. It's very good, Special K was right, Dilandau is awesome, etc. Told you! The art is definitely distinctive (they have noses!) and the animation is generally of quite high quality. It won't beat out Samurai Champloo, but I don't think it'll ever look particularly dated. And that soundtrack... Yoko Anno is a fucking genius. I do have to say tho that GitS: SAC bores me to death. I much prefer the movies. Then again I like pretty much all of Oshii's movies (Patlabor 1&2, Urusei Yatsura: Beautiful Dreamer, both GitS's) and hate most animes that try to mimic his style. I'm speaking specifically about Jin-Ro, which I thought was pretty terrible. Also: Have you ever wanted to cry like a little bitch? Watch Grave of the Fireflies. Jesus fucking Christ that is the saddest movie in the world. No other movie has made me cry, but just thinking about this one makes me want to. Christ it's sad. And very good. AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted June 15, 2006 Never saw Patlabor 1, but I found Patlabor 2 irredeemably boring. Good art/animation, though.
Ced 0 Report post Posted June 15, 2006 Regarding Kenichi Sonoda, he basically did nothing of note until coming back and churning out some more Gunsmith Cats in 2004. It looks like we'll be seeing those volumes in English some time next year via Dark Horse along with unflopped versions of the original GSC volumes.
Golgo 13 0 Report post Posted June 15, 2006 Saw Grave of the Fireflies. I'm not trying to sound macho here, but I didn't cry, though it's indeed very sad and it deserves all the praise it gets. And sorry, ragingfear, but I haven't heard anything new about when Naruto fillers will come to an end. sad.gif Same. All I know is that the episode titles have been updated through early July, but nothing beyond that. On the plus side, the pre-skip 3rd movie is set to premiere in early August, so hopefully the fillers end by or around then. Hopefully.
Special K 0 Report post Posted June 15, 2006 Never saw Patlabor 1, but I found Patlabor 2 irredeemably boring. Good art/animation, though. Patlabor 1 is better, but I still greatly enjoy Patlabor II. Haven't seen the third one (non-Oshii) but I hear it's quite good. Maybe knowing the characters of Patlabor makes it better. They really explore different characters in the movie, it's the focal point.
ragingfear79 0 Report post Posted June 15, 2006 I hope so, damn fillers. I didnt cry on Grave either but i agree of it being a really really sad movie. I just saw Howls Moving Castle and i have to admit i was quite dissapointed.
Sideburnious 0 Report post Posted June 15, 2006 Random question here. Is the Macross Plus movie just a "remake" of the 4 part series or is it a new entity. Just seeing if its worth my time watching it or not.
Special K 0 Report post Posted June 15, 2006 Oh, it's definitely a remake. It has like 20 minutes of new footage. The big difference is I find the movie to be much, much, more sympathetic to Guld. Huh, I didn't know Macross Plus was done by the guy who did Bebop and Champloo. I need to finish Samurai Champloo.

Guest wildpegasus Report post Posted June 16, 2006 oh yeah i saw it like two days ago, kick ass ep. Did you see it yet WP? I just saw it. Unbelievably awesome as those may have been the best episodes yet. Thanks to this show I now believe a Final Fantasy movie can be done. It's one of those shows where you got different situations going on at the same time and I find when you go one from one to another you get completely engrossed in one situation and than forget about the other. Than it's vice versa. That's the sign of a great show. I cried like a baby. In fact, I've never cried this hard watching a TV show, video game or movie before. Or reading a book for that matter. You know, one can try to be emotionless and not shed a tear or laugh a laugh but screw that crap unless you're in front of people you don't want to be crying in front of. Letting your emotions go and thinking about things can get you more into stuff as it did for me here. I love Ohrime's charactor. Absolutely love it. She's managed to stay innocent and true to her beliefs the whole way through the show. During the first bunch of episodes she was upset at herself for "being worthless" and "not being a help" to the effort of saving Kuchuki. Here in this episode her morals, friendship and beliefs are put to the test. All while under extreme pressure from others and even Kuchuki herself to go against what she believes in. Couple this in with Ohrime's determination to finally prove herself by saving her friend which is something she wanted to do for quite awhile and I just couldn't help but feel for her. And I love redheads too so Ohrime is my favourite. They should go to 1hr shows from now on. 30 minutes a week is just not enough. At least we had an hour this week. AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted June 17, 2006 I've yet to see the conclusion to Champloo. AS started dicking with the schedule again right when they were getting near the end, and when I missed the premiere of the last ep, the expected Saturday replay was an ep at an early part of the series. Argh! While it's easy to gripe about InuYasha, AS usually has some decent anime series (GitS:SAC, Paranoia Agent, Bebop, SC and FMA makes up for just about any complaints I could have towards them overall). However, it would be nice now and then to play some older stuff that isn't so readily available now and then. Do we need another repeat of the entire FLCL series? The bount saga can still go on for quite awhile.

I cant wait till we get back to the regular arc. Do you mean to say that the stuff you guys are gushing about is filler? Yeah, I think it's filler. It is an offshoot of the main storyline they had going on there with a bunch of totally new villans. I suppose they could connect this with the main story somehow if they wanted to go that route. But I think the "vampire"/bount bit they got going on now is more enjoyable than the first part of the series. Perhaps some of that is due to the now established INSANE amount of charactors that they have on this show. And they're still adding charactors to it. Not just charactors we see for a second and than they vanish again but charactors that are all given backgrounds/motivations/personality and all that kind of stuff. There are probably over 50 of these charactors. No joke. We're getting attached to them as a viewer.

Special K 0 Report post Posted June 17, 2006 Bleach manga/anime is very good. It ain't shit compared to any of the animes I've recommended. Champloo Bebop Escaflowne Saber Marionette J Slayers Next The Irresponsible Captain Tylor Gundam Gunda, Zeta Ranma 1/2 first two seasons These are all better than Bleach. Which I like. Just saying. Guest wildpegasus Report post Posted June 17, 2006 Bleach manga/anime is very good. Champloo -- just saw one episode Bebop -- Saw a few episodes; like Bleach way better Escawflowne -- Don't know yet Saber Marionette J -- Might've seen part of this; can't really comment on it Slayers Next -- Not sure what Slayers this is but from what I've seen of Slayers I don't like (more like dislike fairly strongly) despite trying to like it The Irresponsible Captain Tylor -- Haven't seen yet Gundam - Just seen Gundam Wing -- Liked it a lot but not as much as Bleach. I know most of the other series are supposed to be better Ranma 1/2 -- From what I've seen of Ranma it's the type of humour and show I don't like Astroboy -- I like better Dragonball -- Some parts I like better and some I don't. Bleach might take Dragonball over though nothing will ever top all the surreal moments in Dragonball. Dragonball Z -- Close Tiger Mask Tv Series -- I like this better. How could I not? Some of the best fights ever, some of the coolest charactors ever and they have Inoki and Baba in the same show. Plus they were ahead of their time and they talk about the NWA in it. You just can't beat that. Evangelion -- I only ever watched 1/2 of it so I don't know. I could potentially like this better. Junble Book Anime Tv show -- Very good but I still like Bleach better Speed Racer -- Pretty fun but I don't like it more than Bleach St. Seiya -- If I watched it all I could see it potentially beating Bleach Hellsing -- Bleach annihilates this Flame of Recca -- Man, I've watched too many series partway through!! This was looking good Berserk -- Again, I've only seen part of the series but from the viewings I've seen it wasn't looking as good as Bleach Sailor Moon series -- Don't know. Personally, I think I like Bleach better overall but Sailor Moon did have fantastic climaxes to their series that most TV series can't even touch. It's a tough call. Plus they have tons of panty shots which is something Bleach is in desperate need of. We need more fanservice!!
