Everyone who's been following the NBA has known this for a couple weeks, but for those who haven't, it's Steve Nash for the second year in a row. I gave COTY its own thread, and I figure this deserves its own, too.

Dirk deserved to be ahead of LeBron, Chauncey Billups didn't deserve to be ahead of Duncan. He's the 4th best player on his team, and I believe they'd be fine without him.

The one player I had in my top 10 that is absent from this list is Pau Gasol. Him and Garnett were the only guys with at least 20 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists per game, and with no other star players around him, landed a top 5 spot in the West. As an *all-around* player, I don't think anyone improved his game more than he did, aside from Diaw. I think he's in the Billups/Wade/Brand territory.

And Gilbert Arenas. I completely forgot about him. I kind of feel bad about it, too, as I've become a huge fan of his this year, and was really pulling for them to beat the Cavs.

I think the 2 guys who voted Duncan # 2 ahead of some combination of Nash, LeBron, Dirk and Kobe shouldn't be allowed to vote on MVPs ever again.

 

Arenas truly is the least respected elite player in the NBA.

The most interesting thing about the results is Kobe Bryant's line. It seems that voters either had him first, or near the bottom. Whereas Nash was a top-3 guy for almost everyone, Bryant polarized the voters. I would wager that his attitude and behavior over the years cost him a lot of votes.

I wouldn't have any issues if the MVP was Bryant, James, or Dirk either.

1. Why didn't Arenas get any votes? That's a crime. No excuse for that.

 

2. Why did Billups have more first place votes than Dirk? The more I watch him, the more I think he should have been the MVP.

I'm just not happy with Nash winning the MVP award again. Looking at the numbers and the Suns record though, I can't really argue it. It just, I don't know, it just doesn't feel right, ya know? He's now a back-to-back MVP, so he's in the same category with Jordan, Bird, Magic, etc. and that doesn't sit well with me.

 

Especially since a case can easily, EASILY be made for LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Dirk Nowitszki, Elton Brand and Chauncey Billups. If I were voting, I'd have had Nash either third or fourth, behind Lebron & Kobe and possibly behind Brand.

I think that Billups got the old "vote for the best player on the best team vote." Chauncey is great and all, but I don't him see him as an MVP at all.

 

Dirk gets hurt by the fact that the Mavs are always good and he's always the centerpiece of their success. It's the same reason coaches for teams that are always good get little support in coach of the year voting. We take Dirk and the Mavs for granted because they always win 50-60 games.

 

Nash is easy to vote for because we can point to something tangible and call it value. He joined the worst team in the league and they became a legit title contender. They turn over 3/5 of their starting five and they don't miss a beat. It's easier to see value there than being a superstar on a middling team (Bryant). Or at least that's my interpretation.

I've always liked the Pistons, enough to call them my "Eastern favorite" before they beat the Lakers. I don't buy the Billups talk one bit.

Rasheed, Hamilton, Ben, then Billups. Billups and Ben are probably interchangable. Ben is the most important to his team, I'll say that much. Without him, they don't have the guy in the middle to play the defense first mentality. If he leaves in the offseason, their success in the playoffs may as well.

 

The Pistons and Mavs are quite possibly the only teams that I can stand left in the playoffs, and the Nets depending on how I feel toward Vince Carter at the time.

The guys who vote on these awards are morons. Duncan got 2nd place votes in a year with at LEAST 5 legit MVP candidates, and a year that he was probably not good enough to make the All-NBA 3rd team statistically. The Defensive POY voting is pretty retarded too in that FOURTEEN of the 124 guys didn't think Ben Wallace was at least one of the 3 best defenders in the league, while AK47 finished 3rd while appearing on only 51 of 124 ballots. Seriously, what the fuck qualifies these people as voters if they know nothing about the game? I wonder if Chris Paul will end up not on the ROY ballot of some of these douchebags too.

To be honest thats why Gilbert Arenas shouldn't have gotten any votes. His team was barely .500 for christ sake. If Iverson or Gilbert got Votes, Paul Pierce shoulda been on some ballots.

Playoff Kobe would be the MVP for me honestly. I think the playoffs showed what the Lakers could really be like with Kobe being that ultimate basketball player that he has it in him to be. If that was how he played the whole year, I would say hand it to him. But scoring a bunch of points on a medocrie team shouldn't get you the MVP.

 

The Billups hate is astounding. All I am going to say is that the Pistons wouldn't have ONE championship and would be a fringe playoff team without Billups. That dude gets no love.

Uh, how should he have been ahead of Nash? It's not a best player award. It's a most valuable to a team award. Nash made his team look amazing during the season, Kobe made himself look amazing. I don't see how this is even up for debate.
