Indeed. You just wonder how much longer this can go on without it being addressed. Every team slumps throughout the season, but this current one is primarily due to issues that are bigger than just a bump in the road.

Is it time for the annual "Fire Dusty" campaign? If all the DL guys come back I think the Cubs'll be fine. I don't think they'll finish in the top 3 in the division, but I think they'll be fine. But seriously, what does Dusty Baker see in Neifi Perez and Jerry Hairston Jr.? Those guys are not starters. Hell, they're barely defensive replacements. The Cubs seem to be in this weird phase between rebuilding and trying to contend, like they call up these kids from the minors and don't even let em play hardly. Wuzzupwitdat?

Dusty isn't fond of the kids. That's the main problem. The kids get called up, but really don't get a chance to show what they can do. That isn't to say Dusty's depriving us of the next superstar everytime a kid comes up and sits, but even when a youngster proves himself to be a commodity, Dusty will find a way to work in a vet over him. Just look at the leftfield disaster from last season.

Even now, Matt Murton's showing to be the Cubs' best pure hitter. Where's he batting? Sixth or seventh. He seems like a perfect fit for the two-spot, since he typically works the count and gets on base. Ronnie's okay, but his OBP is close to his batting average. Were it not for his hot start, we'd have (again) two poor candidates for the one-two spots of the batting order. But they're fast and the misconception is if they're fast, they should be at the top of the order.

I guess to Dusty's credit, Neifi is really a bench guy this year, as opposed to last season, when he was finding his way into the lineup even when unnecessary. It's Hendry's fixation on him that's confusing. He is the one who signed him to a multi-year deal, while shopping Walker, after all.

For now, those two are in there at second because of Lee's injury. I'm surprised we haven't seen more Mabry at first and Walker at second, but that's the way it's played out.

Hey now...I never said fourth place. But at least they'll always be ahead of the Pirates...

Did anyone see that catch a Japanese player (didn't catch his name) made that robbed a HR? He climbed on top of the wall, leaned over and caught it. Amazing play.

Scott Kazmir's quietly 5-2. 7 innings today, 3 hits, 1 walk, 9 K's. The walking is what he needs to get under control.

There was a popular opinion among statheads that Joe Blanton's strong rookie year was a fluke. Well he's doing a great job of proving them right. Six runs given up in the 1st to the Jays tonight and his ERA is now just a hair under 7.

Nine game win streaks fall hard I guess. Nice to see Carlos Ruiz get some playing time. Chris Booker was claimed off waivers by the Kansas City Royals.

ESPN.com's poll asks if you would like to see Bonds sign with your favorite team as a DH. Hell no, because what the hell would we do with a DH?

I'd like the Yanks to get Bonds, because then A-Rod wouldn't be most hated.

You guys are still going to win the game if it keeps going like this.

Yankees are treating Schilling like their personal bitch tonight. Giambi, Arod and Jorge have all hit homeruns off of him.

I'm happy Glavine got # 280 with relative ease tonight. If only we hadn't wasted that opportunity last night. Well, hopefully Trachsel gets us a victory tomorrow since the two games after that will likely be losses/bullpen killers.

The rumor right now is Jeff Conine for Will Ohman. Ohman's been crap, so it wouldn't be terrible, but I don't think Conine's going to really do much for the Cubs' offense.

Speaking of their offense, they actually score in the first inning for the first time in what seems like ages. Cedeno's leading off tonight and singled and stole a base. Pierre bunted him over to third, which I thought was a bit silly, since a single would probably score him anyway. Oh well, play for one run and that's what you get.

Nomar is tearing the cover off the ball right now.

Brett Tomko's not this good. No way. He's going to hit a wall soon.

I like Andre Ethier.
