TWiB #7: 5/15 - 5/21

Well, the 'Stros are down 8-0 in the third, but Bonds hasn't homered yet, and he probably won't off of my second favorite Astros pitcher Taylor Buchholz...mainly because he's probably gonna get pulled soon....giving up 8 earned runs in 2 1/3 isn't gonna cut it.

I should feel pretty good that the Reds are facing Pittsburgh for a three game series right now, especially with Harrang starting. The funny thing is the starting pitching durring the sweep loss to Philly was pretty good, with an exceptional 8 innings by Claussen yesterday (minus the HR he's beating himself up over), our hitters just couldn't make anything happen. And we don't have the relievers to hold a 1-2 run lead right now.

Here's hoping the bats come alive and the Pirates continue their *ahem* outstanding season so far.

This is the second time in a week that the Umpires have screwed the Yankees by forcing them to play in a fucking monsoon.

Well, I just saw on the bottom line that Cabrera is on the DL, so I did a little looking, and it looks like the competence of the Os organization is in question again. Do they bring up Hayden Penn or Adam Loewen to take his spot in the rotation? No. They brought up Chris Britton to the bullpen. The concensus is that they will skip cabreras next scheduled start since it was an off day thursday and bring up Penn to start the 23rd vs Seattle which was a scheduled date to start in the minors for him anyway.

Penn's walked 10 in 23 innings at Ottawa. Loewen's walked more than three batters per nine as well, and he's in Bowie. Britton's been downright dominant in Bowie, posting stats similar to Chris Ray's. I don't see a big problem with this move.

Just so no one has to stay up late watching Sportscenter tonite, Bonds did not go deep. He went 1-3 with a double and a BB. He also looked terrible striking out against Trever Miller. He's not gonna be in the lineup tomorrow nite, so you can all go to the movies or something.

Brad Ausmus is at second base. That's how you know the team's gettin' their asses kicked.

Braves go down 5-0 after 3 but come back and end up winning 11-8. Huzzah. On the downside Kyle Davies went out in the 3rd with an injury.

Well, it's a good thing that George Stienbrenner was patient enough to let his farm system grow and develop instead of trading away everybody for overpriced superstars.

So, really...who are the Yanks gonna trade for? I've heard Abreu and Torii Hunter and some others, but I don't see any of them actually going through. The best I think they can do is go ahead and trade some pitching prospects to the Nats and get back Soriano.

The best I think they can do is go ahead and trade some pitching prospects. . .

I don't know that they have pitching prospectS, and they're reluctant to give up Wang or Cano so the Yankees could be in some serious trouble. At this point they'll have to either deplete the farm system entirely AND give up a piece like Chacon or Small just to get an adequate player, or give up a starting pitcher or everyday player just to get one back.

Well, they have Colter Bean...I doubt he's enough to get Soriano. Ya know Steinbrenner's gonna break the bank or the farm system for somebody.

To get Soriano, the Yankees will most likely need to have a third team get involved to send either prospects or a decent starter to Washington and the Yankees can give up someone like Chacon and a prospect or two.

I doubt that will happen, but that seems like the only way they can do it. I doubt anyone takes someone like Sheffield unless the Yankees eat a LOT of the contract.

Speaking of prospects, Craig Hansen went four scoreless innings giving up 5 hits while striking out 4 and walking none in Pawtucket tonight. There's rumblings that the Sox are considering grooming him to be a starter instead of a closer. I'm seriously giddy at the thought of seeing guys like Jon Lester, Abe Alvarez (though most are saying he's not quite MLB ready) and Hansen coming up for spot starts later this year.

Like I said before, the Bobby Abreu rumors are 100% baseless and it is probably the same for Torii Hunter. There's just no way a contending team trades a major player in May unless there's a situation where he *HAS* to go. The only player the Yankees have to trade is Philip Hughes, and that would be a mistake.

Giambi's injury shouldn't be serious. What the Yankees need to do is get Andy Phillips into the lineup at first and DH Giambi. Put Bernie Williams in left. There's no reason for both Melky Cabrera and Bubba Crosby to be in the lineup. If they need a trade, look for guys like Jeff Conine.

redsox.com mentions that his back was somewhat tweaked in the sixth, which might have been the reason he left the game the next inning.

courtesy boston.com (globe site)

Josh Beckett said today that he does not have a blister on the middle finger of his pitching hand. The finger appeared to be an issue after last night's game when Beckett went to the dugout after the seventh inning looking at the finger with pitching coach Al Nipper and trainer Mike Reinold standing around him. Terry Francona, after the game, was twice asked about the finger and did not directly answer the questions, instead saying the only concern was whether Beckett's back was OK after he'd slipped in the sixth inning.

Beckett, however, was not asked about the finger after the game. This was for two reasons: a) Francona's response to the questions and b) the fact that no one in the press box had seen the dugout exchange. It wasn't until about midnight or so, well after clubhouse availability had ended, that a photo was posted online of Beckett, Nipper, and Reinold looking at the finger.

"Tell them you looked at my hand," Beckett said, standing alone in a hallway a little while ago at Camden Yards. "There's no blister. I look at it all the time. Every inning I'll be in there messing with it, just to see what the callous is doing."

Wow, the Yankees' lineup looks absolutely pitiful considering what they had Opening Day.

Do they really have no one else that their DH tonight is batting .135?

Call up Eric Duncan. Last I heard, he was doing great in the minors. Phillips is good defensively, but Giambi sucks when he's a DH, so I don't know if its the best decision to DH him. They need to look into finding pitching, and maybe they can move Cano to the outfield for a short time period, and have Cairo start at 2nd. Or just have Cairo play the outfield.

Andy Phillips is never going to be a MLB player. Ever. He's been given chances over the last two years and still can't hit anything but a fastball, and he has no plate disipline.

Chacon and his slanted cap are getting ROCKED. 6-0 Top 2.

Small comes in and gives up a 3 run shot to Blalock. 9-0. 8 ER in 1.1 IP will destroy your ERA.

Melky Cabrera plays the deepest LF I've ever seen at Yankee Stadium.
