godthedog Posted October 22, 2007 Report Posted October 22, 2007 "Tears of a Clown" is an interesting choice. I like that song, but it seems a little too whimsical to me. My favorite Miracles song would actually be "Tracks of My Tears" probably, which is pretty much a song about exactly the same thing. i'm disgustingly lukewarm toward "tracks of my tears," though i know everyone else on the planet loves it. there's just something really stirring and yearning about "tears of a clown" that still seems joyful at the same time. can't really put my finger on it. "who's loving you" is also excellent. far better than the jackson 5 version; doesn't have that orgy of syrupy strings, and michael didn't really have the mature chops to sing it well.
Nighthawk Posted October 22, 2007 Report Posted October 22, 2007 They played both songs on the muzak where I used to work. Still preferable to the time I worked in a grocery store, where every ten minutes you'd hear "Hi, this is Smokey Robinson. Try my Down Home Pot Roast frozen entree, available in the frozen food aisle." Other selections on the muzak loop included "Every Breath You Take", "Pictures of You", "Wicked Game". Fairly depressing selections.
King Kamala Posted October 22, 2007 Report Posted October 22, 2007 Alright here's the best estimate for my current favorites. It's a somewhat lame bunch. 10. "Don't Answer Me"- Alan Parsons Project 9. "Kate"- Ben Folds Five 8. "All The Way Up To Heaven"-Guster 7. "It Gets Me Going"-Spymob 6. "P.Y.T."-Michael Jackson (You could really insert any of the big singles off Thriller here. P.Y.T. is on here mostly because it isn't as overplayed as the others) 5. "I Love You"- The Zombies 4. "Changing of The Guards"- Bob Dylan 3. "Isis"- Bob Dylan 2. "Walk On By"-Issac Hayes 1. "Another Day"- Paul McCartney
Beast Posted October 22, 2007 Report Posted October 22, 2007 Current favorites as well, no order - This Time Tomorrow - Kinks Take Five - Dave Brubek Quartet Can't Stand Losing You - Police Importance Of Being Idle - Oasis Love Minus Zero/No Limit - Bob Dylan Milk & Honey - Million Billion Bottle Up And Explode - Elliot Smith Gotta Get A Hold Of Myself - Zombies Surf's Up - Beach Boys Energy - Apples In Stereo
Edwin MacPhisto Posted October 22, 2007 Report Posted October 22, 2007 Metallica - Seek and Destroy System of a Down - Chop Suey Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven Rage Against the Machine - Renegades of Funk Creed - My Own Prison Asia - Heat of the Moment Johnny Cash - Hurt Soul Asylum - Runaway Train The Eagles - Hotel California The Wallflowers - Heroes
Copper Feel Posted October 22, 2007 Report Posted October 22, 2007 Stairway to Heaven and Hurt don't belong on that list, they're tarnishing its otherwise agreeable nature.
King Kamala Posted October 22, 2007 Report Posted October 22, 2007 And I like 'Heat of the Moment'. Fun fact about the song I learned from an interview with the singer of Asia; guy actually claims "And now you find yourself in '82" isn't a reference to the year the song was released. Yeah, nice try to make your song look like it's not outdated. And I like about three of the songs (Including "Heat of The Moment" which is actually borderline Top 10 for me) on that Top 10 and can tolerate about three or four more. Again, I stress I'm kind of lame music-taste wise.
Edwin MacPhisto Posted October 22, 2007 Report Posted October 22, 2007 I actually do like "Heat of the Moment" when I'm drunk, but it just seemed right there. And I legitimately enjoy Journey's best singles.
Corey_Lazarus Posted October 22, 2007 Report Posted October 22, 2007 10. Send More Paramedics - "Zombie Crew" 9. Cannibal Corpse - "Fucked With a Knife" 8. Municipal Waste - "Unleash the Bastards" 7. Pantera - "Strength Beyond Strength" 6. Zombie Apocalypse - "Tale Told by a Dead Man" (really, EVERYBODY must hear this song) 5. White Zombie - "Electric Head Pt. I - The Agony" 4. Metallica - "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)" 3. The Misfits - "Skulls" 2. Slayer - "Angel of Death" 1. The Misfits - "Hybrid Moments" That's as of this week or so.
AboveAverage484 Posted October 23, 2007 Report Posted October 23, 2007 Bruce Springsteen - "Thunder Road" Bob Seger - "Against the Wind" Derek and the Dominoes - "Layla" U2 - "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" Neutral Milk Hotel - "Holland, 1945" The Cure - "Just Like Heaven" Hüsker Dü - "Makes No Sense at All" The Smiths - "The Boy With the Thorn in His Side" Jackson Browne - "Running on Empty" Alabama - "Mountain Music"
godthedog Posted October 24, 2007 Report Posted October 24, 2007 Sam Cooke - You Send Me/Bring it on Home to Me (from Live at the the Harlem Square Club 1963) I don't want you, operator...I want my baaaaaaaaaaaaaaby!
Edwin MacPhisto Posted October 24, 2007 Report Posted October 24, 2007 Fuck yeah. Maximum pimpage, maximum greatness.
Giuseppe Zangara Posted October 26, 2007 Author Report Posted October 26, 2007 The Kinks - Victoria Joy Division - Transmission Echo and the Bunnymen - The Killing Moon XTC - Senses Working Overtime The Wedding Present - Dalliance The Velvet Underground - Heroin David Bowie - Queen Bitch Mission of Burma - That's When I Reach for My Revolver Love - Alone Again Or The Clash - Train in Vain I happen to still love all these songs, but it's no top ten list these days. Fuck this thread.
Giuseppe Zangara Posted October 26, 2007 Author Report Posted October 26, 2007 Like how could I not include Wire's "Ex-Lion Tamer" in that list? I was well aware and plenty appreciative of that song then, but it's not on that list. Why not? Such a great song.
PLAGIARISM! Posted October 26, 2007 Report Posted October 26, 2007 It's defo on my list and was from the moment I heard it. I'm too drunk to compile my list now though, it would def include 'Heat of the Moment' if compiled right now.
Giuseppe Zangara Posted October 26, 2007 Author Report Posted October 26, 2007 John Wetton's finest hour.
pochorenella Posted October 31, 2007 Report Posted October 31, 2007 John Wetton's finest hour. I'd say "The Smile Has Left Your Eyes" is a better performance from Wetton vocal-wise. "Only Time Will Tell" switches places with "Heat of the Moment" as a fave of mine from time to time.
Lt. Al Giardello Posted April 30, 2008 Report Posted April 30, 2008 1. "Jungle Love" by Morris Day and The Time... The rest in no order... "Get It Up" by Sticky Fingaz "Seen a Man Die" by Scarface "Throw Ya Gunz" by Onyx "If I Die 2Nite" by 2Pac “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” by Marvin Gaye "Soul Food" by Goodie Mob "Feel Me" by Jadakiss "Release Yo 'Delf" by Method Man "Baby Be Mine" by Michael Jackson
Nighthawk Posted April 30, 2008 Report Posted April 30, 2008 Picking favorite songs is an impossible task. This is still true, but good thread to bump... I'll do it now, with the qualifier that it constantly changes, which I'm sure you knew already. Nothing, but nothing is remotely permanent here... This is one of those "check in occasionally" threads. 1. Tommy James and the Shondells - "Crimson and Clover" 2. The Miracles - "Tracks of My Tears" 3. Connie Stevens - "Sixteen Reasons" 4. The Tornadoes - "Telstar" 5. The Everly Brothers - "Cathy's Clown" 6. Little Richard - "Lucille" 7. Chuck Berry - "Little Queenie" 8. Them - "Gloria" 9. Buddy Holly "Peggy Sue" 10. The Coasters - "Charlie Brown" Yeah... I listen to a lot of oldies right now. But those are all great songs, no matter what.
King Kamala Posted April 30, 2008 Report Posted April 30, 2008 As of this moment, in no particular order Roxy Music- "If There Is Something" Wings- "Let Me Roll It" Bob Dylan- "Isis" John Lennon- "Oh Yoko" The Clash- "Train in Vain" Bruce Springsteen- "Racing in The Street" The Zombies- "I Love You" Darondo- "Didn't I" David Bowie- "Word on a Wing" The Rolling Stones- "She Was Hot" Again, a weird list. Who else has a post Tattoo You Rolling Stones song on their list, huh?
Edwin MacPhisto Posted April 30, 2008 Report Posted April 30, 2008 Prince - I Could Never Take The Place of Your Man New Order - Temptation Sam Cooke - You Send Me/Bring it on Home to Me (from Live at the the Harlem Square Club 1963) The Wrens - Rest Your Head Tom Waits - Downtown Train The Beatles - You Never Give Me Your Money Wu-Tang Clan - Protect Ya Neck Pixies - Debaser Neutral Milk Hotel - Holland, 1945 The Replacements - Left of the Dial Still pretty good, even if I wouldn't make all the same picks at this moment. I could trade "Debaser" for "Where is My Mind?" and probably swap Wu-Tang for "Ain't No Fun (If The Homes Can't Have None)." I originally said that only the Prince and New Order songs were certain permanent fixtures, but two years later it's safe to say that "Downtown Train" and Sam Cooke live aren't going anywhere either. So, I've got 4 favorite songs!
Guest Tzar Lysergic Posted April 30, 2008 Report Posted April 30, 2008 I fucking hate "Crimson and Clover."
Guest Tzar Lysergic Posted April 30, 2008 Report Posted April 30, 2008 Sleep-Dopesmoker Isis-In Fiction Neurosis-A Chronology for Survival Slayer-Postmortem Frank Zappa-Big Swifty King Crimson-One More Red Nightmare John Coltrane-My Favorite Things (is it fair to include the way he evolved this standard over the years?) King Crimson-21st Century Schizoid Man Neurosis-Through Silver In Blood Neurosis-Souls At Zero I got lazy towards the end and just threw in my favorite Neurosis. I'm still fine with my earlier assessment of "Dopesmoker" and nine ANb songs.
PILLS! PILLS! PILLS!
