Guest Macaroni Report post Posted May 24, 2006 The Pounce, the FU, the legendary Heart Punch - all examples of finishers that most say don't really have the "oomph" to warrant being the move that puts an opponent down for three - count. But surely there's a couple everyone secretly enjoys, for whatever reason. For me, I loved Meng / Haku's Tongan Death Grip. Granted, it would always be preceeded by him yelling and throwing his arms in random directions (making the move that much more awesome), but the move itself is super - cheesy. Everyone else? Maztinho 0 Report post Posted May 24, 2006 The Heart Punch sold properly and having the psychology explained isn't that weak. I'll have to second the Tongan Death Grip. It was just so... odd. I loved it, especially with Afro Thunder Meng.
FroGG_NeaL 0 Report post Posted May 24, 2006 Yeah, with that fro flying around, arms flailing wildly, the scream... Then once it was on, the match was almost always over. Awesome finisher.

Just John 0 Report post Posted May 24, 2006 I also like the Tongan death grip. I liked the Angle slam before everyone from HHH to Funaki could kick out of it.
JST 0 Report post Posted May 24, 2006 I never liked the Angle Slam. It looks like a Samoan Drop only if you hold the guy differently. As for favorite, Warrior's Clotheslines/Press Slam/Splash sequence always entertained me.
Guest hasbeen Report post Posted May 24, 2006 Garvin stomp. Guess it was sometimes a setup to the Garvin punch, though. If so, Garvin punch.

cabbageboy 0 Report post Posted May 24, 2006 I can't believe no one has mentioned the claw hold. I don't personally think the heart punch is that weak of a finish, since if you actually hit someone as hard as you could in the chest that would hurt like hell. Even stuff like the Garvin Stomp would really hurt like hell if someone did it to you in real life. But the claw hold? It's hilarious and in real life couldn't possibly hurt anyone. I especially like the Kerry Von Erich version he used vs. Lawler at that AWA PPV, where he put the claw on Jerry's belly! God bless Lawler for selling it, haha. I'd have burst out laughing, since it would have tickled more than anything.

Corey_Lazarus 0 Report post Posted May 24, 2006 Yeah, really. The Claw Hold relied on pressure points, though I concur it's a pretty weak visual. I'll never, EVER say that The Worm was a terrible finisher, considering it's a fucking KARATE CHOP TO THE THROAT, which could crush your larynx.

I'd say the Thesz Press, I mean come on its basically the "penis to the face " (begter name for it as per Mick Foleys book)
ChrisMWaters 0 Report post Posted May 24, 2006 Hogan's Touch of Death on Kevin Nash. One hold that couldn't actually really be put-down-level but still hurts is Crush's ol' Cranium Crush move.
FroGG_NeaL 0 Report post Posted May 25, 2006 The CLAW! Man, It's the fucking CLAW! That shit was like the touch of death when we had wrestling matches as kids. If you grab someone with the right amount of pressure, in the right places you can fuck 'em up bad. Especially if you have it applied corectly on someone's head, temples, forehead and all that. But yeah... The CLAW!, man.

spman 0 Report post Posted May 27, 2006 The Cranium Crunch was awful, but the all time worst finisher has to be the Discus Punch.
cabbageboy 0 Report post Posted May 27, 2006 At least the discus punch is still a PUNCH though. As in yeah you might swing wildly and miss but if you do hit then it would likely hurt someone bad.
DangerousDamon 0 Report post Posted May 27, 2006 The Colt 45 doesn't look impactful at all. The only time it's looked good was All Star Extravaganza on Jack Evans. And that time Cabana and Steel did the Colt 46(same move, except Steel does a neckbreaker) and killed Alex Shelley dead.
Vampiro69 0 Report post Posted May 27, 2006 I like all the Meng love being mentioned in this thread. I must admit that I have always like Ricky Steamboats finisher off the top rope. All he did was roll through a cross body off the turnbuckle for the pin attempt. It was lame as heck, but when he busted it out you thought that it was the end of the match. Rendclaw 0 Report post Posted May 28, 2006 Outback Jack's Clotheline to the back of the head. Meng was just a total badass, though I liked him better when he and The Tonga Kid made the tag team of the Islanders. Not to even mention that at the time, only Rocky Johnson had a better dropkick than Meng.

cabbageboy 0 Report post Posted May 28, 2006 Gotta disagree on the dropkick. Jim Brunzell had bar none the best dropkick in the business back in the 1980s. He would nail someone in the face with it.
fisticuffs 0 Report post Posted May 31, 2006 Hogan's been mentioned, but his leg drop wasn't specifically mentioned. Jim Duggan's shoulder/chop block out of the 3 point stance always got me on my feet as a little kid.
ChrisMWaters 0 Report post Posted May 31, 2006 Hogan's been mentioned, but his leg drop wasn't specifically mentioned. A 300 Pound man dropping his leg across your throat... Well, I know everyone does legdrops nowadays, but still...
Rendclaw 0 Report post Posted June 1, 2006 just like Jake doing the DDT. When he busted it out, it was the deadliest finisher second maybe to Orndorff's jumping piledriver and nowadays everyone does it. Brunzell's dropkick was good, but that's taken down a peg by the fact that it was all he was known for, and nothing else when separated from Brian Blair. Not to mention Meng could dropkick you in the face doing it *barefoot*. Don;t get me wrong. I loved the Killer Bees back in the day.
Special K 0 Report post Posted June 1, 2006 I like Jerry Lawler's fistdrop. Yeah, the Heart Punch would hurt, but so would getting socked in the face 20-30 times which often happens in a wrestling match. Shane Douglas's Belly-to-Belly of death had the impact of a basic body slam and was treated like death after 10 chair shots. He gets credit back for using the AWESOME Pittsburgh Plunge (Fishermen's buster into small package) And I marked out for the Greetings from Asbury Park. If done correctly, it would be fucking devastating(Rikishi always did it really well.) but Bam-Bam always left their heads above the canvas by at least a foot, making it really funny-looking. Here's one that might be a little more controversial: The Swanton Bomb. It's a beautiful, rather death-defying move, but it basically amounts to "Ow, your shoulder skimmed me while you just threw yourself off the top rope." Again, it's a really pretty move, but almost any other top rope move looks it has more actual impact on the victim.
Frankie Williams 0 Report post Posted June 1, 2006 Although it never happened, I once heard Jay Leno tell a story about how he was approached by a wrestling promoter in the late 70's. The idea was to have Leno as a wrestling comedian, who would finish off his opponents by whispering a joke in his ear, which would be so funny, that Leno would end up getting the pin as the guy was laying on the mat laughing his ass off.
