Middle East Tensions Exploding

Recommended Posts

IsraelNN.com) The United Nations Security Council is to vote on a resolution condemning Israel for its retaliation in the Gaza region following heavy Kassam rocket attacks. A close vote is expected. The United States wants to postpone the vote until after the weekend, but Qatar wants a vote Thursday night.

The United States is lobbying the council's 15 member nations to vote against the motion, while Qatar is pressing for its passage. A two-thirds majority is required to pass the resolution. France said it will vote for it.

Surprise surprise.

I'd give Tyler full points for being prophetic on that, but unfortunately, I think many of us knew that was coming. Still, at least you know what's up, Tyler.

Seriously, though.......Fuck the U.N. Israel could be entirely engulfed in flames due to Arab military attacks and they would STILL condemn the Israelis for defending themselves.

In answer to Danville: part of why I like Israel so much? Is because they really DON'T fucking care. They realized a looooooooong time ago that the number of countries who really are true allies, who would not want to see them wiped out by Arab / Muslim aggression, is so small as to probably be counted on one hand. So they'll gladly tell the U.N. to fuck off. Why not? It's not as if the U.N. will ever have their best interests at heart.

Same old Israel.

Can they just not accept the land they are occuping is not there's and piss off.

Well if you go way back................ In the Bible, the Israelites took the land from the Cannites. Then they lost a few times. The Palestinian people were actually going to attack the Ottoman Turks but they settled in the area that they are currently in.

Well now! Did Lebanon step hip deep in the shit this time or what? I guess there is no holding back the tide on this one. Well ok then. Get to killing each other and get it over with. Then we'll see after it is all over just how WORTH IT that it was. Idiots.

This thread is so one sided......there's two sides to every story.

Israel has also captured hundreds of prisoners... that were never charged with a crime nor put in front of a trial.

Extremists on both sides (Zionists and islamists) are the ones that benefit with violence. It's the moderates (the silent majority) that lose with every conflict.

With every act of terror (suicide bombers in Israel, military bombings on commercial airports in Lebanon), all it does is push the moderates on both sides more to the extreme.

It takes two to dance, and both sides are as guilty (or innocent)....depends the way you see it. I am a Christian from lebanese descent. The family and friends I have who are still in Lebanon (all Christian) condemn uninimously what Israel has done. So it's not only "arab, muslim, terrorists" that dissaprove from Israel's antics today. Will the strategy of coercive force really solve the problem? This strategy will only turn fundamentalists more to the extreme and create another generation of hate. Given the fact that Muslims are reproducing faster than any other race....this is a dangerous game to play. We're turning in circles for decades now....because both sides are using the same antics. it's time to look at the bigger picture instead of using bandade solutions.

America is not ours. If you live here, you clearly don't understand that it's not yours. So piss off.

Most Native Americans have got it pretty good. The Palestinians have an average income of 2 dollars a day. Now the government of Israel doesn't think they should have electricity, water, roads or bridges.

USA deals with the insurgents and terrorists in Iraq by focusing on them, while at the same time helping to build schools for the Iraqi children, etc. Making life a living hell for the Iraqi civilians is not on the agenda for the USA.

Israel has launched 6,000 shells into tiny Gaza just since March. Civilians trying to relax on a beach, and Israel launches shells onto them, killing more children as usual. Israel's disregard for civilians is well documented by human rights groups, some of them Christian.

There was a big controversy over the alleged incident with the US soldiers killing some Iraqi civilians - even if that is true that is nothing compared to Israel's actions. Why is not the focus on taking out their government and the terror leaders. Gaza is a tiny place, why so hard to locate the leaders?

This is a much more confusing and scary situation than any of us that don't live near there can imagine. It's easy to sit in your safe nation behind your keyboard and be all like "oh yeah, i want to see all these people kill each other!"

People will take more notice when all this leads to gas being 10 dollars a gallon.

It's America's fault, or at least President Bush's. Of course.

Mitchell concluded from the State Department, without naming any names: "Tonight, critics in both parties say the administration has been so focused on Iraq and Afghanistan, it has failed to pay enough attention to the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians. Andrea Mitchell, NBC News, at the State Department."

Most people fail to mention that many Christians living in the Middle east are not on Israel's side when it chooses to use military action and kill as many innocent civilians as the suicide bombers do.

There was a show here in Canada interviewing Christians living in the middle east and a good number of them condemn the way Israel conducts its business in the middle east and even blame them for feuling more hate among the moderate muslims.

The myth that only muslims dissaprove Israel's ways is just that...a myth.

When a thread about Middle East peace gets references to Eddie Izzard and Morissey worked into it, I know I'm in the right place.

This stuff makes me laugh. It's like people in both parties were OVERLY concerned with the Israeli-Palestinian peace process days before all hell broke loose over there.

I was using the "two can play that game" card when I said that America isn't ours, that's all. I know what the risk of this is and I don't want to enter further into the zionist against muslims talk.

Am I the only one who seems to remember that the Lebanese prime minister is supposedly, according to the right anyways, one of the few better more moderate (relatively speaking) leaders in the middle east? Isnt anyone else worried about him getting destabilized and lebanon getting an extremist leader? ie the same worry people have about musharraf and pakistan.

Israel destroys home of Hezbollah leader

BEIRUT, Lebanon - Israel destroyed the home and office of Hezbollah's leader Friday and tightened its seal on Lebanon, blasting its air and road links to the outside world to punish the guerrilla group — and with it, the country — for the capture of two Israeli soldiers. Hezbollah's Sheik Hassan Nasrallah and his family were safe after missiles demolished the two buildings in Beirut's crowded southern neighborhoods, Hezbollah said.

Only the first part of my post was in reply to yours. The rest was just about the subject in general.

WTF is Israel supposed to do instead, pray?

There is that Geneva Convention thing they agreed to which protects civilians. There was the big uproar over that whole Abu Ghraib prison thing. That was done against prisoners - people thought to be dangerous enemies. Israel launches missiles into schools and other public areas and has destroyed 1000s of civilian homes.

It's 2006 and we have spy satellites from space that can zoom in and read license plates on the ground. It shouldn't be too hard for them to figure out where the Hamas leaders are and blow them up. You have extremist leaders on both sides who won't be satisfied with anything less than some super war and they know that they can provoke this to happen by attacking civilians.

While you make a good argument there is a dillema: many of the terror targets Israel is trying to eliminate operate in densely populated areas so there will always be some segment of "collateral damage" whether intended or not. Operating in such zones gives these terror groups a win-win situation because they continue to attack Israel and then when there is a response civilians get killed which a) gets an international condemnation by way of the usual gang like France and the UN and b) gives them more ammunition to recruit fighters from.

Also, even if Israel used the satellite technology you speak of and such or had another way of directly pinpointing the members of Hamas or Hezbollah that is no guarantee that some civilians may not be maimed or killed.

Didn't Israel drop fliers into Beirut before it launched further attacks to stay away from Hezbollah controlled buildings and such? Since I think they did at least that's part of a fair warning for what is to come versus the unpredictable nature of terror attacks that Israel has endured for decades.

Interview with Mark Perry of Conflicts Forum:

We’ve been hearing the theory that the timing of Hezbollah’s Tuesday kidnapping of the two Israeli Defense Force soldiers was planned well in advance and with coordination from Tehran or Damascus. Can you speak to that?

Oy vey. There are a lot of people in Washington trying to walk that story back right now, because it’s not true.

Hezbollah and Israel stand along this border every day observing each other through binoculars and waiting for an opportunity to kill each other. They are at war. They have been for 25 years, no one ever declared a cease-fire between them. … They stand on the border every day and just wait for an opportunity. And on Tuesday morning there were two Humvees full of Israeli soldiers, not under observation from the Israeli side, not under covering fire, sitting out there all alone. The Hezbollah militia commander just couldn’t believe it -- so he went and got them.

The Israeli captain in charge of that unit knew he had really screwed up, so he sent an armored personnel carrier to go get them in hot pursuit, and Hezbollah led them right through a minefield.

Now if you’re sitting in Tehran or Damascus or Beirut, and you are part of the terrorist Politburo so to speak, you have a choice. With your head sunk in your hands, thinking "Oh my God," you can either give [the kidnapped soldiers] back and say "Oops, sorry, wrong time" or you can say, "Hey, this is war."

Maybe President Bush could step in and spend some of that political capital he has earned since 9-11 with all the other countries of the world.

What? He doesn't have any? Well damn! Foresight just isn't all that reliable these days.
