Guest Felonies! Report post Posted July 28, 2006 If it's such a seller's market, the Cubs should've gotten more for Scott Williamson than two garbage Single-A prospects. I understand he'd just be a two-month rental and all, but all we hear is GENERAL MANAGERS WILL SUCK DICK FOR PITCHING! and we just got some kid named Fabian and some kid named Joel Santo. I bet they have arm problems too.

Cheech Tremendous 0 Report post Posted July 28, 2006 The idea behind the "seller's market" is overblown in relation to the state of most major league teams today. It is becoming increasinly obvious that teams are not really willing to give up top quality prospects for a two-month rental. Contracts are too steep these days, and unless you can work out an extension in a short negotiating window, it doesn't make economic sense to lose prospects who can contribute in a year or two at a fraction of the cost. You can't fill multiple holes through free agency, thus necessitating a strong AA and AAA system. Conversely, teams who are out of it have less incentive to deal than ever before. Once the big market teams shy away from dealing their top prospects, it becomes more advantageous for a team to just hold their player until the offseason where they can get two draft picks just by offering arbitration. The most obvious example of this in practice is the way the Red Sox and Yankees have approached the trade deadline. Despite being major market teams that are willing to spend dollars to win, their respective FO's have taken a hard-line stance against dealing prospects for overpriced veterans. That's a complete reversal from where these teams stood one, two or three years ago and it effectively sets the market for the rest of the league.
Guest Report post Posted July 28, 2006 I'm not saying that the Brewers should have paid Carlos Lee, but if they ever want to compete, they better be willing to pay the guys that they have or go out there and get someone. They could have got more for him.
EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted July 28, 2006 It's a fairly even trade I think. What impresses me is that the Brewers snagged Scott Podsednik off waivers and flipped him later on to the White Sox to get Carlos Lee in the first place.
Dobbs 3K 0 Report post Posted July 28, 2006 I'm not saying that the Brewers should have paid Carlos Lee, but if they ever want to compete, they better be willing to pay the guys that they have or go out there and get someone. They could have got more for him. They offered him 4 years/$48 million dollars, which is fair for the market, but probably still too high. How much higher could they have really gone? In two years Carlos Lee might be broken down. I don't think they could have gotten more for him in a trade, if that's what you meant. Doug Melvin has been a very competent manager thus far for the Brewers. I'm sure he took the best trade he was offered. Again, no team was going to give up an elite hitter or pitcher for a two month "rental" player.
Guest Report post Posted July 28, 2006 Certain teams would have given the Brewers more if they would have waited until Sunday or Monday. Not that the deal was terrible, but it was centered around Fransisco Cordero. The Brewers need to be willing to spend money if they want to compete, which is the point I was making. I think the best example is one of the Blue Jays. I wouldn't have given that money to Lee.
Cheech Tremendous 0 Report post Posted July 28, 2006 Certain teams would have given the Brewers more if they would have waited until Sunday or Monday. Not that the deal was terrible, but it was centered around Fransisco Cordero. The Brewers need to be willing to spend money if they want to compete, which is the point I was making. I think the best example is one of the Blue Jays. I wouldn't have given that money to Lee. They showed that they were willing to spend money. They offered 4/$48 to Lee and he rejected it. That's a lot of money for a hitter of his age, and offering more isn't a commitment to win, it's payroll suicide. The Brewers were able to haul three major league players, albeit of varying success, instead of minor leaguers that do nothing for a team that is still in some form in a playoff race (albeit a slim, slim chance). The team needed a closer ASAP. Adding Francisco Cordero may not seem like much, but it solidifies that bullpen. Cordero's numbers may look a little shakey this year at first glance, but keep in mind he's going to AL and is moving from an extreme hitter's park. He should have a good future in the NL Central. TheDevilAndGodAreRagingInsideMe 0 Report post Posted July 28, 2006 It's a bad trade because I think if they waited till Monday, they could have gotten a better return.
Guest Report post Posted July 28, 2006 I wouldn't have given that money to Lee. I mean that they should spend money on multiple players and not put all their eggs in one basket. I agree about Cordero, the transition from the AL to the NL is drastic. Jeff Weaver was awful in the AL, but in the NL (not just this year), he's been fine. Cheech Tremendous 0 Report post Posted July 28, 2006 It's a bad trade because I think if they waited till Monday, they could have gotten a better return. What makes you think that? Who would be a buyer of Lee's services and what do you think they would offer? What's a better deal that makes sense that one of the contenders might pursue? the pinjockey 0 Report post Posted July 28, 2006 I can't see them getting much more later, because it appears they were looking for major league players. Prospects might get increased as the deadline approaches, but anyone trading for Lee wouldn't be looking to move better pieces of their 25 man roster at this point. TheDevilAndGodAreRagingInsideMe 0 Report post Posted July 28, 2006 Teams get more desperate the closer to the deadline they are. Come on, Kevin Mench? Fransisco Cordero? They could have done better than that. At least they could have waited and probably gotten the same deal on Monday. What is the rush?
tominator89 0 Report post Posted July 28, 2006 I think the rush is that Lee rejected their contract extention proposal.

Brett Favre 0 Report post Posted July 28, 2006 They are trying to get Craig Wilson, but I think they want Melky. If they can get Wilson without giving up Melky, or any of the top prospects (I doubt they're seriously asking for any of the top prospects [Hughes, Tabata, Duncan, etc.]), then I hope they can get this done. Craig Wilson would fit perfectly with the team.
Precious Roy 0 Report post Posted July 28, 2006 The reason I don't like the Lee deal for Milwaukee is that they gave up the best prospect involved, one of the top prospects in their organization. Does that make sense to anyone? Cruz is 26, but he's got a hell of a lot more upside than Nix. A few years ago I thought Nix might be a player but he hasn't really done anything in the bigs. Showalter is already saying they're bringing Cruz to the show, and plans to start him tommorow. I'm not sure about Cordero. He's been real iffy this year and has always let more baserunners on then you're comfortable with late in the game. I think it's 50/50 he rebounds. Mench is an average player. Julian Cordero is in single A, so who knows what his deal is. I agree with those who say if they held out they could have had a more favorable deal.
Guest Felonies! Report post Posted July 28, 2006 Can't be worse than Ryan Dempster, whom I am convinced must superstitiously walk the bases loaded for good luck. There's no other explanation, other than "he isn't good," of course.

I expected Cashman to try and get Soriano or Abreu, which I'm glad he hasn't.
Brett Favre 0 Report post Posted July 28, 2006 It's not a trade, but there's a rumor going around that Yuliesky Gourriel defected to the Yankees. I don't have a true source, but it's been heard by more than one party (only reason i'm posting this). Just wanted to throw that out there if people start hearing about it in the coming days. That would be awesome, but where the hell would they play him? As far as trades go, Cashman was on with Francesa the other day and the vibe I got is that he has no interest in trading any of the young players or any top prospects. I seriously doubt we see a deal for Abreu or Soriano or anyone like that, but it won't stop people from talking about it constantly all weekend
vivalaultra 0 Report post Posted July 28, 2006 The daily Astros/Tejada update: Baseball Prospectus says that the Astros are really, really commited to getting Miguel Tejada. Roger Clemens is one of the most vocal endorses of Tejada. The new deal proposed by the Astros, which I think is worse for the O's but better for the 'Stros, is Everett, Nieve, and Morgan Ensberg for Tejada. What the Orioles would want with Ensberg when they have Melvin Mora, I'm not sure, but...hey...that trade would be great for the Astros.

the pinjockey 0 Report post Posted July 29, 2006 David Bell to the Brewers for a minor league reliever Wilfrido Laureano. I thought Bell's decent run here might have bumped his status enough to get more than roster filler back but oh well. Of course that now results in........."And now starting at 3B for the Phillies, Abe ".150/.186/.221/.408" Nunez" I doubt even the Phillies would take the backlash from placing a .150 hitter in the lineup, or at least I hope. Chris Coste played well at third base last year for Scranton, and I think he can hold down the job. What's convenient here is that this move also frees up a spot on the 40 man roster for Randy Wolf.
