KingPK Posted July 30, 2006 Report Posted July 30, 2006 Who do you think is the most likely candidate to win Rookie of the Year in the National League? Ryan Zimmerman. Suddenly my pick for the 2009 USA team doesn't look too shabby. And the AL? Everyone (and I agree) says it's pretty much Liriano's to lose right now with Verlander and Papelbon close behind. What say you?

Mik Posted July 30, 2006 Report Posted July 30, 2006 Do you finally care to rethink your preseason position on the Florida Marlins? (No chance in hell I was forgetting 100+ loss predictions)
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted July 30, 2006 Author Report Posted July 30, 2006 Do you finally care to rethink your preseason position on the Florida Marlins? (No chance in hell I was forgetting 100+ loss predictions) Yes. I am happy that I was wrong. It's great to see such a young team perform beyond expectations.
Guest Felonies! Posted July 30, 2006 Report Posted July 30, 2006 Chance of a Dusty extension? I say over 50%.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted July 30, 2006 Author Report Posted July 30, 2006 Chance of a Dusty extension? I say over 50%. Not good. GMs almost never tip their hands on these things. It's common practice to stick behind your personnel as long as they're in charge.
Guest Felonies! Posted July 30, 2006 Report Posted July 30, 2006 Okay, so who gets the job? Ryne Sandberg would be a sentimental favorite, but I've been told his Yahoo! Sports columns read like Joe Morgan. No thank you.

TheDevilAndGodAreRagingInsideMe Posted July 30, 2006 Report Posted July 30, 2006 Just promote Todd Walker to player/manager.

Though really, anyone would be a disciplinarian compared to Mr. Clark Street Country Club here. I'd want someone with Tony La Russa's red-hot-poker-up-the-ass demeanor, but not his incessant bullpen micromanagement.
Bruiser Chong Posted July 30, 2006 Report Posted July 30, 2006 With the acquisition of Abreu and a decent starter, do the Yanks become become the favorites for either the East or the WC, or are they still lacking behind Boston, Chicago, and to an extent, Minnesota?

The Yankees right now are the favorites to win the AL East.
Guest Felonies! Posted July 31, 2006 Report Posted July 31, 2006 Well so much for Boston finally winning the East. Ugh.
Guest StylesMark Posted July 31, 2006 Report Posted July 31, 2006 Well so much for Boston finally winning the East. I like this. What is the future of Gary Sheffield, now, since the Abreu signing?

Guest StylesMark Posted July 31, 2006 Report Posted July 31, 2006 I know. Do you think he "retires a Yankee" as he's hinted, and the Yankees sign him to a 1 year DH deal? Or would his asking price be FAR too high?
Guest NYankees Posted July 31, 2006 Report Posted July 31, 2006 What went wrong for the Indians this year? Do you see the manager surviving for next year?

Or would his asking price be FAR too high? It's hard to say. I think Sheffield's overall skills outside of his hitting are far diminished. The Yanks are better served letting him walk. What went wrong for the Indians this year? Do you see the manager surviving for next year? I think the Indians overperformed last year and came back to earth. Eric Wedge will have another year I think.
Guest StylesMark Posted July 31, 2006 Report Posted July 31, 2006 Will having Abreu in RF turn Sheffield more negative than usual upon his return? Or might he see this as his last chance at a pinstripe WS run?
Bruiser Chong Posted July 31, 2006 Report Posted July 31, 2006 Do you think it's fair that people have been so critical of Wedge? They loved him last year, but being under .500 this season has a lot of people calling for his head. Seems like it's more a case of the talent still developing and the pitching just not being there.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted July 31, 2006 Author Report Posted July 31, 2006 Will having Abreu in RF turn Sheffield more negative than usual upon his return? Or might he see this as his last chance at a pinstripe WS run? Sheffield's always been a bad apple in his contract year. I think he'll fall in line though. He's vocal but otherwise not a troublemaker. Do you think it's fair that people have been so critical of Wedge? They loved him last year, but being under .500 this season has a lot of people calling for his head. Seems like it's more a case of the talent still developing and the pitching just not being there. The manager is always the scapegoat. Most of the time, he's not the problem. Wedge is a former Red Baron so I can't be impartial on the topic.
Red Baron Posted August 2, 2006 Report Posted August 2, 2006 Does the Blue Jays have a decent shot at the wild card position.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted August 2, 2006 Author Report Posted August 2, 2006 Does the Blue Jays have a decent shot at the wild card position. I usually refer to Baseball Prospectus' Playoff Odds Report. They give the Blue Jays about a 4% chance of the division, and 5% at the wild card, for 9% overall. That sounds low, but it is a shot. As long as they have a chance, sit back and enjoy the race.
Styles Posted August 2, 2006 Report Posted August 2, 2006 Liriano, Verlander, Papelbon, has there ever been anything like this before? How incredible that (arguably) the 3 top candidates for the AL Cy Young award are all top candidates for the ROY award as well. Is this as unprecedented as it seems?

I don't recall something like it in my recollection, though I'm sure it's happened before. Keep in mind though these pitchers are still performing a bit above expectations. They could tail off a bit.
vivalaultra Posted August 2, 2006 Report Posted August 2, 2006 Should Adam Everett win the NL Gold Glove this season? Is he the best defensive shortstop in baseball, as The Fielding Bible proclaimed him to be?
Precious Roy Posted August 2, 2006 Report Posted August 2, 2006 On Sheff, he came out and said he was psyched about the deal because it gave them a better shot at winning rings. He also said he just wants to come back healthy, and will do anything Torre asks him to do, including playing first or third. Typical Sheff, everyone expects him to do one thing so he does the opposite I'm not sure what to expect next year. I doubt the Yankees will pick up his $13 mil option, but I'm sure they'd take him back at roughly half of that. Would Sheff accept that? Probably depends on what other teams are offering. I'm not so sure he could command much better than that on the open market. He's 38, diminished in the field, bad reputation and whispers of steroid use, plus he's coming off a lingering injury.
Guest Princess Leena Posted August 2, 2006 Report Posted August 2, 2006 He'll be nice now while he's still hurt. Wait a month, and we'll be hearing how he's the biggest star on the Yanks again.
Vern Gagne Posted August 2, 2006 Report Posted August 2, 2006 Does Joe Mauer have what it takes to be the greatest catcher of all-time?
