Let the speculation begin~

Thought it appears to have something to do with the Enterprise and TOS since that is the old TOS logo with the specific Enterprise insignia, unless they retcon something. Kirk + Spock at Starfleet Academy? Could it be something like the books that featured Kirk and his father?

Add in the rumors of Matt Damon playing Kirk... Who ever they get to play Spock will either sell or sink this project.

There was an interview with Abrams in TV Guide this week where he basically reveals nothing. As tight-lipped as he's being with his plans, I'll take everything I read online about casting and plot with a grain of salt. In other words, I'm calling 100% bullshit on the "Matt Damon is playing Captain Kirk" rumor. From what it sounds like in the interview, they've yet to set any concrete plans as to what it'll even be about. Abrams' script for Superman may have been too-Matrixy, but he's done some great work in the past (i.e. the first 2 seasons of "Alias" and "Lost"), and some not-so-great work ("Felicity") that causes me to think that the Superman script was just a fluke (even though it did have a few good ideas in it). People shouldn't judge the guy's abilties based on some uncomfirmed speculation and a 3-year-old script review from "Aint It Cool News." In other words, I'm going to need more info before I start bad-mouthing this thing.

considering how utterly lame and trash the last 4 ST properties (2 tv and 2 movie) have been, even if Abrams pulled a "superman" (which i doubt, as he has said interviews where he is going to respect the trek canon), it would by default be AT LEAST as "good" as the last 4 if not better.

Enterprise got a lot better the last 2 years, thanks to Manny Coto.[/Trek apologist mode]

Yeah, but you said that was the one that was definitely rejected, right?

Yes, but they need to really shake things up, not go back to the Kirk era and rehash it with different actors. It will come off like the Brady Bunch and Leave it to Beaver movies.

I want a Deep Space Nine movie. This prequel stuff sounds like shit. They do know that some Star Trek fans don't care for the TOS right?

They dropped the ball with ST9. It should have been about the Enterprise's role in the Dominion War, perhaps including cameos from a few of the DS9 crew. Instead, they had some dialogue about how the strechy-faced guys were allies of the Dominion.

1. The DS9 cast probably wouldn't work because the show has been over for so long. You could use them in bit roles.

2. Voyager/Enterprise wouldn't work just because of the general opinon of suckitude.

3. You are now left with either a TNG or TOS supported cast that is not marred in anyway or creating something new that would link to one or the other. This will be difficult in some ways since there are no current show to drive it from.

On an side note... They totally need to use the Guardian in a movie.

My bet is that they'll create a new ship and crew just for the new movie.

They haven't done a movie or TV show with the Star Trek: New Frontier property. However, that's probably because that series is a little raunchier, and has a lot of adult themes in it, such as sexuality, extreme violence (The kind of stuff they only hinted at with the Cardassian Occupation of Bajor), and a main character which is from a hermaphroditic species. New Frontier tends to be the black sheep of the Star Trek Universe.

Could be a black sheep due to the fact that it's only a book series, and most people don't consider the books as cannon. Hell the only thing worse than Star Wars Book "Cannon" is Trek Book "Cannon".

I don't get all the Enterprise and Nemesis hate. Sure DS9 set the bar high, but it was a completely different way of Story Telling in the Trek universe with continuing story arcs more like a Soap Opera, instead of self contained episodic story telling found in Voyager, TOS, Enterprise and TNG. It was new and fresh. Enterprise at least had interesting characters and it was fun visiting certain aspecs of the Trek Mythos for the "first" time. Voyager was completely a waste of time up until it's finale, which was decent despite the mass extermination of the Borg Race.

And this new movie has a good chance of equally blowing goats or being better than it has any right to be. Abrams Superman treatment was nothing more than a rape of the IP and the character. I have an open mind about this movie, I just don't want it to be over Hollywood-ized. What they should tell are the stories between TMP and TOS.
