JangoFett4Hire 0 Report post Posted August 4, 2006 If you've ever read CMJ, you know in their reviews they have a cool featured Recommended If You Like (RIYL) in which they list bands that are similar in vein to the one being reviewed. Just name a band that you like, and hopefully other can lead you in the direction of cool bands you might not have checked out otherwise. I'll start, if that's ok? Apples in Stereo! Your Paragon of Virtue 0 Report post Posted August 4, 2006 I thought you were kidding, but a quick search leads me to see a description that says Apples In Stereo actually does sound a lot like the Beatles. How about that.
vivalaultra 0 Report post Posted August 4, 2006 If you like Apples in Stereo, try Of Montreal if you haven't...or Olivia Tremor Control. OTC are weird.
Toshiaki Koala 0 Report post Posted August 4, 2006 The Beatles I'll have to check them out.
Giuseppe Zangara 0 Report post Posted August 4, 2006 As much as I like them, Olivia Tremor Control can be frustrating to listen to sometimes. I enjoy me some free jazz and some noise, but it can be a little irritating when they bury some great pop songs underneath static and myriad tape loops. That said, their highs are really, really high: "The Opera House," "Jumping Fences," and especially "NYC .25"...that's just from Dusk at Cubist Castle. The other one, Black Foliage, is good, but with less standout songs and more of the problems I mentioned earlier.
vivalaultra 0 Report post Posted August 4, 2006 This is just conjecture...but I think that there's a possibility, however slight it might be, that Olivia Tremor Control make great use of mind-altering drugs. Can anyone recommend some good singer/songwriters that I haven't heard of?

vivalaultra 0 Report post Posted August 10, 2006 Yeah, I dig Josh Ritter. Haven't heard of the other two, but I'll check em out. Thanks.
snuffbox 0 Report post Posted August 10, 2006 I shared a box of snack crackers with Josh Ritter at last year's Bonnaroo. Good people. You can hear a few songs at Rebecca Moore's myspace - http://www.myspace.com/rebeccamoore Its really more avant-garde-y than it is singer-songwriter-y though. Henry Spencer 0 Report post Posted August 11, 2006 Seriously, though? I'd check out the Soft Boys' Underwater Moonlight, which has a heavy Syd Barrett influence in the lyrics. Or if you're feeling really adventurous, the self titled album by the Silver Apples is sort of like an extremely pop-unfriendly version of The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn.
