bob_barron Posted August 6, 2006 Report Posted August 6, 2006 I wanted to post this before tomorrow's newswire comes out since ROH will never be the same after this Saturday's event in Liverpool. The main event of ROH's debut in the UK on Saturday in Liverpool will see the World and Pure Title unified. There is a press conference in the next ROH Video Recap that will name the rules. Here is a preview: -The bout will feature ROH World Champion Bryan Danielson vs. ROH Pure Champion Nigel McGuinness. -The match will be contested under Pure Title rules so the rope breaks will be in effect and the Pure Title can change hands on DQ and countout, but the World Title can also change hands on a DQ or Countout. -There will be no time limit. -In the event of a double DQ or double countout, the match will be restarted. ROH will never be the same after Liverpool. The first title change of 2006 is GUARANTEED to take place on this event. Liverpool could see the largest crowd in ROH history. There are still tickets available. Check the main page of ROHwrestling.com for details. Be part of history!!! That was posted by Gabe. Well that just sucks.
CheesalaIsGood Posted August 6, 2006 Report Posted August 6, 2006 Well I was hoping KENTA would be the one to take AmDrag down. Here is to hoping this doesn't get in the way of that.
Hawk 34 Posted August 7, 2006 Report Posted August 7, 2006 I don't really see the purpose of unifying the belts when Nigel had made that belt finally mean something. I know Nigel has a wacky schedule where he can't make every show (although, as of late he has appeared at most of the shows). Nigel/Danielson III, was a big enough draw for Liverpool that it didn't need need a stipulation like this. The first match was a classic and the second match was heading that direction before the abrupt finish... Gabe has a reason for doing the things he does and he usually has success in delivering it but I'm pretty confused and disapointed to see Nigel's run with the title come to an end like this after a year of making that title worth something. ROH has had a fantastic year and the first trip for a non-joint show in UK is just another big part of this year. We'll see what happens.
UseTheSledgehammerUh Posted August 7, 2006 Report Posted August 7, 2006 Horrible idea. Just horrible. Mid-card gets cluttered with non-contenders now. The cool Pure title was just producing some awesome, unique matches. Why?
Smartly Pretty Posted August 7, 2006 Report Posted August 7, 2006 You guys are idiots. This is Brilliant. Danielson grants Joe a rematch...for the Pure title.
tigeraid Posted August 7, 2006 Report Posted August 7, 2006 Crap... Is there not ANY way this can end in a double count-out perhaps? Something that means the titles stay the way they are? I love this feud, but I think this is the wrong way to end it. ROH needed that second belt, and Nigel had finally made that belt worth something important. Dammit.
UseTheSledgehammerUh Posted August 7, 2006 Report Posted August 7, 2006 A double-pin is the only way out of the match.
Scroby Posted August 7, 2006 Report Posted August 7, 2006 Ummmmm....why is ROH unifying the titles and since their unifying the two titles will there be another mid-card title down the road?
DangerousDamon Posted August 7, 2006 Report Posted August 7, 2006 Ummmmm....why is ROH unifying the titles and since their unifying the two titles will there be another mid-card title down the road? What the hell could they call the mid card belt? The Strong Style title?
razazteca Posted August 7, 2006 Report Posted August 7, 2006 Since they don't have a tv deal they can call it DIRECT-TO-VIDEO (D2V) Championship.
tigeraid Posted August 7, 2006 Report Posted August 7, 2006 A double-pin is the only way out of the match. Let's hope it happens then. The Cattle Mutilation provides the possibility....
DangerousDamon Posted August 7, 2006 Report Posted August 7, 2006 A double-pin is the only way out of the match. Let's hope it happens then. The Cattle Mutilation provides the possibility.... Nigel destroys Dragon's leg, Dragon goes for a Dragon Suplex or Regalplex, but he can' t bridge and they both get pinned.
The Decemberists Posted August 7, 2006 Report Posted August 7, 2006 Normally I'd be against this, but seeing as I'm going to be there I'm selfishly delighted that I'm (probably) going to see a title change.
EdwardKnoxII Posted August 7, 2006 Report Posted August 7, 2006 Since they don't have a tv deal they can call it DIRECT-TO-VIDEO (D2V) Championship. Or the Internet Championship.
Dobbs 3K Posted August 7, 2006 Report Posted August 7, 2006 Since they don't have a tv deal they can call it DIRECT-TO-VIDEO (D2V) Championship. Or the Internet Championship. I was in a bunch of e-feds back in the day that had that. Maybe the "House Show Title". Or, forget a title belt, and introduce a crown..."King of the Indys" or something.
King Cucaracha Posted August 7, 2006 Report Posted August 7, 2006 Have they actually confirmed that this is the end of the Pure Wrestling Title, or is this just a fancy way of saying 'Title vs. Title'?
Smartly Pretty Posted August 7, 2006 Report Posted August 7, 2006 It's obviously just title vs title. Everyone's being an idiot.
JustJoe2k5 Posted August 7, 2006 Report Posted August 7, 2006 August 7th: In shocking news a press conference was held with ROH World Champion Bryan Danielson and ROH Pure Champion Nigel McGuinness that will air this week in the new ROH Video Recap at ROHvideos.com. We have learned that the Liverpool main event between Danielson and McGuinness will be a title unification match. You are guaranteed to see the first title change of 2006 in Liverpool. The match will be contested under Pure Title rules meaning the rope break rules will be in effect and the Pure Title can change hands by DQ or countout. However, now the ROH World Title can also change hands by DQ or countout. In the event of a double DQ or double countout the match will be restarted. History will be made in Liverpool as the ROH World and Pure Titles will be unified as the classic series between Danielson and England's own McGuinness will continue.
Frosty Posted August 7, 2006 Report Posted August 7, 2006 Unifying the belts don't necessarily mean that they are going to eliminate one belt, boxing titles are unified all the time and it just means that the same person is holding both titles for the time being.
bob_barron Posted August 8, 2006 Author Report Posted August 8, 2006 thank you, Frosty. August 8th: The shocking announcement that there will only be one ROH singles title after this Saturday's Liverpool event has everyone talking. You can see the press conference that sets up this match in the new ROH Video Recap that will be up on ROHvideos.com tomorrow. The heat is building between ROH World Champion Bryan Danielson and ROH Pure Champion Nigel McGuinness as they head into this match. Some are actually considering McGuinness the favorite since Nigel has been so successful in winning recent matches by countout. The World Title can change hands by DQ or countout this Saturday and Danielson will be playing under Pure Rules. Nigel definitely has an advantage under Pure Rules as he has defeated an all star list of competition under Pure Rules including Samoa Joe, Christopher Daniels, Homicide, Roderick Strong, Austin Aries and many more. History will be made and ROH will never be the same after Liverpool. There are still tickets available so check the main page of ROHwrestling.com for info. August 8th: To cover any loopholes for this Saturday's Liverpool main event between Danielson and McGuinness, if the match ends in a double pin it will be restarted just like if it ends in a double DQ or double countout. You are GUARANTEED to see the first title change of 2006 in Liverpool.
tigeraid Posted August 8, 2006 Report Posted August 8, 2006 Well, there goes Nigel's impressive title run. As much as I'm a huge fan of Danielson, and as much as the match will rule, the ramifications still suck.
Bruce Blank Posted August 8, 2006 Report Posted August 8, 2006 They need to replace it with a title that's not a belt but one of those huge ass 7 foot tall trophies that they get when they win a Japanese Tournament (G1?) and then have the 5'7'' champion lug that around from show to show
Smartly Pretty Posted August 8, 2006 Report Posted August 8, 2006 Barron, that has nothing to do with what I said. Nowhere does it say they're eliminating the belt. Just unifying them, which means that one person will be holding two.
King Cucaracha Posted August 8, 2006 Report Posted August 8, 2006 August 8th: The shocking announcement that there will only be one ROH singles title after this Saturday's Liverpool event has everyone talking. I'm still holding out until I actually see it, but that line's got me worried. Getting rid of the Pure Title would be just a dumb move all round. When they don't go the 'both men losing 3 ropebreaks' finish too many matches in a row, the Pure Wrestling Title concept is one of the most innovative and interesting things in the business right now.
bob_barron Posted August 8, 2006 Author Report Posted August 8, 2006 Yea, Nigel's countouts are awesome
King Cucaracha Posted August 8, 2006 Report Posted August 8, 2006 I still love the Walters/Rave match where Walters keeps Rave in the Sharpshooter on the floor until 19, enters the ring and retains the title. I miss Walters.
UseTheSledgehammerUh Posted August 8, 2006 Report Posted August 8, 2006 "there will only be one ROH singles title" - Gabe NOT TWO TITLES. ONE TITLE BELT IS GETTING UNIFIED, WHICH MEANS IT WILL NEVER BE SEEN AGAIN. See: NWA Tag Titles unified with WCW Tag Titles in 92 See: Hardcore Title to IC Title See: "World Title" to WWF Title See: U.S. Title to IC Title See: Euro Title to IC Title See: WCW Tag to WWF Tag Traditionally, unified titles means they can never be defended seperately and the lesser of the titles is discarded.
Mystery Eskimo Posted August 9, 2006 Report Posted August 9, 2006 A strange decision, given how the Pure title has been at its best this year. I guess it could come back further down the line. There's also Survival of the Fittest 2006 coming up soon, I wonder if that might lead into a new title.
