What do you base your love of your favorite team on?

Recommended Posts

Guest Felonies!
I can explain why i "like" everyone of those teams if anyone would like. Ok, so i don't "love" every team that I listed, but people use the "love" word loosely all the time so I didn't think it was that big of a deal. I don't need my loyalties questioned, I know where I stand.

Detroitaramu.

Hey there's no question that I favor Detroit over any other team. I've been to the games, even when the teams sucked major ass. I've got my gear. I've watched meaningless regular season games. The first Tiger season I remember was in '96 when they lost something like 109 games. But I never stopped watching them and these days I feel good about being a fan through all the crappy seasons. I could've stopped watching the Pistons when they got rid of Grant Hill then or Ben Wallace now but that wasn't the case. I've watched the Red Wings well before they won 3 titles in 6 years I've never wavered in my loyalty to Detroit sports. I will easily root for the Tigers over the Red Sox any day of the week. My fondness for Boston stems from a few things: my hate for the Yankees, Fenway Park, and the players, guys like a young Nomar back in '97 and guys like Manny now. However, if Boston and Detroit met in the playoffs someday, I will always go with the Tigers. With all the shit that Millen's done I will still defend him and the Lions. I won't go to the games with a paper bag on my head or any of that other bullshit. After Barry left, I still cheered for the Lions. I'm not a bandwaggoner or fair-weather fan or whatever. I'm a Detroit sports fan. The other teams I listed, I will root for them over all other teams in their respective leagues except Detroit. I can explain why i "like" everyone of those teams if anyone would like. Ok, so i don't "love" every team that I listed, but people use the "love" word loosely all the time so I didn't think it was that big of a deal. I don't need my loyalties questioned, I know where I stand. Is it really that wrong to "like" other teams?

You know, I just realized that one of the major things I love about talking sports with Michiganders(?) is that when you say "Barry" it means Sanders, not Bonds. I actually didn't even realize that we did it here until rereading this.

Treble, I agree 100% with the Jays.

Casual at best Raptors fan. Also geography.

This one's kinda stupid, but anyone here with a brother or sister might empathize with me.

I was a San Jose Sharks fan from the ages of 5-8 because I shared a name with a player on that team (Brian Mullen). He was traded to a team that I forgot two days later (which turned out to be the Isles). So I kinda went into team purgatory. I didn't hate the Leafs, especially as they were getting better in 92-93, but since my brother was a Leafs fan, it wouldn't fly. They played a Saturday night game with my Habs towards the end of the 91-92, which planted the seeds to my becoming a Habs fan. It only intesified as the possibility of an Original Six final loomed the following year.

As for the Raiders, this one's along the same lines. I always watched football as a kid, a Niners fan. My interest waned when Montana left, and eventually retired. I didn't follow fo rmany years, but as silly as this sounds, ESPN NFL 2k5 for Xbox re-piqued my interest, and it was easy to get behind the Raiders with another childhood fav, Jerry Rice in Oakland.

For the Dodgers, it was because I hated the stupid Anaheim Angels logo.

Which one the stupid Disney-fied logo from the mid 90's or the current one?

The Disney one with the wings.

-NFL: Became a Bills fan since they were featured on regional coverage in Montreal a lot and their early 90's dominance was the clincher. I've stuck with them ever since.

-NHL: Huge Steve Yzerman fan and by extension became a huge Red Wings fan. They've been my favorite team since 1996.

-MLB: Lived in Montreal so I was an Expos fan, and I followed them to Washington.

My love of the Yankees came simply cuz my parents were fans and I was born and raised until age 10 in NY. I went to a few games in the early 90s and really got into baseball then. I moved to cali in 94 and didnt change my team, although everyone told me I should, so I was basically the only yankee fan at my junior high and high school(96-2000, yanks won 3 ws in my hs years)

I always go for the NY teams first. Baseball is the only sport I really get into. I care only about the yanks when it comes to MLB, though I do pull for the mets too, to a MUCH lesser degree and now being back in NY I have come to not like them due to their fans hating on me.

I like football and my team is the Giants cuz of my dad , though I will pull for the Jets too

after those sports I dont pay too much attention

but they are

Hockey-Rangers (the 94 championship came just before I moved to cali so I remember it fondly as the first championship for a ny team I actually paid attention to, the giants sbs came before I really liked sports.

Though I did root for the devils in their Big years

Basketball-knicks, but I also pull for the nets

as I said the only sport I really get into is baseball (football not as much) so thats the only time I will get really heartbroken if my team loses (though the giants in 01 came close)

Yeah, that was a low point in the history of team logos in all of sports.

My teams are based off geography or whichever team I was pulling for when I outgrew my "I'm pulling for the champs" pahse.

College - UK

This is strictly georgraphy. Unless you grew up in the Louisville-Metro area, you were likey a Wildcat fan and I am no exception. Now that I'm a student at Louisville I want to cheer for them, but I've hated them for so long that it is nearly impossible.

Hockey - Colorado, Nashville

I became a fan of theirs the first time they won the Cup. I've stuck with them since then. I picked up Nashville as a favorite when they became the closest team to where I live. Head to head, Colorado trumps Nashville.

MLB - Atlanta, Cincinnati

TBS gave me exposure to the Braves, plus they won a lot in the early 90s, so I liked them. I all but gave up on baseball after the strike. On the rare occasion I do watch these days, I pull for the Reds because of geography. I'm actually going to my first MLB game in 12 years next Friday in Cincinnati.

Basketball - Portland Trail Blazers

I grew up during Rip City with Clyde, Terry Porter, Jerome Kersey, Buck Williams and my favorite, Kevin Duckworth. I continue to be a fan, even with all the current woes, and I'm a stringent believer that Paul Allen wont move us to Seattle. Also, the recent draft was pretty exciting.

Baseball - New York Yankees

This is my favorite team in all of sports. My dad grew up in New York, so we'd go visit grandma once a year, and everytime we'd go see Yankee games . When I decided they were my favorite team, I was something like 6 years old, so I had no idea of all the history - I just liked Don Mattingly's style. Since then my love for the team has grown more and more each year, especially since some of my friends have become bandwagon Red Sox fans.

NFL Football - Miami Dolphins

Its kind of tough growing up in a city with no real geographical loyalties. I decided the Buffalo Bills were my favorite team one day when I was walking through an airport with my dad and I decided that I liked their logo that I saw on someones jacket (again, I was like 6.) As I watched more football, I decided I didn't really like the Bills all that much, but I did like one of their division rivals, the Dolphins. I started paying really close attention right around the end of Marino's career and I've been a fan ever since.

NCAA Football - Oregon Ducks

It helps that I hate Oklahoma so much.
