The Man in Blak 0 Report post Posted July 16, 2007 I've already got the N64 original and I'm not really that fond of it in the first place, so no for me. However, it seems like Nintendo tolerates this crap because it makes everything they make look like platinum. Given the quality of the first-party lineup coming down the home stretch this year, they've done a fair job of mitigating the lackluster third-party support and given consumers some solid options for the near future. With the lead that they have in the market, one could argue that they can "afford" such complacency. The problem is that they shouldn't be mitigating anything; they really should be piling on with these first-party releases and putting a lot of pressure on the competition. If they continue to burn time leaning on first-party development and the VC (which has been the drizzling shits for a month running now), they allow Microsoft to capitalize on superior online play and start putting together more alternatives to the "casual gaming" mantra that Nintendo has been pushing. If they dare to let the frequency of major software releases trend downward, they'll run the risk of gamers having time to "breathe" and contemplate whether the Wii is a novelty machine or a legitimate gaming platform. AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted July 16, 2007 Any takers on Paper Mario for the VC? Pass. OG cart owner here, but 10 bucks is well worth it. But TTYD is much better.
World's Worst Man 0 Report post Posted July 16, 2007 I was originally going to get it, but after playing the GameCube version, and to a lesser extent the Wii version, I don't think the series is really that good.
DrVenkman PhD 0 Report post Posted July 17, 2007 I didn't get it either but I almost did. Then I remembered not liking it all that much (though I love SPM).
At Home 0 Report post Posted July 17, 2007 I rented the N64 paper mario one. It was alright. The Gamecube one was just too goddamned strung out and cheesy. The Wii version looks slightly cooler because it focuses a little more in the innovations and shit, but it still looks kind of dumb. I have still yet to determine which N64 game i'd like to see come to the VC. Probably pokemon snap because that would be AWESOME. that looks fucking awesome. Just came across two games that I'm really really fucking excited for: Jenga and FUCKING KATAMARI BEAUTIFUL
muzz 0 Report post Posted July 18, 2007 Looks like a Grease Gun. Cool. I can finally see other people's Wii's in my address book now. Not sure how it was fixed, but I'm guessing it was our firewall and intrusion prevention.
World's Worst Man 0 Report post Posted July 18, 2007 I just can't believe they're charging $20 for it, whether it comes with a flash game or not. But I also don't see any benefit to using the accessory over the plain old wiimote and nunchuk. Just the vanilla controller itself is such a great way to play shooting games. Does it? I was under the impression that both were just pieces of plastic without any electronic circuitry inside. Toss me a link if it's true. here's a funny thing that happened to be today, i was vacuming after spilling cracker crumbs, next thing i know i hear this weird noise and i look down and see the wire on the Sensor Bar severed, so i need to get a new Sensor Bar laugh.gif Yea, that flimsy wire sucks. I went back and re-watched the segment of G4's E3 coverage with Reggie talking about the wheel, and I think that the trigger on the backside of the wheel just allows you to use the trigger on the underside of the remote for powerslides. I thought when I first saw it that it was a a completely seperate button, but Im looking at it now and where its placed and I think that its not now..oh well. oops. World's Worst Man 0 Report post Posted July 18, 2007 Ah. I think the wheel is coming bundled with Mario Kart anyway, so it's not a bad idea. I'll probably use it too, because it seems like it'd be an improvement over steering with a vanilla wiimote.
At Home 0 Report post Posted July 18, 2007 Can someone post a picture of the steering wheel, or at least a link to it? Mario Kart has online capabilities. Yes. Also, what's the deal with the online capabilities? Do you have to pay or does it just use the wireless webbernet that's already set up.
At Home 0 Report post Posted July 18, 2007 I'm watching the E3 presentation right now. Resident Evil: UC - Awesome Ghost Squad - Awesome Dragon Quest - Eh, looks interesting Soul Caliber Legends - Looks shitty, probably end up buying it. Metroid Prime 3 - Awesome Zelda: Phantom Hourglas - Stupid, hokey. Guitar Hero 3 - Holy Fucking Shit Mario Kart Wii - fap fap fap fap Wii Wheel - Eh. Could be cool. I would prefer that over the controller. Hopefully it will be like driving and not like using a controller. Super Mario Galaxy - Looks great. Will definitely pick this one up. Might not be on the launch day, but sometime after. Wii Fit - GFY, Nintendo. You sell video games. "Can this thing grow?" Reggie Fils-Aime.
Angles Broken Fricken Neck 0 Report post Posted July 18, 2007 Also, what's the deal with the online capabilities? Do you have to pay or does it just use the wireless webbernet that's already set up. its free but you need friend codes to play people. Basicly if i wanted to play against you, i would need your "friend code" and you would need mine
AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted July 18, 2007 Also, there's nothing really worth paying for anyway. Remembering and passing along friend codes is annoying, and *both* folks must add each other, no games currently offer any really satisfying online multiplayer except for Strikers, it appears, and few 3rd parties are using it since Nintendo was withholding the tools to get online games working. While it's still unknown when Manhunt 2 will actually come out, R*/Take Two has something else in the pipeline... BUTT 0 Report post Posted July 18, 2007 http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/18/joystiq-...ur-legends-wii/ Soulcalibur Legends is an affront to the games industry. The horrendous gameplay and horrible graphics not only shame the Wii as a platform, but lowers the reputation of a remarkable franchise. Wii fans should be appalled at Namco's clear lack of concern with the title, and should expect more. Graphically speaking, Legends is nothing short of unacceptable. If the game could even remotely look like Soulcalibur 2 on Gamecube, we'd be, at the very least, satiated. Instead, what we saw were blocky recreations of our Soulcalibur favorites trapped in boring, poorly textured environments that make the Dreamcast original look like a modern technical achievement. There is absolutely nothing to praise about the visuals in Legends: the art is generic, and the characters are stiff and lifeless. The screenshots that have been released are poor representations on how this game really looks. The gameplay doesn't fare any better. Legends is a mindless hack and slash with poor controls. Enemies stand around, dumbfounded, as you hack away at them by shaking the Wiimote. The combat is imprecise, and simply not fun. We did appreciate the dodge: shaking the Nunchuck will allow players to make a quick dash. There was no challenge, nor depth to the battles. Ultimately, each encounter was reduced to wild waggle sessions. Wii owners deserve a lot better than this -- Namco, we'd point to Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess as an example on how to properly implement sword attacks in an adventure game (and please learn how to create a proper lock-on!). If we had to give an award for most underwhelming disappointment of the show, Soulcalibur Legends is an easy candidate. Unless this game goes under a serious redesign, don't expect the first Soulcalibur game on Wii to be anything more than a complete disaster. So there! AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted July 18, 2007 Fortunately for Namco, the game will still mistakenly be attributed to the Death By Degrees team, I'm sure. And this is why so many Wii owners shit all over this game's announcement; because suckage was basically guaranteed. Namco really wants you to buy a PS3. At Home 0 Report post Posted July 18, 2007 I just watched the trailer for SCL. It looks alright. There are legitimate boss levels. Character models for enemies look pretty terrible and generic. I'm mixed about this. It seems like it would be my kind of game.... but I don't know.
World's Worst Man 0 Report post Posted July 18, 2007 Maybe they have time to fix those problems, but it seems rather unlikely that it'll magically turn into a high quality game. High-paced action games on the Wii may never turn out so well, just due to the utter tedium in having to flick the wiimote over and over again. The Dragon Quest Swords game looks much more moderately paced and looks to put the wiimote to good use. My only question about that game is the difficulty, because it's looked rather easy in all the videos I've seen.

At Home 0 Report post Posted July 18, 2007 Also, joystiq seems to be a notorious wii-basher. They stomped all over MP:3 for its graphics.
World's Worst Man 0 Report post Posted July 18, 2007 Joystig has Wii-bashers, Nintendo fanboys, Sony bashers, Sony fanboys, etc. Lots of different people blog there. I don't really pay attention to who writes the articles though, so I can't say I know who's who
At Home 0 Report post Posted July 18, 2007 Fair enough. I generally just go to Gamespot. They win game site of the year all the time, have a comprehensive video service, unbiased and thorough reviews, and other good features. From Gamespot: Fans of the Soul Calibur series of fighting games will likely be glad that publisher Namco Bandai is finally giving the series its due. In addition to the upcoming fourth installment in the core fighting franchise, the Wii will see its own Soul Calibur game--though this one is a third-person hack-and-slash adventure called Soulcalibur Legends. The game will primarily focus on Siegfried, before he was corrupted by the legendary malevolent blade and became Nightmare. Of course, plenty of other favorites from the original fighting games will be in here too. The demo on display at Namco Bandai's E3 suite today was the same one featured at the company's San Francisco press event last month, only this time company reps were glad to let us play it ourselves. The controls in Legends are pretty easy to get into, by Wii standards. You move around with the Nunchuk analog stick, and you can do two basic attacks by slashing the remote vertically or horizontally. Slashing multiple times will make you perform basic attacks, of course. The game offers a useful lock-on feature that seemed to target new enemies as soon as they entered the area, and we could switch to other targets by tapping the A button. Jerking the Nunchuk to the side allowed us to do a dash maneuver, and we could hit the C button to do a charge-up move that would allow for more powerful melee attacks when timed properly with the basic Wii Remote slash moves. Finally, we were able to instantly switch between our two playable characters--Siegfried with his massive Teutonic blade, and Mitsurugi, the more agile Japanese warrior armed with a katana--by hitting the C and Z buttons simultaneously. We got a feel for these controls quite easily, and subsequently hacked and slashed our way through lizard men and other unsightly foes in a generic temple environment before taking on an Egyptian-themed boss character which looked somewhat like a flying sarcophagus. Dispatching the boss was a simple matter of waiting for it to finish its multidirectional flame attack and then open up briefly so we could damage it. The demo ended there, so we didn't get a large sample of Soulcalibur Legends--but thankfully, a Namco Bandai rep did confirm the presence of other classic, playable Soul Calibur characters--such as the buxom, whip-wielding Ivy--in the final game. World's Worst Man 0 Report post Posted July 18, 2007 Hopefully the Joystiq guy just got it completely wrong (as some tend to do), because I'd like the game to be good. http://www.gamevideos.com has a bunch of videos of the Dragon Quest Swords game. They're in the "recently added videos" section, added about 2-3 days ago.
AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted July 18, 2007 Game sites dedicated to reviewing games are really noncommittal on the quality of a title when previewing, generally. Joystiq is just a gaming blog, meaning they can and will express whatever opinion they really feel on a story or a title, even based on a playable demo. You're not going to hear statements like the ones in the joystiq article from a Gamespot editor, at least until a reviewable copy is in.
At Home 0 Report post Posted July 18, 2007 Unfortunately, Dragon Quest doesn't look like it will be actual wii-wagging sword play, just button play instead.
