ALDS: Detroit Tigers vs. New York Yankees

Recommended Posts

If it's anything like that time he went batshit crazy over someone accusing him of jinxing a perfect game, I want the transcript.

Apparently, Michael Kay is leading the lynch mob on YES right now.

Man, I wish I had YES.

I think Jeter just set a record for the most cliches in a losing statement ever. He's such a cocky prick.

What'd he say?

The gist of what Jeter said was that

"One loss doesn't hurt more than any other loss because it's a loss."

"Losing to this team doesn't hurt more than losing to any other team because we lost."

"It doesn't matter what things looked like on paper because you don't play games on paper, you play them on the field, and we lost on the field so it doesn't matter if we were better on paper."

"Why should you care if you won a division? No one plays for the division. You play for the championships and we didn't win a championship."

"It doesn't matter how much you lose by, because whether you lose 8 to 7 or 12 to 1 you still lost."

He basically dug deep into Sports Cliches 101 for every question, and almost looked at the people asking the questions like they were morons for asking if this loss or season was disappointing. Not once did he give the Tigers credit. As usual, the Yankees lost because they decided not to win. It was nice seeing El Capitan losing his cool though as his level of disgust and vocal volume increased with every question.

But, he's right. So what's the problem really. On paper, "OMG, best offense ever" was thrown around by the media. Well, it didn't mean anything. I can kinda see what you mean about his statements...but, they're all true. He should've given credit to the Tigers pitching, though. It was THAT, which shut them down.

Yanks haven't won a WS with a Republican in office since Eisenhower. Thank you Nixon, Ford, Reagan, Bush and Bush!

I'll keep that in mind when I vote in 2008.

It wasn't so much that he didn't give a real answer to any of the questions it was just the disgust he showed towards the reporters, whereas Posada and Rivera seemed to be genuinely hurt by the loss. Mo looked like he was on the verge of tears because he couldn't contribute. Posada was just dejected. Jeter's attitude was like, those fuckers didn't step up so I'm gonna go get my drink on and bang some bitches as soon as you idiots are through asking your stupid little questions. He's pretty much your typical sore loser who wouldn't even know how to be gracious in defeat.

It's the same thing as last year when the White Sox beat the Angels and everyone was writing about Ozzie and Podsednik being the driving forces behind it, ignoring the pitching staff pitching (I think) 3 straight complete games and letting up like, two runs.

Guest Felonies!

Yeah, and now look. Podsednik is getting run out of town. Not even Brian Anderson seems to be in as much jeopardy. Watch them sell the farm to bring Rowand back so he can run into walls. That's playing the game the right way.

I think the air-raid sirens are going to be going off in New York. Steinbrenner is about to nuke his team to bits and start over. It'll be like in Animal House..."TORRE...GONE! CASHMAN...GONE! K/E/A-ROD...GONE!"

Where's that C-pac quote when we need it?

I WANT TORRE FIRED, CASHMAN FIRED, KEVIN BROWN AND VASQUEZ HAVE GOT TO GO. THEY ARE BOTH GUTLESS PUSSIES. I WILL BE SMILING WHEN THAT STUPID RETARD IN TORRE FINALLY GETS FIRED. FUCK ALL OF YOU.

Congratulations to the Detroit Tigers and Jim Leyland. The Tigers are our daddies, and I'll be rooting for them against the A's.

What a terrible day to be a Yankee fan

First off, anyone calling for CASHMAN'S head is an idiot. This past offseason was the first time he was given total autonomy in building the team. Prior to now he was simply the negotiation guy and had to deal with constant meddling from The Boss and his Tampa "experts". They were the ones who pushed for Jaret Wright, they were the ones who wanted Sheff rather than Vlad Guerrero, they were the ones who didn't want Beltran when he was practically begging the Yankees to sign him. They were the ones who let Andy Pettite walk. A-Rod, Randy Johnson...those were no brainer acquisitions, and any Yankee "fan" who trys to retroactively spin those as bad deals is flat out full of shit. Pavano? Every team in baseball that needed a pitcher was after the guy. I didn't think he was a smart pickup, but that's just one strike against Cashman (and Steinbrenner and his people pushed hard for him).

What did Cashman do in his first season in (more or less) sole control of the team? Signed Johnny Damon. Signed Kyle Farnsworth, Mike Myers and Ron Villone. Traded for Bobby Abreu, Cory Lidle and Craig Wilson midseason (and gave up almost nothing in the process). DIDN'T trade Cano, Melky, Wang or any of the minor league prospects. We got mixed results from the relievers, but there simply wasn't a whole lot out there in that market this past offseason. As far as adressing the team's needs (a power pitcher and lefty arms) he did the best he could. All the other additions turned out about as well as could be expected. Would it have helped the team to acquire an impact reliever/starter at the trade deadline? Yes, but then everyone would have bitched when they had to give up Melky/Hughes/Clippard/Duncan to get it done.

I just don't get how anyone who actually follows the team could place the blame on Cashman.

My gut reaction is that it's time for Joe Torre to ride off into the sunset. This team has simply not gotten it done for him in recent years, and I think it's time for a new voice of leadership and a new approach. I also think he's been exposed when it comes to managing his bullpen without Mel Stottlemeyer around, and some of his lineup choices have been puzzling. Bring back Joe Girardi.

And my patience has officially worn thin with Alex Rodriguez. I defended him all season, I chastized Yankee Stadium crowds for booing him, but after another AWFUL postseason and after everything that was done and said by the media and Alex and other players, I just think he's become a divisive force on this team. Is there anyone out there that can match his numbers? No, but I'm starting to believe that his presence in the clubhouse is doing more harm than good, and that the Yankees can not win with him. I hate to throw this term around but he really is a cancer. The real question to me is who wants him? Who wants to pay that contract? Can the Yankees get ANYTHING worthwhile in return?

Sheffield? I'm a fan, but I don't want him back.

Randy Johnson? Please retire.

Bernie? I love ya Bernie, you deserved to go out on top, but it's time to retire.

Jaret Wright? For the LOVE OF GOD can we please pawn this guy off on someone?

Obviously the area in need of the biggest upgrade is pitching. The hope is that Clippard and/or Hughes can contribute next season, but rushing them is the last thing we need to do.

Possible free agent targets:

Andy Pettite

Greg Maddux

Gil Meche

Kerry Wood

Ted Lilly

It's not Cashman's fault but George can't fire George or any of the players so it's either him or Clueless Joe. Giving Joe the axe but not Cashman would cause a huge backlash because some Yankees fans still mistakenly think Torre's a great manager, or that he was a key component of their past success.

My gut says Cashman goes, Torre stays, the Yankees spend more money, win 100 games as well as the AL East, but come up short again in '07.

Torre WAS a major component of their past success, but it doesn't change the fact that he's lost his touch and misses guys like Mel and Zim.

The problem with firing Cashman is that it doesn't fix the problem. I don't profess to know what goes on in George's head, but he has to know that the blame falls on Torre and the players before Cashman. I won't rule out Cashman getting the axe as a "someone needs to pay, things are gonna change" move by George, but the wrong person would pay and nothing would change, and any astute Yankee observer would see that. Honestly, the "OMG FIRE/KILL EVERYONE" nutjobs aside, Cashman getting fired would get almost unanamous bad press in NY.
