The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning

Recommended Posts

Last night Fangoria magazine had an advanced screening of TCM: The Beginning. This was a very good movie. If you are into old-school grind-house horror then I would not pass this film up. The look of the film was amazing and the music used (original score) was very, very good. The film from beginning until end made me feel very uncomfortable. This is a don't miss!

I would give this film 2 1/2 stars out of 4 becasue it wasn't the greatest horror flm ever but it was damn entertaining.

Is it just me or are they hyping this new TCM movie more around Ermey as Sheriff Hoyt than Leatherface? Perhaps someone finally realized Leatherface is only as good as the crazy family members.

I would say the reason that they are showing a lot of Ermey is becasue he is the main character in this film. It is about how Tommy Hewitt becomes Leatherface, but it is mainly about Ermey's character.

Other than R. Lee, I see no reason for me to go see this. The only reason I got the first remake is it was five bucks, Jessica Biel's got a nice body and R. Lee is a damn god.

I saw this movie too and it's sitting on my shelf right now. I hear you can buy it in stores right now too.

Subtle, yet effective. :D

I would check it out, but I've got too much homework right now.

As lame as I'll probably end up thinking it is, my girlfriend and I haven't seen a horror flick on the big screen since Pulse, I think. So I do believe we'll be catching a Saturday afternoon viewing and I've fully prepared myself to part with $11.95 CAD and get nothing in return. :P

I liked the remake so I'll probably check this out. I like them taking the time to explain their version of how a classic horror villain came to be.

I saw this tonight myself. I hate hate hate hate HATED the 2003 remake. I thought it was just the most terrible unnecessary god awful piece of shit movie I've ever seen, and didn't see any redeeming value in it at all. That being said, I didn't hate this. I didn't really like it either, but at least it told a coherent story and delivered on the gore and violence. Catch this one in a Matinee if you HAVE to see it, otherwise, wait for the DVD.

I really liked the remake, infact I hated the original. I look forward to seeing this one though, R. Lee looks to be awesome, killing the entire police force and taking over as sheriff.

I didn't mind the remake. I was expecting much worse, but it wasn't so bad. You just can't compare it to the original.

Word.

The remake was a decent horror movie ... it paled in comparison to the original, but that was expected.

I'll probably check this one out at some point.

I find it interesting that "Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning" is opening the same day as Scorseses' "The Departed", as the original Chainsaw was featured in "Taxi Driver"

WARNING, for some of you some of this might include spoilers. That would only be the case if you are an absolute moron, but still, don't say I didn't warn you, just in case you are indeed an idiot.

I saw this tonight, and I didn't really care for it. I'm not going to get into a big thing over it all, so instead I'll just spout off a few quick thoughts:

-For one, and this isn't really a spoiler unless you're a complete twat, you never had a reason to cheer for any of the "good guys". If you see this movie, you've seen the one from a few years ago. You know that none of the bad guys will get killed, and you know that all of the good guys in the prequel will get killed off, period. There are a few times in the movie where they try to make you think otherwise, but come on, any asshole is smarter than to fall for any of that.

-Because of the above, in order for a prequel to really be effective it needs plenty of nods to the film(s) that came before it. Sure, there are a few things here and there, but not nearly enough to really mean too much for anyone if you ask me.

-So with that, we're left with the brutal killings to take up the screen time and to be the focus of the flick, and sadly they just didn't deliver in my opinion. To sum it up, you've already seen this movie, more than once. There isn't anything new to see here at all.

-Maybe this is a pointless complaint, and I had this same complaint with the TCM remake. Is it just me, or do they just do a shit job at presenting the years in which the films are based? Even the flashback in this one to 193whatever didn't feel different. It's like both of these movies could be based in 2006 and you'd never know it. Am I just picky? That really gets to me for some reason.

-God bless R. Lee Ermey. If there is a reason for any of you guys to check it out, then look no further. I especially loved two of his lines -

"That's not her? You don't want to see the other girl..."

and

"YOU BLASPHEMOUS BITCH!"

If he wasn't in this film, I wouldn't have really cared for it all that much at all. I liked him in this flick enough to recommend it to anyone who is a fan of him.

If you guys want to see some mindless uninventive killing with no real rhyme or reason to it, as well with some great moments from R. Lee Ermey, then go for it and check it out. Watch this movie made me feel a little uncomfortable also, and I'm not really even sure why. Maybe because you never had a chance to care for the victims, and you knew for a fact what the fate of everyone involved would be? Even that would have been fine had they decided to do a bit more character development with all involved, and gave you a reason to just care for them as people, and to care for their relationships with one another, but sadly they didn't even provide that much for the audience to hold on to.

I didn't hate it, and I could see myself watching it again in the future when I'm looking for something else to stick in my horror routine around Halloween maybe, but it isn't something I'll ever really care for. I'd give it a C- or so. I liked it better than shit like The Ring 2 and The Grudge, for what it's worth.

Also, I think it's a safe bet that we're in store for at least one or two new TCM movies. Unless I'm totally mistaken, they have at least three or four years between this flick and the old on, in terms of the actual timeline.

THis was definatly R. Lee's movie. How he didn't get top billing I will not know. He simply WAS THE MOVIE.

Decient movie, but The last two chainsaw deaths were great

My bro and I went yesterday. Actually got IDed. Haven't done that in awhile for a movie.

I guess I've gotten desensitized over the years. Nothing in the movie really got me.

That said, I do appreciate the remake and this prequel for the Sheriff Hoyt character. Leatherface is still Leatherface. It was worth an afternoon to get a dose of those two.

I thought it was 10x better than the previous remake in terms of "horror violence" and gore. The killings in the 2003 remake were just lame, and at least these ones had some actual gore to them.

So I saw it last night and it didn't live up to my expectations. Very disappointed with this film. I was expecting a true horror origins film and I wound up seeing a remake of the remake instead.

A true horror origins film? I don't know what more you could've wanted out of it.

Well, it would have been nice if they went deeper into his past while he was growing up. How he got teased, stuff like that. I wanted more detail in his backstory rather than the lame still frames shown at the beginning along with him just picking up the chainsaw. That's what I wanted to see, not a remake of the remake.

There was no need for "Leatherface growing up" in the film. The "Beginning" was to signify how the FAMILY began their killing spree, not just Leatherface.

...and if it was a remake of the remake, then they succeeded. The first remake was ass - and this one kicked all kinds of ass what with it's ACTUAL kill scenes and gore.
