I know the portrayals of Kazakhstan were exagerrated, but I just wonder how much they really are. I mean thoughts like "the Jews caused 9/11" aren't exactly foreign to the Middle East and Central Asia.

"British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen's controversial new comedy movie has been cut from more than half the 2,000 US cinemas it was supposed to debut in this weekend over fears film fans won't get the comic's Borat character. In the film, Borat: Cultural Learnings Of America For Make Great Benefit Glorious Nation Of Kazakhstan, Cohen plays an offensive Kazakhstan TV journalist trying to get to grips with life in America. The movie has already upset politicians in Kazakhstan, who insist the comedian's character paints a terrible picture of their country, and now film distributors in the US fear cinemagoers will find the movie more offensive than funny. The film was scheduled to open in 2,000 cinemas across America on Friday, but it will now bow in only 700. Movie executives at Twentieth Century Fox pulled the plug on the wide opening after the film tested poorly. Distribution official Bruce Snyder tells the Los Angeles Times newspaper, "Our research showed it was soft in awareness." Fox bosses hope to add cinemas a week after the film opens."

 

 

 

 

Whoever made this decision at Fox should lose thier job immedietly. Only 837 theatres are showing the movie. Guess Fox did not want to take in 40 mil based on test screenings. Idiots.

 

Actually, it was a smart move considering the early buzz that had been propigating the web and word of mouth had been cooling in the 2 or 3 weeks leading into the open. Fox, seeing this and not wanting to suffer the same fate that New Line did with Snakes on a Plane, made the calculated decision to scale it back which generated a good chunk of press, which reinvigorated the buzz and got people to flock to see this movie. It's a simple advertising principle by creating demand you will generate profit.

 

As for my prediction from earlier, I stand corrected. I think had this lineup bowed on Thanksgiving weekend, my predictions would have been more accurate. I do still think Universal overpaid for the rights to Bruno.

Question about Borat the movie. Is it really any funnier than the Ali G show? Because I never watched it before about a week ago, but I set the whole marathon to record when HBO showed it, and now I'm thinking I don't really need to see Borat, because I've got all these episodes lined up already.

One of the more uncomfortable scenes, IMO, was when Borat is in the RV with the college guys and the one guy is going off about how "the Jews and minorities run everything here too".

 

That scene brought down nearly everyone in my audience. I don't think any other part received as much silence.

Yeah, that was the same reaction when I saw it. It was like "Oh, wait, he's making fun of us too", but it fit with the movie, I suppose.

I thought the rodeo scence would have made pepole realize the film was in part a satire of America. I was the only person around me who laughed at the frat kids statement. I also think I was sitting next to a few Jews, they had a weird vibe whenever there was a Jew joke.

Just got back from seeing this film today. My friend and I loved this film. I thought it was very, very funny. I don't think however, like some of the reviews have said., that this is the funniest movie ever. I thought it was very funny, but it also had some moments that made it seem like the film was dragging. I would have given this film 3 out of 4 stars.

Humiliated frat boys sue 'Borat' 46 minutes ago

 

 

SANTA MONICA, Calif. - Two fraternity boys want to make lawsuit against "Borat" over their drunken appearance in the hit movie.

 

The legal action filed Thursday on their behalf claims they were duped into appearing in the spoof documentary "Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan," in which they made racist and sexist comments on camera.

 

The young men "engaged in behavior that they otherwise would not have engaged in," the lawsuit says.

 

"Borat" follows the adventures of comedian Sacha Baron Cohen's Kazakh journalist character in a blend of fiction and improvised comic encounters as he travels across the United States and mocks Americans.

 

The plaintiffs were not named in the lawsuit "to protect themselves from any additional and unnecessary embarrassment." They were identified in the movie as fraternity members from a South Carolina university, and appeared drunk as they made insulting comments about women and minorities to Cohen's character.

 

The lawsuit claims that in October 2005, a production crew took the students to a bar to drink and "loosen up" before participating in what they were told would be a documentary to be shown outside of the United States.

 

"They were induced to agree to participate and were told the name of the fraternity and the name of their school wouldn't be used," said the plaintiffs' attorney, Olivier Taillieu. "They were put into an RV and were made to believe they were picking up Borat the hitchhiker."

 

After a bout of heavy drinking, the plaintiffs signed a release form they were told "had something to do with reliability issues with being in the RV," Taillieu said.

 

The film "made plaintiffs the object of ridicule, humiliation, mental anguish and emotional and physical distress, loss of reputation, goodwill and standing in the community," the lawsuit said.

 

It names 20th Century Fox, a unit of News Corp., and three production companies as defendants.

 

Studio spokesman Gregg Brilliant said the lawsuit "has no merit."

 

The plaintiffs were seeking an injunction to stop the studio from displaying their image and likeness, along with unspecified monetary damages.

 

"Borat" debuted as the top movie last weekend with $26.5 million.
