That last season was really, really spotty. I disagree. The first season had some clunkers, but the second and third season were perfect I don't get that line of thinking at all. Overall, I like season two more now than when I first watched it, but season three still falls flat, mostly. The Rita story arc spent five episodes—and exhausted itself in two—to build to a joke over what "MR F" stood for. Groan. Plus, "Making a Stand" was easily the worst episode in the show's entire run. The BBC version is a great series, but the American version has passed it They didn't "steal" from the BBC version, they bought the rights. They intended to use some of the stuff. The American version is way better than the English version. way better? you've all been inundated with bullshit. completely. steve carrell while fine, is nowhere near as painfully obnoxious, discriminatory, or preposturous as ricky gervais. what made the uk office great was the subtle jokes that made the viewer wince & laugh instead of just saying stupid things over & over. there is only one basis for the carrell character and its gervais. after watching gervais, carrell looks like a weak retread. the character was designed for gervais, the show is designed for more progressive uk audiences, and the nbc gig is just watered down garbage. Sideburnious 0 Report post Posted November 23, 2006 Yeah, but everything about the office Gervais stole from other people. The character, the concept. All he is is a one trick pony, from looking at Extras or anything else he's ever done (Flanimals, his shitty stand ups). Gervais' routine "I'll do a Hugh Grant bumbling idiot and just mummer till I've finished talking, then ill attack minorities/the disabled. And I'll do this for series at a time, over different shows. God bless Steve Coogan for giving me a character to steal, and other show makers for giving me the Paper Office mocumentary style to have a show"
Annabelle 0 Report post Posted November 23, 2006 ever seen an interview with gervais in real life? he is david brent. to even say he is a bumbling hugh grant proves your american ignorance. the only thing he & hugh grant have in common is they're british. oh, you referenced steve coogan, too. its like plagarism! saying that steve carrell stole his act from ben affleck because they have the same accent. carrell is a bumbling idiot in the spirit of ben affleck, y'all. Well, my comparison with hugh Grant was the fact that he does that bumbling englishman routine for most of his speech as in: he says something stupid, he realises it, he mumbles until he stops talking. Why not compare him to any Englishman? And yeah I mentioned Steve Coogan, Gervais practically stole his Alan Partridge character. The difference is that Coogan has depth and can do many different characters. As you pointed out, Gervais is David Brent, who is his character in Extras, who is the character he played on his MTV:UK advertisments before the office, which is the same as his Stand Up personna, which is the same as him narrating Flanimals. Annabelle 0 Report post Posted November 23, 2006 this is so asinine. who cares that gervais played the similar david brent character on any other show. its the fact that the character is HIS & that steve carrells character is based on HIS creation. what aren't you understanding? and apparently every englishman mumbles. that's essentially what you're saying, right? thats why david brent & his bumbling persona is comparable to ANY englishman. the us version is almost completely based off of the uk version. saying that it is better than its creation is like saying that the t.v. version of parenthood is better than the movie. americans are just lazy. this show is lazy. where's the heart? can't think of anything so pay a buttload of dough to merchand & gervais for its rights. everything is the same & dumbed down for you assholes. and its painful. but americans will like it better than the uk version because of the "bumbling british accents". fucking morons. go watch 2 & a half men, you ferries. Mystery Eskimo 0 Report post Posted November 24, 2006 ever seen an interview with gervais in real life? he is david brent. No, he really isn't. Gervais has a fairly limited range of characters and humour, but this doesn't mean he IS his character. I have no idea why anyone would want to lose their temper over which version is best, given they're based on the same type of humour and both are extremely funny. MarvinisaLunatic 0 Report post Posted November 24, 2006 You know that the Office is in HD Marv. You probably saw it in SD so you didn't like it. I am really beginning to hate Marv. I see 30 seconds of it in HD everytime I tivo My Name is Earl cause NBC runs their shows early. And HD really isnt the main factor for me liking AD now after hatingt he first 2 eps when I saw them when they aired, but after watching the entire S1 marathon today from 9am-8pm it was obvious that the show didnt get going til around 1pm which was like 8 shows in.. Sideburnious 0 Report post Posted November 24, 2006 Banky, you should check out "I'm Alan Partridge". You'll see how a proper inappropriate asshole character is done. EDIT: and apparently every englishman mumbles. that's essentially what you're saying, right? thats why david brent & his bumbling persona is comparable to ANY englishman. No, you missed my point. I was specifically comparing him to huge grant. My "Why not compare him to any Englishman?" was a rhetorical question. I was comparing him to Hugh Grant because they both do the bumbling englishman thing. The "why not etc" part was saying why didn't I just throw in Richard E. Grant, just because they are both English.

EricMM 0 Report post Posted November 24, 2006 Family Guy differs from the Simpsons in that, at one point, the Simpsons were not made up of 100% hideously repetitive pop culture references. Seriously, the last ep I saw had something like four "this is almost as ____ as the the time I _____" (cut to random ass 80's tv show / movie / song / etc.)
