Nas - Hip Hop Is Dead

Recommended Posts

It leaked a whole 2 weeks early and I must say, it is easily rap album of the year. It's on point from top to bottom with Nas rapping tighter and fresher than he has in ages. It's his first attempt at a concept album and he pulls it off admirably going through the death, the rebirth and the hope for the future of hip hop. Plus hearing Nas and Jay Z on a track together is still great eventhoug it's nowhere near the best track on the album.

Amazing CD, my favorite song on it is Money Over Bullshit. I'm going to pick it up when it comes out no doubt.

Just when I thought Game had album of the year locked up.

I must say I liked the Game and Nas song better then the Jay Z and Nas one.

I like Can't Forget About You and Let There Be Light best. The Nat King Cole addition to Can't Forget About You is brilliant.

And I agree, I like the Game song better than the Jay one. Black Republicans is in the bottom half of the album for quality I'd say.

If that link goes down I'll put a new one up tomorrow afternoon.

I'm loving it so far. Only one or two tracks that I'm not really into but I'll give them time.

Really disappointed that they used the edited version of the track "Hip Hop is Dead" - just shows how much censorship there is in the industry. The original chorus was "If Hip Hop should die before I wake, I'll put an extended clip inside of my AK, roll to every station murder the DJ".. they replaced that with "I'll put in an extended clip and body 'em all day, roll to every station, wreck the DJ".

"Who Killed It" when he's talking in an accent like an old school gangster probably won't appeal to the masses, but that is some pretty brilliant storytelling.

I think NATAS has album of the year on lockdown for me. But this cd should be better than other mainstream trash I heard this year (Clipse, Jay-Z).

great cover art too.

I've only heard Hip Hop is Dead and Black Republicans. If those songs are in the bottom half in terms of quality, I can't wait to get this CD.

excuse me? mainstream trash ---> clipse?

theres nothing mainstream or formulaic about the clipse album. nothing. except maybe that the neptunes produced. but there production was inspired equally by underground house djs and hip hop.

and what is natas?

Better than Lupe Fiasco's Food & Liquor?

I think so... I thought Food & Liquor was overrated. I like Lupe, but this album doesn't really have no replay value to me. I like the Docter's Advocate and Hip Hop is Dead more.

Oh and Young Jeezy - The Inspiration actually suprised me, I didn't mind the CD that much. The production was bangin.

If you knew who they were, you'd know that his statement voids any credibility on what he considers to be trash.

They are on the radio. It doesn't matter who inspired them.

NATAS is a rap group that consists of Esham, TNT and Mastamind. They are from Detroit and are considered Horrorcore or Acid Rap.

If you knew who they were, you'd know that his statement voids any credibility on what he considers to be trash.

Although you might be right, you probably don't know who they are either.

Hip Hop Is Dead is bottom half. Black Republican's, from what I've read, is either being hailed as a classic or as a huge disappointment. Very split views on it.

I don't see how people can hate on them really, it's not like they're gimmicky and retarded like ICP.

They are pretty much straight up rap, no bullshit. but....ya like what ya like.

i dunno if im as sold as everyone else on this album. i'll forever love nas, and do enjoy this, but its not an album of the year candidate. nas is sorta stuck in a holding pattern. he just does what he does. he doesn't push the boundaries. which is ironic because thats what makes hip hop dead. also, a petulant concept album and title.

You don't think a song like "Who Killed It?" is pushing the boundries?

I think this is a lot different from Street's Disciple. The beats on this one are a lot more jazz influenced and the tempo as a whole is much more mellow.

I'm guessing that's cause a DJ in NY was just killed either yesterday or the day before that. He was a DJ on Power 105.

December 8, 2006 -- A late-night DJ for hip-hop station Power 105.1 was gravely wounded in a hail of bullets yesterday in what may have been a robbery, police sources said.

DJ Carl Blaze, whose real name is Carlos Rivera, was shot at least13 times while in the first-floor hallway of 578 Academy St. in Manhattan's Inwood section at about 4:30 a.m., cops said.

"He just said, 'I'm hurt, I'm hurt, I'm gonna die, I'm gonna die,' " said building resident Elizabeth Figueroa. "So I pulled up his shirt to check the wounds because he was bleeding a lot - profusely."

The father of two young sons was clinging to life last night at Harlem Hospital, surrounded by dozens of friends and family.

When Rivera, 30, was found, he was missing a large gold and diamond chain with the letters "CB" on it, which was worth $20,000.

Police sources said robbery may have been the motive for the shooting, but they had no suspects.

Cops were also looking into Rivera's personal life to see if there may have been any simmering romantic or financial hostilities - considering how many times he was shot - said sources close to the investigation.

Rivera had just come from spinning records at the X-Bar in The Bronx, but it was unclear what the Elmwood Park, N.J., resident was doing in upper Manhattan.

"Everybody's pulling for him," his longtime friend and booking agent Rich Dominguez told The Post. "He's really a nice guy, that's why everybody's pretty surprised to find out that he's even in a situation like this."

He said it wasn't surprising Rivera was on Academy Street because he grew up in nearby Washington Heights.

Dominguez said despite the fact that Rivera hung out in some tough clubs and moved in hip-hop circles, "he's no gangster."

"Carl Blaze is definitely one of those type of guys that would definitely reach out and help people out. Definitely a caring type of dude, real down the earth," said Dominguez.

" He's never felt the need to have extra security or put those type of barriers between him and his fans."

Power 105.1 announced the shooting over the air, and "listeners have been calling in with their love and support and prayers," said station spokeswoman Josefa Paganuzzi.

She said station officials would release a statement when they knew more and had spoken to Rivera's family.

did you listen to the clipse album? did you? or are you brazenly critisising something you don't know anything about?

and who killed it is the worst song on the nas album. and sure, i'll admit it, that one does push the boundaries. it shows that nas should just do what he does best.

Hell Hath No Fury? No. BUT, judging off of the rest of the neptunes work, they are the definition of mainstream.
