Star Ocean 3 Posted December 11, 2006 Report Posted December 11, 2006 In my day there were at least five, maybe even six comic strips worth reading. We had it good. Now it's either terrible political and social commentary vaguely disguised as humor (Candorville? La Cucaracha?), or third-rate wacky hijinks. Oh, TAG. And I used to like this strip. It lookedat first like a fresh and new type of humor, but the insistence on reminding us that it's a comic strip, and association with another bad comic, Get Fuzzy, led it to suck. The only new comic I've seen that is bearable is Frazz, which is usually smart, but unfortunately sometimes pretentious. O what has happened to the newspaper comic strip?
k thx Posted December 11, 2006 Report Posted December 11, 2006 I was going to make a TSM comic thread for the wacky exploits of this board. Fine way to ruin that idea Star Ocean 3...
Spaceman Spiff Posted December 11, 2006 Report Posted December 11, 2006 What happened? Watterson, Larson, and Breathed retired (although Breathed came back a couple times, though not as good as Bloom County). More recently, McGruder stopped doing comic strip Boondocks in favor of the animated version. And, in an even worse development, Foxtrot is going to become Sunday-only at the end of the year.
Gary Floyd Posted December 11, 2006 Report Posted December 11, 2006 Woah, Foxtrot's only going to be Sundays? That sucks. That reminds me, will "For Better or for Worse" ever end, because that thing has always sucked.
Spaceman Spiff Posted December 11, 2006 Report Posted December 11, 2006 http://www.amuniversal.com/ups/newsrelease/?view=468 Kansas City, MO (12/05/2006) Bill Amend’s popular FoxTrot comic strip will go to a Sunday-only publication schedule as of Dec. 31, 2006, announced Universal Press Syndicate today. The last daily will be Saturday, Dec. 30. Reruns of dailies will be available for Web usage. “After spending close to half of my life writing and drawing FoxTrot cartoons, I think it’s time I got out of the house and tried some new things,” said Amend. “I love cartooning and I absolutely want to continue doing the strip, just not at the current all-consuming pace. I’ve been blessed over the years with a terrific syndicate, patient newspaper clients, and more support from readers than I probably deserve, and I want to assure them all that while I’ll be now a less-frequent participant on the comics pages, I’ll continue to treat my visits as the special privilege they are.” Amend, who started the strip in April, 1988, and who has more than 1,000 client newspapers, is taking time to pursue other creative outlets. “In addition to Sunday newspapers, we may see FoxTrot entertaining us in other kinds of media platforms,” says Lee Salem, president and editor of Universal Press Syndicate. Amend has more than 30 published FoxTrot comic collections and has licensed his characters for calendars and wallpapers for cell phones. He was nominated in 2006 as a finalist for cartoonist of the year by the National Cartoonists Society’s Reuben Award.
kkktookmybabyaway Posted December 11, 2006 Report Posted December 11, 2006 For me the funny pages are in the "Opinion" section of a newspaper. Or maybe the section talking about local arrests.
Gary Floyd Posted December 11, 2006 Report Posted December 11, 2006 This is pretty cool, Peanuts characters as Marvel Comics characters
Vampiro69 Posted December 11, 2006 Report Posted December 11, 2006 This is pretty cool, Peanuts characters as Marvel Comics characters Some of those are great.
Guest CWMwasmurdered Posted December 11, 2006 Report Posted December 11, 2006 pearls and Get Fuzzy are both funny.
MarvinisaLunatic Posted December 11, 2006 Report Posted December 11, 2006 A Foxtrot cartoon would be..very interesting. But only on sundays sucks. I Still read garfield every day, and Grizwells is probably #3 behind Garfield and Foxtrot for me for currently published comics.
Ted the Poster Posted December 11, 2006 Report Posted December 11, 2006 Garfield has been terrible for ten years. Pearls and Get Fuzzy are the only consistently good strips nowadays.
Vampiro69 Posted December 11, 2006 Report Posted December 11, 2006 I still get a laugh out of Dilbert, and I still like to read the Peanuts strip.
Matt Young Posted December 12, 2006 Report Posted December 12, 2006 Zits is still pretty good, and I have a soft spot for Beetle Bailey.
Vampiro69 Posted December 12, 2006 Report Posted December 12, 2006 Man, I forgot about Bettle Bailey. Miss Buxley is still hot after all these years.
... Posted December 12, 2006 Report Posted December 12, 2006 Is "Non Sequitur" still going? I believe I read somewhere that "For Better Or Worse" was going to end because the creator was losing her eyesight, but here we are five odd years later and no thermonuclear holocaust storyline.
Ted the Poster Posted December 12, 2006 Report Posted December 12, 2006 Non-Sequitur is still going, yes. One of the better strips out there.
Ravenbomb Posted December 12, 2006 Report Posted December 12, 2006 The only comic I ever really followed was Calvin and Hobbes, and now that I've got the complete collection I don't need to bother with the comics anymore
PUT THAT DICK IN MY MOUTH! Posted December 12, 2006 Report Posted December 12, 2006 I read Mallard Fillmore every day. Bruce Tinsley always tells it like it is and really sticks it to those ivory tower liberal elites.
Guest "Go, Mordecai!" Posted December 12, 2006 Report Posted December 12, 2006 Die for just so much as mentioning Mallard Fillmore.
randomguy Posted December 12, 2006 Report Posted December 12, 2006 LOL Mallard Fillmore. Perfect example of 99% pretension, 1% funny. I like FoxTrot, I've always appreciated how the creator actually knows something about modern society and kids. Like the nerdy one will get some video game system and talk about it in a way that actually makes sense.
