Maztinho 0 Report post Posted August 9, 2008 My computer decided it doesn't want to make sound anymore. Nothing on-line makes noise, and I can't listen to any songs I have on my hard drive. Is this a sound card issue? I'm a total failure with anything beyond turning this damn thing on and surfing the Net. And playing video games. So trying to play my musical video game last night was sad. It's done something like this before and then a day later it decided to work normally again. So that might happen, but I doubt lightening strikes twice.
Guest Vitamin X Report post Posted August 10, 2008 It's almost certainly a sound card issue. Is there anything else you're noticing that's messed up? And when you say on-line, do you mean like anything from youtube and the like, or is your computer still making its beeps and whirs when you turn it on? The latter would indicate there's something that may be silencing the sound from within the BIOS, which wouldn't be a sound card issue and might need a bit of techie tweaking, but I'm pretty sure it'd be a sound card thing. You can get a new one for relatively cheap. Also, check your speakers and make sure they're plugged in right. I know, I know, common sense, but even if you're sure, unplug them and plug them back in. I thought I had the same problem (and it also did something where it did that and then started working again) and it was pretty much a speaker/speaker wire connection problem. If you have an extra pair of speakers hanging around, try plugging those in and see if it works, if it doesn't then you know it's a sound card issue for sure. Yeah, turns out my cousin was dicking around with my headphones and had them in the wrong jack. That's what I get for trying to figure shit out with no lights on. Mike wanna be 0 Report post Posted August 23, 2008 Dumbassed question, but I noticed a USB port on the back of my DVR what the hell is it for? It's kinda like the expansion ports on Nintendo consoles; useless without "future upgrades" that may or may not exist/make it to market.

Sometimes those ports are used by engineers to do diagnostics and whatnot as well, I believe.
CanadianGuitarist 0 Report post Posted August 27, 2008 My dad just bought a Sanza MP3 player. It did not come with software. We plugged it into the USB, but no "add new hardware" wizard popped up. Under the sync tab, Media Player yielded nothing, as if nothing was plugged in. I also looked through "add new hardware" via the control panel. It auto-searched to no avail, and under the list of types of hardware to add, nothing quite did fit the bill. "Mass USB storage device" was close, but before I try that, here's what's confuzzling about it the most: He was at my place earlier in the day to take some music off my computer. We plugged it in the USB and the "new hardware" wizard instantly recognised it. The only thing I can think of is that my dad's PC is USB 1.1 opposed to 2, but I'm not sure if that would be a reason, or if it would apply anyway. Thoughts? Maztinho 0 Report post Posted August 27, 2008 With the Firefox upgrade I now have something called Antivirus XP 2008 that keeps popping up and saying I have a fuckton of viruses, but CA Security ran a scan and cleaned everything for me (I did have one, which I think this fucking Antivirus brought along with it), but I can't get rid of this Antivirus XP which is causing pop ups every freaking ten minutes, and resets my wallpaper to some fucking warning thing. When I try to remove it manually it says error and wants me to send a report. I want this piece of shit off my computer because I have two antivirus programs already. My tech-head friend that usually helps me with this shit moved. I have AVG Anti-Spyware as well, and I've never had any problems until the Firefox update. Cran Da Maniac 0 Report post Posted August 27, 2008 That Antivirus XP 2008 has been popping up all over the place. It originally came from an email about CNN Top Ten List or something, and when you clicked a link it installed on your computer. The best thing I've seen get rid of it is on this site http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/malware-re...tivirus-xp-2008. After running these instructions, I'd suggest doing a virus scan in safe mode, just to be certain.
Maztinho 0 Report post Posted August 27, 2008 Ok I downloaded Smart Doctor from the link. Much thanks, but now it won't download the "Smart Update" to actually run the program. I'll try it again after my shift, as I'm just on a lunch break. I'll come back and bitch again if I can't get it working. Thanks again Cran da Man.
Skywarp! 0 Report post Posted August 27, 2008 I'm in the market for a new PC laptop. Could someone please tell me what is the suggested amount of RAM and memory for computing needs these days? I'm not a gamer, so my most massive non-Windows program would likely be iTunes. Is the Dual-Core the best Intel processor out there at the moment? Also, what do people like in terms of brand names? I notice Dell is having a nice sale at the moment, and HPs seem to work smoothly. Any input is appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Jaxxson Mayhem 0 Report post Posted August 28, 2008 Go with 3 gig of RAM so you'll be safe. Get a Core 2 Duo Centrino processor. It's the best processor out for laptops now.

Okay I got rid of the damn program, now Firefox is popping up with an error every so often. Which is less annoying than the Antivirus, but I want it gone as well. Mike wanna be 0 Report post Posted August 30, 2008 I had 1GB of RAM, and last night after I shut down I put in another 1GB; wake up today, boot it up, and BIOS & XP tell me I have 512MB installed. msinfo32 tells me I have 1024MB installed. I turn it off, switch the slots around and now I have 1.5GB installed according to System, but 3GB installed via msinfo32. Four different readings, all of them wrong. Either Microsoft sucks or the guy on ebay sent me a 512 instead of a 1024.
Prophet of Mike Zagurski 0 Report post Posted August 30, 2008 How much memory can you motherboard support and what type of RAM is it? I think DDR and DDR2 work optimally with same size and clock speed.
Mike wanna be 0 Report post Posted September 5, 2008 Yeah, turns out the new 1GB stick is fucked. Firefox was crashing on me every 5 minutes with it in, I took it out and I've run perfectly for 48 hours now. Serves me right for going with cheap eBay RAM. Prophet of Mike Zagurski 0 Report post Posted September 5, 2008 That reminds me of something. I've had bad RAM in the past and I used this program to diagnose bad sticks. One stick per run of the program that way you can isolate the bad stick. http://www.memtest86.com/
Exslade ZX 0 Report post Posted September 7, 2008 Alright, can someone tell me what the hells wrong with my font? A little while ago, my comp froze (Damn you Vista) and I had to shut it down manually, when I turned it back on, my internet font's screwed up. I thought it was just google chrome, for some reason everything appears italicized. Uninstalled/Reinstalled, still the same, and also, the Firefox font is screwed up, everythings bold, and in IE like Chrome, everything's italicized. I can't figure out how to change as, changing it in the options of the browser seems to do nothing. I can change the size, but that's it. Is there anyway to get rid of this manually? (Like ctrl+ something) or something, or has anyone else had this happen to them/ edit- in fact, it just seems to be my computer font in general. Most stuff is fine, but I've noticed even the font on ad-aware is different, so it's not just the internet.
Broward83 0 Report post Posted September 17, 2008 So, after Hurricane Ike, my router isn't working anymore. Its a Linksys WRT150N router. It lights up to show things connected but when I run an ethernet cable from my modem to the router, it doesn't seem to work and my connection drops. Any help would be appreciative. Scroby 0 Report post Posted October 3, 2008 I have a few Microsoft Excel 2007 questions. 1. Is there a way to make grid-line (cells) borders red? 2. Is there a way to delete a grid-line box, column, or row without having the words move over once the Grid-line box, column, or row is deleted? An example: I deleted a box because there wasn't anything typed in that box, but once I deleted it, the words shifted over to the left. Is there something I can change so this doesn't happen? 3. I would like either a word or a few sentences or even a paragraph to be outlined by a red box, am I able to do this with Excel and if so, how? An example: Say I write this sentence that I just typed out on an Excel sheet. Can I outline what I'm typing here, in a red bordered box and have it print out on the paper? Mike wanna be 0 Report post Posted November 15, 2008 My phone doesn't have a full keyboard, let alone internet access. Am I right in thinking it's one of those things that you don't realize how much you'll use it until you have it available to use, or am I just trying to justify making a huge cash investment for the sake of having a non-ancient phone?
