RavishingRickRudo 0 Report post Posted March 13, 2007 Agreed. Since it is under the guise of a "singing" competition, the deck is stacked towards voices that, well, are not "mainstream". As much as a Melinda Doolittles voice is nice and all, unless there was some radical reinvention, I wouldn't even think about buying an album from her. Carrie Underwoods best performances, imo, were with songs that weren't in her perceived niche. OTOH, when Mandisa did Shania, it was terrible. You get to see singers take risks and you get to reevaluate your thoughts on them when they are put in a different light. Motown night is such a safe thing to do, since Motown songs are ridiculously catchy and favour the type of singer the judges put through. This is also why I like the hot 100 night. Mainly because mainstream music relies more on production than vocal quality, so there is a certain amount of invention that comes along with adapting a song to a voice.. My god, if you look at the top ten on the billboard charts, its ridiculous. When the fallout boy dude is the purest voice out there, you really have to question how on-point this "singing" competition is. Not that the alternative is better, or exists, it's just necessity is the mother of invention and when you have a really good voice producers don't feel the need to enhance it. Thing is, I think the current scene is all about that enhancement. And you don't get a whole lot of that on idol.
Guest Queen Leelee Report post Posted March 14, 2007 Do 1 or 2 people get kicked off this week?
Black Lushus 0 Report post Posted March 14, 2007 oy...NOT a good start! I think it's one a week from here on out.
naiwf 0 Report post Posted March 14, 2007 Only 1 per week from now on. Brandon going first was a BAD idea. He's putting me to sleep again.
RavishingRickRudo 0 Report post Posted March 14, 2007 WHOA WHOA WHOA.
RavishingRickRudo 0 Report post Posted March 14, 2007 Simon just went to town. ...and in that town he buried Brandon Rogers deep underground without any hope of breathing air ever again. Of course, Brandon didn't help things either by forgetting the words and channeling Elvis(?)... oh and picking a song that Phil Collins covered.
naiwf 0 Report post Posted March 14, 2007 Brandon probably just saved Haley, Phil, Sanjaya and anyone else who might suck tonight.
Black Lushus 0 Report post Posted March 14, 2007 damn, the gay jokes are FLYING tonight...great script, writers!
Yuna_Firerose 0 Report post Posted March 14, 2007 Oh, zing. What is with Ryan and Simon this season? Their insults are only two shades away from being flirtacious, in my opinion. {Yes, I'm twisted like that}.
Black Lushus 0 Report post Posted March 14, 2007 Oh, zing. What is with Ryan and Simon this season? Their insults are only two shades away from being flirtacious, in my opinion. {Yes, I'm twisted like that}. I already said earlier the two of them should just fuck already and get it over with. They DID go on a trip overseas together, after all.
naiwf 0 Report post Posted March 14, 2007 I'm not loving this, but Melinda's not going anywhere.
RavishingRickRudo 0 Report post Posted March 14, 2007 Yeah, those "barbs" could not have been any more scripted. "Hey Simon, that's a really tight shirt" "That's what your boyfriend said" "I never knew you considered yourself my boyfriend" "That doesn't make any sense, why would I say "That's what *I* said"? "I banged Eva Longorias" "By "Banged" you mean, "cut her bangs", right" "Oh you, kisses!"
Black Lushus 0 Report post Posted March 14, 2007 Paula's back on the sauce, it seems...
Hawk 34 0 Report post Posted March 14, 2007 I know this isn't popular but I don't like Melinda. She's fine but she has no special quality that makes her a IDOL. She would have been great in a prior generation but the objective of this specific show doesn't suit her enough.
RavishingRickRudo 0 Report post Posted March 14, 2007 Wow, they are already into Paulas joyful tears, sobbing over the success of the obvious winners. Simon laughing at Paulas tears is great. Fucking Melinda crying at the huge applause saying "she has never heard anything like that".
Black Lushus 0 Report post Posted March 14, 2007 not feeling it, Chris, not feeling it...
naiwf 0 Report post Posted March 14, 2007 Sligh needs to put the glasses back on. Does he remind anyone else of John Popper back when he was fat? I thought that was good but I'm not sure that'll help him.
Black Lushus 0 Report post Posted March 14, 2007 he has nothing to worry about...THIS week...
RavishingRickRudo 0 Report post Posted March 14, 2007 Man, it's like Chris said "I feel really bad for Brandon, I am going to do something ridiculous too" Yeah, I am going to have to readjust my top contenders, cause the guys are making a go at the bottom 3. starvenger 0 Report post Posted March 14, 2007 Sligh needs to put the glasses back on. Does he remind anyone else of John Popper back when he was fat? I thought that was good but I'm not sure that'll help him. OK, why was he singing "Endless Love" to the tune of "Clocks"? As for that Fallout Boy comment... that fucking Arms Race song is in the Top 10? Payola sucks.

I thought that was good but I'm not sure that'll help him. OK, why was he singing "Endless Love" to the tune of "Clocks"? As for that Fallout Boy comment... that fucking Arms Race song is in the Top 10? Payola sucks. Fallout has had about six-seven top 40 hits. Fuck, a fall-out boy theme week would be more interesting then the samey bullshit that is Motown week. Gina looks better in casual gear then she does in the dressy stuff. Black Lushus 0 Report post Posted March 14, 2007 I'd give Gina a go
naiwf 0 Report post Posted March 14, 2007 So we're 1 for 4 so far tonight with Melinda being the only one who's actively trying to win.
Hawk 34 0 Report post Posted March 14, 2007 Fuck it, I'm riding the Gina Express now. Haley's the looker of the group but she's going nowhere. Gina, if she keeps the casual look going and doesn't fuck up will really shine against the R&B wall of death.
Black Lushus 0 Report post Posted March 14, 2007 Gina is tanking
RavishingRickRudo 0 Report post Posted March 14, 2007 Also? Covering one artists' catalogue sucks. I don't care which artist it is, it's bogus. God the energy of this show is just at a big time low.
RavishingRickRudo 0 Report post Posted March 14, 2007 And the black shirt Gina was wearing with Ross was awesome.
Black Lushus 0 Report post Posted March 14, 2007 i've always hated the theme weeks...doesn't play to EVERYONE'S strengths at all. stupid waste of time.
Hawk 34 0 Report post Posted March 14, 2007 I love how the judges keep going "it wasn't the right song choice"...they have a pretty limited selection to choose from to adhere to your own stupid convoluted ideas. Make it more diverse. Spread it out to cover all Motown songs, at least. Or a singer that is diverse.
RavishingRickRudo 0 Report post Posted March 14, 2007 Oh man, IIRC this is one of Simons favourite songs. Sanjaya is more than likely going to butcher it. And then Simon is going to butcher him. If the stage and venue doesn't eat him alive, the judges will.
