i hate agreeing with czech but seriously, some of you people need to shut the fuck up and actually watch a game instead of skimming the tsmthreads to figure out what's going on in the nfl. the colts rode a resurgent defence and their offence to the super bowl; the bears rode their defence and grossman made some plays (YES HE ACTUALLY MAKES PLAYS) and benson rushed like a beast and they had an entire drive handing it to thomas jones that ended in a touchdown en route to winning 39-14. i'd imagine they have a running game.

It's interesting that the 2002 Super Bowl crept into the conversation last week, because the Bears/Colts matchup has a lot of similarities to the Oakland/Tampa Bay showdown, with the Colts leveraging a tremendous offense built around a Pro Bowl quarterback and two outstanding wide receivers against the Bears, who have the nastiest defense in the league. The key difference, as alluded to in the other NFL discussion thread, is that there's no "Jon Gruden factor" to put the Colts at a significant disadvantage; there is certainly a familiarity there, since Lovie Smith (as a linebackers coach) helped Tony Dungy define the Tampa Bay variant on the Cover 2 defense that made the Buccaneers so successful, but nothing on the level of knowledge that Gruden held over the Oakland offense.

 

My initial thoughts are that the Bears can win this in a rout if they play up to their potential, but that's been the million dollar question about this team all year: against the Colts offense on neutral ground, the Bears may not be able to afford to let Rex Grossman pile up a 5/20 stat line at the helm. And I know it's hard to fathom, but remember how close the Saints managed to keep the game until the Brees safety in the second half - due to their red zone inefficiency and injuries on defense, the Bears are very capable of letting a team hang around.

Oh no question. If both teams bring their A-Game, the Bears are going to win and probably easily. But both teams have had a nasty tendency to lay an egg throughout the season, so realistically anybody has a shot.

You conveniently forgot that Jamal has a 1000 yard guy backing him up, and the Ravens have one of the better tight ends in the league. And a coach with more playoff experience than Lovie Smith.

Or a threat on the running game. The running game might be able for one or two drives. But to rely on it for the entire game? Please. The Bears defence needs to step up, stop Indy from getting to half and boot some field goals in.

The matchup dictates Dungy will have to vastly protect against the run, much like they did vs. KC. Thus, Grossman will have many opportunities. It will probably come down to if he hits a couple lucky bombs, though...

I'm taking the Colts, comfortably. No blowout nonsense, but a solid 13-15 point victory based around Indy spreading the ball around too much to let Chicago build up a lead, which is where their defense is lethal. As good as New Orleans' passing attack is, Brees is no Manning, and their young WRs are no Harrison/Wayne.

 

I'm looking for the Colts to score early, and the Bears are more of a meatgrinder team than comeback specialists.

Both teams have a great defense, the Bears' is better though.
