high school shenanigans

Because suggesting things to your kids will lead to them being spoiled idiots.

Parents said don't touch the hot stove, it will hurt. How many of you have a horrid stove shaped burn on your hand? You didn't have to find out on your own. Mom said it burns then it fucking burns.

By removing direct orders you are also making right and wrong turn into "Well, what do you think is right?" which is not how the world works. so yeah, you can avoid every factory job or office job you want, you can't avoid the law who will TELL you what to do or you are going to see that prison is not for everyone either.

According to you, every kid always listens to their parents and heeds their every word. If this were the case, the planet would either be perfect, or totally fucked up beyond repair. I say if you warn the kid, and he goes to do it anyway, that's his own problem. Save his life, try to avoid horrible scars and burns if you can, but other than that let the kid work his own shit out. 4 hours of sleep, not paying attention in school, those are the kid's problems due to the kid's choices; parents saying "Go to bed" or "pay attention" isn't going to suddenly swing them around to an A student that goes to bed at 8pm.

Hopefully everything essential has been said. Just wanted to add, this thread reminded me of this.

Marty Sherman: Being President's hard work. And all the other kids want to do is goof off and eat candy.

Jay Sherman: Son, as President, you're above that.

[remembers Ronald Reagan being sworn in]

Ronald Reagan: I do solemnly swear that as your President, I will goof off and eat candy.

[falls asleep at podium]

Crowd: Four more years! Four more years!

I hate threads like this.

Person One: We should let our kids smoke drugs and eat pure sugar!

Person Two: Nuh-uh, we should beat our kids with water hoses and make them memorize the encyclopedia!

Person Three: Ronald Reagan ate candy?

Person Four: You know what Barry Goldwater would've done in this situation...

Person Five: We should make the illegals beat our kids for us, and then send our kids off to work camps with the illegals.

Someone finally said something that made some sense in this thread.

I didn't say that it did. Never did I say telling them will work all the time. But by TELLING them you do keep the divide of Me adult/you child. My point is that they are not your equal. Doing something that is for them to become better is not a point of discussion when children by nature lack the ability to see past the present. Yes, staying up late watching porn and playing video games while eating only junk food might seem like a pretty sweet life to a kid. Are you going to say that if you suggested that they not watch thing not intended for their age level, eat some what healthy and go the fuck outside and do something they are going to pick that? No they aren't because they are fucking kids.

Saying "Pay attention" probably won't work. Saying pay attention and having consequences for not paying attention and forms of punishment is effective, at the very least more effective than suggesting they do it. A child will not grasp the importance oftheir schooling in the long run now. No more than a 10th grade girl will grasp that her boyfriend dumping her isn't the end of the world.

It is your job as a parent to set up guidlines and tell your kids to adhere to them. Of course they are going to rebel...also part of being a child. But if you don't do your part as an adult in the equation you are simply failing your child as a parent.

And honestly, you are going to sit here and pretend that a child that was told not to touch the stove but did it anyway would have not touched it if the parent said "Well...it will hurt but its up to you." Come on now.

The question here is whether people need discipline; whether people need to be disciplined into being good, and whether lack of discipline results in "spoiled brats." That's a pretty cynical view of children and human beings in general. I'm probably not going to win many over here but I think discipline is what anarchists are really fighting against, so I'm in favour of abolishing parental authority over children, abolishing schools and prisons and radically redesigning the workplace, family, and society, to eliminate discipline and punishment, because it just doesn't make any sense for anyone have the power to discipline others when all people are equals.

And yes, we are all equals despite our actions. I absolutely do not understand how showing compassion towards criminals is at odds with compassion towards victims. Does your conception of justice require that the guilty suffer? We are all fallible and all capable of committing crimes, and no one is beyond redemption. A conception of respect that is based on knowing your place in the hierarchy so you will respect force and how to wield it against others. The major problem in a lot of the posts here are the major social problems of capitalism and our society - the idea that people have varying degrees of economic worth, based on their economic contribution to society. You can sort of measure what people contribute, economically (we don't do it very well). But you can't ever measure a person's worth. Egalitarian thought is based on the idea that people have equal and innate social worth. I think we need to treat "criminals" with as much love as we treat anyone else - they need help, not punishment. I'd start with counselling and mushroom trip therapy :)

About video games: I think it's irrational to regiment kids' time and limit how often they can play video games. If they want to be playing the games and not doing whatever other activity you have planned for them they would probably benefit more from games.

I don't define a kid's activities in terms of how it relates to his parents. Video games are not "used" by parents on kids, they are used by kids for fun (the same way one does a crossword or plays chess for fun - all three are good uses of your time if they are what you want to be doing). Offering them as a "reward" (an authoritarian notion in itself since the ability to reward is the flip side of the ability to punish - both are based on control) for good behaviour or time well spent on "healthy" activities doesn't seem like a particularly wise parenting strategy. It teaches the kid to value the games more highly than he otherwise would, because time spent on them is in limited supply. That might lead a kid to want to play more nintendo and his parents might perceive that as wanting to play it all day, but if kids' video gaming activities are not constrained they will use them the exact same way free adults do, so there's no reason to assume kids want to play nintendo all day. They might want to play them more than their parents think think they should, but I don't know of any parents who think their kids do too many crosswords, and there is no reason crosswords are better than video games.

Besides, video games are good for you:

Video games keep you young: Study

Forget cards and gentle aerobics - the best way to keep the elderly sharp is to teach them to play video games, new research suggests.

Psychology research at Hamilton’s McMaster University shows gamers who spend more than four hours a week playing action video games such as Medal of Honour and Half Life 2 have a surprising array of skills ranging from quick reaction times and good spatial reasoning to a strong awareness of their surroundings and better short-term memory.

With as little as 10 hours of training, non-gamers start to show the same mental strengths, says psychology researcher Jim Karle, a graduate student in the department of psychology, neuroscience and behaviour.

Calling video games “beneficial for the brain,” Karle suggested they could be used to help reduce cognitive decline in the elderly.

“Individuals who play action video games on a regular basis - more then four hours a week -appear to be very good at an astonishing variety of skills,” said Karle.

“Just as an elderly adult may do 15 minutes of weight training to fight osteoporosis,” he said, “so could he or she play video games to keep the mind sharp.”

Finally, i'm not sure what my age has anything to with my anarchist beliefs. Were Bakunin, Goldman, Kropotkin, Chomsky, Bookchin, etc. all angst ridden teenagers? I'm pretty sure in 10 or even 20 years I'll still have the same belief in the fundamentals of what I consider anarchism, socialism and democracy: commitment to social equality, environmentalism, non-violence, civil liberties, solidarity, and participatory democracy, in opposition to hierarchy and coercion. I guess freedom and self-determination are hard concepts to grasp.

That was truly the dumbest thing I've ever heard or read, and I've heard a lot. Congratulations. Why don't we abolish the prisons, and let the worst ones from the one nearest you move in with you? You're all equals, I'm sure you'll get along.

Hell yes. If carried out properly it would be a deterrent.

Make more homes for the homeless. Thereby eliminating the useless shit we have in this country. And believe me we have ALOT of useless shit in this country. Golf courses have enough land for alot of homes. I would also eliminate Wallstreet cuz Captialism would be dead. Everything is at a reasonable price like DVD's cost $20.00 and computers $10.00. Everyone would get food as I would send food mobiles to give food to people sort of like the milkman but the food man. Everyone owns everything so that means Joe Smloe with the glass eye and beer belly could own part of the New York Yankees or Trump Plaza. No inflation due to low prices for everything. Believe me, more people will buy if it is at a reasonable price. AND STAY OUT OF INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS! A military yes. But only to defend us[/N]. No special missions or shit. Socialism will take over.

You're a bad teen cliché. Which is not to say I think you're in your teens...but rather that you've somehow survived into adulthood with every cringe-inducing atom of adolescent pretension and ignorance intact.

See, fade away makes it sound like they will leave slowly. It is a hard cut right into reality. Well...maybe not until you make your first payment.

Yeah, that's the truth right there. Once you have an investment like that, you start to think "Hmmm...maybe I don't want my income redistributed to the homeless".

I always thought it was a hard one to the left into oncoming traffic towards the brick wall of reality.

Course in his world, there would be no prison or school or any taxes really. And I guess homes would be free and everyone would smile at you as you walked down the street.

I swear, the first time I had to pay the car note, rent (which is higher than alot of mortgages), student loan, insurance (health, life and car) and utilities out of one check, I caught myself staring at a Brinks truck and thinking "Really...I think I could get away with this", before I snapped back to reality.

Thats what real life does. It makes honest everyday citizens consider federal crime, if only for a second.

What does carrying it out "properly" mean? And obviously punishment doesn't act as a deterrent.

I do believe some dangerous offenders should be isolated from society, but it should be humane, and with an aim towards rehabilitation and reintegration into the community.

I'd like to know if C-Bacon has a job or owns a house. When you actually are a productive member of society and own some substantive property, a lot of the utopian delusions tend to fade away.

Yes Invader, I do work. And although i'm not sure if i'll own a house in the future, I find it highly unlikely that my beliefs would change if I did.

Any yeah, it's pretty funny how floyd gets all angry and tells everyone to stop replying to me when he replies to more of my posts than anyone. And it's always the same tired response rather than an actual rebuttal.
