This Week in Baseball 4/9 - 4/15

Recommended Posts

Indians-Angels in Milwaukee last night drew about 19,000. So much for the predictions of only 3-4,000 people in attendance. Yes, the 10 buck tickets for field level surely helped a lot, but it just goes to show that Milwaukee is a good baseball town after all.

Jaret Wright is hurt..havent heard anything but it appears that Hayden Penn isn't making his start in the minors so he could be brought up with Wright on the DL.

Wonderful...actually..it is, despite how well Wright pitched last night.

Michael Kay predicts on the Yankees post game that Johnny Damon will hit 30 homers.

Johnny Damon has never hit for more than 24 HRs in a season... in all of his 12 seasons played. Why would he hit 30 now?

He won't. It's a stupid thing to say. He just had a career year at age 32 and only hit 24 HRs. He probably won't even match that number, let alone reach 30. It's not atypical to see a player gain some power and patience later in their career, but I just don't think that's realistic for Damon. The Yankees, however, better hope that he can learn to hit like that because he's probably a little more than a year away from having to become a corner outfielder.

Because he's a Yankee. Those pinstripes grant superhuman powers. Didn't you know that?

To clarify, I intended my Johnny Damon comment as snark. No, Johnny Damon is not likely to hit 30 home runs this year. It doesn't take an effort of statistical hoop-jumping to come to that conclusion. He's never hit 30 homers before, his career high is 24 and he's past the stage where we'd expect improvement in his player. Now, if the prediction came from a scout or someone with inside insight, the prediction might carry weight. But it's Michael Kay, a capable broadcaster but not a person I'd feel carries substantial weight when it comes to inside analysis.

As for future seasons, he might become a burden on the Yankees, I don't know. The problem is that you either have to suffer back-ends of contracts or miss out on the free agency market.

Last night in Arizona, we saw two #1 overall draft picks on the field together. How often have we seen two or more #1 overall drafts picks on the same line-up?

Oh, same lineup.

Griffey and Alexander.

Oh, and have seen Alexander on PTI today. Good lord, his sexiness just isn't fair.

It only took 8 games for Francoeur to draw his first walk of the season. Will wonders never cease?

The Nationals on the road to getting shutout again. This may be the worst hitting team ever.

I find it funny with all the "DAISUKE VS. ICHIRO OMG!!!!" nonsense Johjima is the one doing the damage.

The Nats better lose 120 this year. They need karmic retribution for falling ass-backwards into like 50 1-run wins in 2005.

I think it kind of balanced out in the second half of the season. They won a fuckload of 1-run games to start the season, but then I remember them losing most of their 1-run games down the stretch, including a 3 game series vs Atlanta where they lost all three games by 1 run. :D

and off to the DL Mussina is most likely headed. Left the game with a hamstring injury or something in that area.

If the Red Sox make any moves this season I hope to god it will be upgrading CF and getting rid of Joel Piniero.

Well, I just heard on WEEI that there's gonna be a four-way trade where the Red Sox get Ichiro, Rocco Baldelli, and Carl Crawford for Matt Clement and prospects.

When I read this, my first reaction was that I was going to have to yell at Frigid Soul again.

I know that it's only been a week and a half, but it's abundantly clear that the Red Sox are going to have to upgrade their lineup somewhere if they want to compete this year. They just don't have any offense in the 6-9 spots. I'm not exactly sure what's out there to acquire, but Theo should be kicking tires before things get too desperate.

And 16,000 tonight after people, not learning anything, thought sales would drop off into Marlins numbers after the first game.
