World's Worst Man Posted June 24, 2007 Report Posted June 24, 2007 Toronto's Dustin McGowan throws 8 innings of no hit baseball and gives up a hit to a bum in the 9th Toronto pitchers have the worst luck with that stuff. Dave Stieb had his infamous 8 2/3 IP no hitter, Halladay did the same to the Tigers back in 1998 I think, Shaun Marcum had a no hitter through 6 earlier this year before getting pulled, only to throw another 4 innings of no hit ball in his next start.

You mean 8 2/3? He did that in consecutive starts in 1988. He had 2 strikes on both batters that got hits, too.

Uribe standing directly in Pagan's path wiped out everything that happened after that. Thank goodness, too, because it was like a little league game once the collision happened. But in true Cub form, Pagan STILL got caught in a rundown that counted on the next play.

In the past few years Buehrle and Thomas carried the White Sox. After Frank left, all I had was Buehrle. If he's gone, I have no real reason to root for the White Sox anymore beyond the "hometown" thing, which isn't even true anymore now that I've been a San Diego resident for the past 5 years.

Edit: And I meant Schilling probably won't be back next year and Wakefield is getting older. If your 08 rotation is Beckett, Buehrle, Dice-K, Lester, and Bucholz then you're in pretty good shape.

Speaking of believing it when I see it, the Cubs swept at Comiskey for the first time ever, Chicago's fashionable north side takes the Crosstown Classic for the first time in god-knows-when, two runs for the Sox all weekend, and the Brewers are about to lose right now to bring the Cubs a game closer. However, since it's highly unlikely we catch Milwaukee, this was probably my World Series, unfortunately. I'm gonna go celebrate with an Italian beef sammich and a bottle of Green River. woo cubbies

However the Red Sox seem to be the front runner in aquiring him with the prospects they have. If he chooses to not sign an extension so he can go to St. Louis then he probably isn't traded and the White Sox end up with two first round picks.

Possibly Jim Thome, but I don't know. The White Sox' payroll is above $100 million, and I'm sure Reinsdorf will be calling for a fire sale quite soon.

The Danks/Masset-McCarthy trade was a win, and the Garcia-Floyd trade was a push, so it's not like those were the downfall of the team as some had expected. It's mostly been the bullpen being awful: one guy even got DFAed because he couldn't pitch back-to-back games. With Thome, Konerko, Dye, and the rotation, there was no reason for them being this bad.

The Garcia trade was a win for the Sox because Garcia's likely out until his contract expires. Gio Gonzalez is the real prize of that deal and he's pitching well in AA.

While I think the Mets have worse luck, not having any no-hitters yet, the Jays have had something like 9 no-hit bids broken up in the 9th. Seems pretty high for a 30 year history.
