Wow, I forgot. I hope your right. Patton Oswalt needs to get himself a #1 picture under his belt. He'll never be box office draw in the lead role any other way. Plus this will see once and for all if everything Pixar touches turns to gold.

justsoyouknow Posted June 24, 2007 Report Posted June 24, 2007 Evan Almighty is already being heralded as a disappointment. $175 million to make, plus another $50 million in marketing = 225 million. They've got to not be pleased with this one. But they must be satisfied with 1408. Smart scary movies are hard to come by, and when I saw it last night, the theatre was packed, with people coming in right up until the movie started. It's gotten good word of mouth around here, so I see it going strong for a few weeks. Hopefully it'll bring about some more movies of the type, as opposed to the "torture porn" genre we keep getting. This is gonna be a huge weekend at the movies. Ratatouille, Live Free of Die Hard, plus Sicko, plus the current crop of good movies out? Good time of year to be in the film industry.

It had twice as many two screens compared to 1408's one, and it still only pulled in 20 more people that 1408 did. 1408 surprised me by having near sell-outs in all it's night shows in a 283 seat theater. Mighty Heart just didn't exist to a lot of people. Knocked Up is still getting a lot of love. Good for them cracking the 100 mil mark. How much did DOA have this week? A thousand bucks?

At this pace, it may not make half a million total at the American box office. It currently ranks as the lowest box office total for a video game film in history, even less than Pokemon: Heroes and Double Dragon. It has made 6 million in the foreign markets though.

The fact that DOA was killed after one week shows just how badly it did. I think Ratatouille will have great word of mouth that carries it throughout the summer. It's getting amazing reviews, and if Cars can make a shitload of money, so can Ratatouille.

At least, not enought to justify how appallingly it did. I agree that it could have been helped by an A or even B list star in it. I can only assume that all of the big name actresses who were possibly sent the script (Jessica Alba, Eva Mendes..etc ) turned their noses up at it.

I can't wait for the DVD! Seriously. I didn't see one commercial or preview for this. Evan Almighty's budget was $225 million? A sequel with less star power in the lead role than the original? Brilliant! From the trailer I saw, it seemed like it was more of a Learn Something Bible Story than a funny movie. Pass. Transformers is gonna rock. PG-13 Die Hard will probably suck. YIPEE KI YAY, MOTHER FRIGGER! Surprised Fantastic Four is kicking ass after the horrible first one. Knocked Up was so good. Only a little less funny than 40 Year Old Virgin but the drama was much better and it's still an upper echelon movie. Still gets an "A" from me for amazing writing and characterization. I refuse to see Ocean's 13 because I found the last one to be awful, as did all my friends, who usually like everything, so no one would go see it with me anyway. Shrek 1 and 2 were amazing, Shrek 3 felt unfresh, unfunny, and out of ideas. Didn't like it. Hostel 2 was okay. 1408 is probably good, as Cusack is excellent and the previews reminded me of his work in "Identity", which was really good, so no surprise to see it doing so well.
bob_barron Posted June 25, 2007 Report Posted June 25, 2007 I don't think the Weinstein Co. launched an advertising campaign for DOA, just a trailer. They probably were contractually obligated to release it in theatres, so they just buried it on 500 screens and hoped for the best.
