2007 Battle of Los Angeles Takes Place August 31, September 1 & 2

 

On August 31, September 1 & 2, 2007, Pro Wrestling Guerrilla's Battle of Los Angeles will take place for the third consecutive year, with a wider variety of competitors than ever before. Each year, PWG has raised the bar with the Battle of Los Angeles tournament, and this year will be no exception. Venue, ticket prices, and other information will be announced soon, but right here on the PWG Forum and the 2007 BOLA Mini-Site (http://www.prowrestlingguerrilla.com/BOLA2007/) we will be announcing the First Round matches every two to three days, starting July 9, 2007.

 

Now, in no particular order, the competitors of the 2007 Battle of Los Angeles:

 

01 - Joey Ryan - The longest reigning PWG World Champion clinched his spot in the annual tournament by defeating Ronin at Night 1 of DDT4, automatically making Joey Ryan the first entrant in the tournament. Since losing the belt in early 2007, Joey has been looking for the path of least resistance back to the PWG World Championship. Unfortunately for him there's no easy way to the top, so he's setting his sights on the 2007 Battle of Los Angeles. More specifically, his sights are set on the Wildcard match the tournament winner receives, which Joey Ryan has already stated will be a World Title Shot for the former champ.

 

02 - "The Anarchist" Doug Williams - The 2007 Battle of Los Angeles will mark the PWG debut of arguably the finest mat technician in the world, "The Anarchist" Doug Williams. A 14 year veteran of the sport of professional wrestling, Williams has recently been beating respect for the British style of Wrestling into the heads of wrestlers and fans alike in Pro Wrestling NOAH. But Williams decided that the Japanese have had enough for now, and will instead turn his amateur destructo-phrenology on the competitors of the 2007 Battle of Los Angeles tournament.

 

03 - Susumu Yokosuka - Another competitor who will be making his PWG debut at the 2007 Battle of Los Angeles is Dragon Gate star Susumu Yokosuka. Yokosuka has been with Dragon Gate since the company formed, and in that time has had many memorable battles with 2006 Battle of Los Angeles quarter-finalist Dragon Kid. Yokosuka's brings not only his speed and hard-hitting offense, but his desire to prove himself on the international stage to the 2007 Battle of Los Angeles.

 

04 - Dragon Kid - Making his return to PWG for the 2007 Battle of Los Angeles will be Dragon Gate competitor Dragon Kid. In his last PWG appearance, Dragon Kid was eliminated from the 2006 Battle of Los Angeles by Roderick Strong in the quarter-final round. Since then, Dragon Kid has undergone some changes and taken on a much more aggressive attitude inside the ring. But will the new attitude be enough to carry Dragon Kid all the way through the 2007 tournament?

 

05 - "Photogenic" Chris Bosh - The winner of the inaugural Battle of Los Angeles tournament in 2005, Chris Bosh returns to the tournament in 2007 intent on winning it once again, cementing his "Mr. September" reputation. Bosh was one half of the PWG World Tag Team Champions during the tournament in 2006, and therefore did not compete. He has no such hindrance going in to this year's tournament, but how much will his loyalty to The Dynasty come in to play if he crosses paths with stablemate Joey Ryan in the 2007 Battle of Los Angeles?

 

06 - Davey Richards - The other Battle of Los Angeles winner, Davey Richards, is the sixth entry into 2007's tournament. After having great success as a tag team wrestler for the majority of 2006, Richards entered the tournament and won by defeating CIMA in the final round. After winning, he immediately decided to team with Super Dragon once again, and use his Wildcard match to go after the PWG World Tag Team titles, which ultimately did not happen. Since then, Richards only held the PWG World Tag Team titles for a brief 24 hour period, and has decided to refocus his PWG career on singles wrestling. However, unlike tag team wrestling, if Richards loses in the 2007 Battle of Los Angeles tournament, he will have no one else to blame but himself.

 

07 - Jimmy Rave - The first North American competitor set to make their PWG debut in the tournament, Jimmy Rave is the seventh entry into the 2007 Battle of Los Angeles. Rave, who first made his mark on the world of professional wrestling in his home state of Georgia, has gained a reputation as a world class competitor over the course of his career. From his epic battles with AJ Styles and "American Dragon" Bryan Danielson, to more recently when he has toured Japan with Dragon Gate, Jimmy Rave is a hot commodity in the world of professional wrestling. This makes him a perfect competitor for the 2007 Battle of Los Angeles.

 

08 - Chris Hero - Making his second Battle of Los Angeles appearance, Chris Hero is the eighth entry into the 2007 tournament. A master of many style of professional wrestling, Hero's versatility did not help him last year as he was caught off guard by the quickness of Genki Horiguchi, and eliminated in the first round of the tournament. Since then, Chris Hero has toured with Pro Wrestling NOAH and continued to improve his already impressive skill set, but it remains to be seen if that will help him in the 2007 Battle of Los Angeles.

 

09 - Human Tornado - He is a familiar face to fans of PWG, but this year will mark his first tournament appearance; Human Tornado is the ninth competitor in the 2007 Battle of Los Angeles. In his short career, Tornado has already reached the top of the mountain in PWG, holding both the World Championship and the World Tag Team Championship on separate occasions. However, his reigns were brief, but now a more experienced Human Tornado is ready prove he can climb back to the top of the mountain, and this time stay there.

 

10 - Jack Evans - The tenth entrant in the 2007 Battle of Los Angeles tournament is a veteran of both previous tournaments, but has never advanced past the semi-final round. In 2007, Jack Evans hopes to rectify that. After spending the majority of the last sixteen months wrestling and training with Dragon Gate in Japan, Evans feels he is at the highest level of his career so far. Combining his high flying offense with smart (but fancy) mat wrestling, Evans feels he is fully prepared to not only go past the semi-finals in 2007, but win the whole thing.

 

11 - Tyler Black - The eleventh competitor to be announced for the 2007 Battle of Los Angeles has only made two appearances in PWG, but in those appearances, Tyler Black has impressed the fans and management immensely. Originally teaming with Jimmy Jacobs in PWG, an ACL injury to Jacobs prevented their team from competing in the DDT4 tournament. Now flying solo, Black's most recent appearance was hugely successful, defeating the longest reigning former PWG World Champion and the first entrant in the 2007 Battle of Los Angeles, Joey Ryan. This victory instantly earned Tyler Black a spot in the 2007 Battle of Los Angeles. Will his stock continue to rise, and a new legacy in PWG be born? Or will it all prove to be too much, too soon for young Tyler Black?

14 - El Generico - The next three entrants into the 2007 Battle of Los Angeles tournament are already familiar with fans of PWG, and fans of professional wrestling around the world. Together, PAC, Roderick Strong, and El Generico make up the three current champions in Pro Wrestling Guerrilla, and for the first time ever, they will all be entered in the Battle of Los Angeles tournament. That is, if they are still champions after July 29 at PWG's Fourth Anniversary show. All three men were given the option of not competing, and defending their titles in non-tournament matches over the Battle of Los Angeles weekend, but all three competitors declined. When asked why, they each stated that even though holding their title in PWG is a huge honor, being able to win the Battle of Los Angeles is something else entirely. Because the 2007 Battle of Los Angeles is about winning the tournament and not capturing the titles (for that weekend, at least), it was determined that none of the belts would be on the line in tournament bouts. So with all three men sharing titles along with the same sentiments, the twelfth, thirteenth, and fourteenth competitors in the 2007 Battle of Los Angeles are PWG World Tag Team Champions PAC, Roderick Strong, and PWG World Champion El Generico.

 

15 - Matt Sydal - A veteran of last year's tournament, Matt Sydal is intent on having a better showing in the 2007 Battle of Los Angeles than he did in 2006. Due to a hectic travel schedule, Sydal arrived in Los Angeles mere hours before the tournament began, and was caught off guard by the high level of competition he faced. These factors contributed to a first round loss for Sydal, something he does not wish to repeat again. This year, Sydal is scheduled to arrive in Los Angeles a few days prior to the tournament, ensuring he is wrestling at peak physical and mental condition.

 

16 - "The Professional" Scott Lost - The sixteenth entrant in the tournament is another man making his second Battle of Los Angeles appearance, and he is also another man committed to making it past the first round. Scott Lost is known primarily for his tag team wrestling in PWG, but he hopes that the 2007 Battle of Los Angeles will be his opportunity to repeat what his tag team partner Chris Bosh did in 2005. However, with an expanded field, all three PWG World Champions, and both previous Battle of Los Angeles winners in the tournament, Scott Lost may be in for the toughest weekend of his life if he expects to win this year's tournament.

 

17 - "Double C" Claudio Castagnoli - The other half of the tag team known as the "Kings of Wrestling," Claudio Castagnoli is the seventeenth entrant in the 2007 Battle of Los Angeles. After a first round loss in 2006's tournament, Claudio admitted he was unprepared for the quickness of Jack Evans last year. But there is a reason why he is the "Most Money Making Man In Professional Wrestling," and he has used the time since tournament to train extensively, in preparation for virtually any opponent. Will "Double C's" commitment to excellence be enough for him to bring the trophy home to Switzerland this September?

 

18 - SHINGO - After spending time in the United States on a learning excursion, SHINGO returned to Japan earlier this year and quickly took Dragon Gate by storm. Already bored with the level of competition in Japan, SHINGO is intent on returning to America to prove that he is no longer a student, but a master of professional wrestling. Though the reputation of an international top talent is tough to earn, as the eighteenth competitor in the 2007 Battle of Los Angeles, SHINGO definitely will have the opportunity.

 

19 - "Mr. Wrestling" Kevin Steen - A veteran of both previous Battle of Los Angeles tournaments, former PWG World Champion "Mr. Wrestling" Kevin Steen has been unable to advance past the second round on each occasion. But to hear him tell it, 2007 is Kevin Steen's year, and the 2007 Battle of Los Angeles is his for the taking. Though sheer force of will can only get you so far, "Mr. Wrestling" is hoping that combined with his three A's (Ability, Agility, and Awesomeness), force of will is going to be enough to propel him into the finals, and beyond.

 

20 - "American Dragon" Bryan Danielson - Making it to the semi-finals in 2005, "American Dragon" Bryan Danielson was sidelined by an injury which prevented him from competing in the Battle of Los Angeles tournament in 2006. However, the past matters little to Danielson, as he is more prepared than ever to prove he deserves the title of "World's Greatest" by winning the 2007 Battle of Los Angeles. Though there will be twenty-three others in the tournament, Danielson is nonplussed, seeing them as merely stepping stones on his path to glory. But what happens if he is matched up with someone like CIMA, who little over a month ago took Danielson to a thirty minute time limit draw? He may not care about the other wrestlers, but the clock may prove to be Bryan Danielson's worst enemy in the tournament.

 

21 - Super Dragon - Plagued by injuries for the last year, Super Dragon was to make his triumphant return to Pro Wrestling Guerrilla at DDT4, where along with Davey Richards, he expected to regain the PWG World Tag Team titles. However, only Super Dragon and his doctor knew the extent of his injuries, and at DDT4, Super Dragon not only was unable to reclaim the titles, but re-injured his ankle in the process. Now with months of recuperation ahead of him, Super Dragon has the 2007 Battle of Los Angeles to motivate him on his road to recovery. Motivation not just for the prestige of winning the annual tournament, but to also repair his damaged reputation as the most dominant force in PWG.

 

22 - Rocky "Azucar" Romero - One of the few men in the 2007 Battle of Los Angeles to compete in both previous tournaments, Rocky Romero has used the past to shape his future as a professional wrestler. Already showing willingness to learn from his mistakes, Romero avenged his first round loss in 2006 by defeating Roderick Strong in singles competition earlier this year. Now heading into the 2007 tournament, Rocky Romero is more focused than ever on making up for past mistakes, and he is ready to make anyone he faces find out first hand.

 

23 - Nigel McGuinness - The twenty-third entrant in the 2007 Battle of Los Angeles, and the final man making his PWG debut during the tournament, Nigel McGuinness seems to be tailor made for winning this tournament. McGuinness was crowned the King of Europe earlier this year, in a tournament where he beat out seven other 2007 Battle of Los Angeles competitors, including fellow Englishman Doug Williams in the final round. Combine that with his brutal encounters with Bryan Danielson, and experience wrestling at least one third of the other 2007 Battle of Los Angeles competitors, Nigel McGuinness seems like an early favorite without ever having set foot in a PWG ring. However, the twenty-three other competitors direct your attention to the words of Flava Flav, from a hit single by Public Enemy in 1988.

 

24 - CIMA - The final competitor to be announced for the 2007 Battle of Los Angeles shocked fans and wrestlers alike when in his PWG debut he made it all the way to the final round of the 2006 Battle of Los Angeles before being defeated by Davey Richards. Looking to repeat his success this year, CIMA has preparing by bringing some fellow 2007 Battle of Los Angeles competitors to Japan in order to scout them and have first hand experience wrestling them prior to this year's tournament. However, the move may backfire on the ace of Dragon Gate, because for as good as CIMA's research may be, El Generico, PAC, Jack Evans, or Matt Sydal's may be better.

It was a great match. I'd put it way up there on my list of favorite 2007 PWG matches. Can't go wrong with the DDT tourney.

2007 Battle of Los Angeles Takes Place August 31, September 1 & 2

Stewartville, CA - For the last two years, Pro Wrestling Guerrilla has held the Battle of Los Angeles tournament, and for the last two years, each tournament has, due to injury, seen some changes to the lineup. This year will be no exception, as Austin Aries already defeated Rocky "Azucar" Romero, to win Romero's spot in the tournament. Now word has come that an injury to the winner of the 2005 Battle of Los Angeles winner, "Photogenic" Chris Bosh, has forced him out of the tournament. Not only that, but Bosh has decided to take an indefinite leave of absence from Professional Wrestling. In the wake of this news, PWG Commissioner of Professional Wrestling Dino Winwood has decided that the best possible solution is to offer fans a match they were recently deprived of as a first round match 2007 Battle of Los Angeles. Despite his luck at PWG fourth anniversary show, "Mr. Wrestling" Kevin Steen will now face "Mr. Fighting" Necro Butcher in the C Block of the 2007 Battle of Los Angeles.

 

Originally scheduled to take place at Giant-Size Annual #4, the match between Necro Butcher and Kevin Steen was a form of punishment for Kevin Steen's vocal opposition and continual defiance of PWG management. However due to some liquor induced transportation problems, the card for Giant-Size Annual #4 was changed, and Kevin Steen ended up with a shot at the PWG World Tag Team Titles, which he won with partner El Generico. This good fortune did not prevent Steen from running his mouth about Dino Winwood, and as a result, Kevin Steen is once again scheduled to face Necro Butcher, but this time the stakes have been raised exponentially.

 

Necro Butcher's mere presence greatly alters the tournament landscape, not only from a strategic standpoint for the other competitors, but also from a matchmaking standpoint. In order to give the fans the best tournament matches possible, Commissioner of Food & Beverage Excalibur and Commissioner of Wrestling Dino Winwood have altered two other tournament matches. First, on Night One of the tournament former PWG World Tag Team Champion Roderick Strong will now take on Austin Aries, who made his PWG return last month at Giant-Size Annual #4. On Night Two of the tournament, not only will Necro Butcher battle Kevin Steen, but 2006 Battle of Los Angeles winner Davey Richards will face the debuting Nigel McGuinness. We apologize for the changes to the card, and hope that the fans will nonetheless enjoy all three nights of the 2007 Battle of Los Angeles.

 

If you haven't purchased your tickets yet, it would behoove you to do it as soon as possible! A very small quantity of First Row 3 Night Passes are left, and once they're gone, that's it! I know Im a year late but I finished watching BOLA 2006 a few weeks ago. They were sitting around for about 5 months and I finally got around to watch them. All 3 nights were great. The only bad match imo was Quicksilver vs Dragon Kid. It just didnt flow.

Looks like a strong line-up again this year. Not really a big SHINGO fan and I've never seen Yokosuka. Besides that, all the matches have a certain appeal to them. Jack vs. PAC is either going to be insanely good or a bit of a mess IMO.

1. Matt Jackson and Nick Jackson defeated Phoenix Star and Zokre.

2. Battle Of Los Angeles Tournament First Round: Joey Ryan defeated Chris Hero via Reverse Decision to advance to the Quarter-Finals of the Battle Of Los Angeles Tournament. Hero originally had the match won following the Hero's Welcome, but the referee saw brass knuckles on Hero's hand (which were never used by Hero and interjected into the match by Scott Lost) when raising his hand, resulting in him reversing his original decision.

3. Battle Of Los Angeles Tournament First Round: Roderick Strong defeated Austin Aries with a small package to advance to the Quarter-Finals of the Battle Of Los Angeles Tournament.

4. Battle Of Los Angeles Tournament First Round: Matt Sydal defeated Jimmy Rave with the Shooting Sydal Press to advance to the Quarter-Finals of the Battle Of Los Angeles Tournament.

5. Battle Of Los Angeles Tournament First Round: Alex Shelley defeated Tyler Black with the Shiranui to advance to the Quarter-Finals of the Battle Of Los Angeles Tournament.

I don't like that CIMA eliminated both Strong and Generico in the finals. I actually don't really like CIMA winning the whole thing, either.
