Smackdown Vs Raw 08

I always keep losing Ladder Matches on this damn game when someone's just about to grab the belt because instead of just tipping the ladder over, I'll try to climb the ladder, but slip on the first rung. So frustrating.

You should just get under them and grapple once they grab the belt. You'll pull 'em right off if the belt meter isn't empty. I actually like that about the ladder matches for '07 and '08: the belt meter. I tried playing a HCTP ladder match the other week, and I won it in under 2 minutes on Legend after throwing my opponent out of the ring and then climbing the ladder to grab the belt. Too easy. Not like the MitB matches in '07...those are fucking impossible.

Also, if anybody doesn't know how to light a table on fire, I just looked it up:

Have a finisher, and then stand next to a set-up table and press your finisher button. OR, after picking up the table, hold R1 and then tap triangle when setting the table up to throw a match on it and fire it up. Obviously that's for PS2/PS3, so for 360...replace R1 with RB and triangle with Y.

I am looking to get a current gen wrestling game, and I was thinking of just grabbing 07. It should be around 14 bucks in stores now, or a little less online.

I didn't like HCTP honestly. I honestly don't like 07 but its the best(only?) option on current gen.

Actually, I'd say get '06. It has faster gameplay than '07, though the inclusion of Ultimate Control grapples in '07 is very nice. The GM mode in '06, the first GM mode, is still the best, as you can have two people feud without worrying about their face/heel alignment or the awful, awful storylines (something I felt hurt it irreparably in '07). Plus, it has a little more moves than '07 does, and a roster that includes Angle, London, and Tajiri.

Is there any sort of competitive GM mode in this? I had heard prior that it got absorbed into 24/7 mode. The guy I was playing it with, we never finished 07 anyway, but just wondering.

This is the first time I didn't have the game on reserve... I normally get past all the complaints and just enjoy the updated roster, but if I bought a game today it would be Mario Galaxy over this. The other issue is I'm just assuming the PS2 version is rushed and awful compared to the apparently not that great anyway big brothers and I imagine the Wii version is gimmicky and toned down more than the PS2 version. It was weird, earlier this year I watched Punk's 360 entrance and PS2 entrance... it looked like - much like Sandman's crowd entrance - Punk's hair was a seventh generation exclusive that PS2 owners didn't get.

2006 is great for two reasons:

1. Ted DiBiase, meaning the game has the Million Dollar Title and one of the best theme songs in history.

2. WrestleMania IX arena.

One of the better things about 2006 and 2007 was the title matches in exhibition mode. Does that still exist?

Best option? Fire Pro Returns, if you have a PS3 or still have your PS2. It's sad, but true, that the port of a 2D wrestling game beats the shit out of the latest version of next-gen system's "premiere" wrestling game in terms of producing quality wrestling sims. Just better, deeper gameplay.

My interest for FPR dropped a bit when I realized you were all getting edits from the internet with that wacky Maxdrive (I had some bizarre hope that everyone looked good enough to infringe on copyright but had the wrong name). Still should be fun though.

I hope that people will still put CAW formulas online for those of us - such as myself - who aren't going the Maxdrive route. It's going to be a pain in the ass to come up with all those edits on my own from scratch.

However, I will do that if it comes to it.

On the other hand, my CAWs often look off anyway, so maybe I could quickly do it myself if I knew who was who (and I'm sure that's online).

It's funny, reading about the 24/7 mode SOUNDS good (Tommy Dreamer - ECW GM? Sign me up!) but I guess it just comes off as a big step down.

I was feeling really frustrated with all the moves they took out of the game and the limitations that come with the fighting styles, but something is telling me to keep this game. I don't know what. I guess I'm having too much fun with the custom theme songs.

I figured out an awesome strategy for one on one ladder matches because the AI in this game is fuckin retarded. Let them climb up the ladder, grab the belt and then start draining the belt meter. Once they get it down towards the end, punch em in the face and throw them off and snatch the belt. Works like a charm. Money in the Bank, however, requires pure luck and being a sneaky bastard.

As for the flaming table, don't forget that you need an UCM to put em through the table.

All you have to do, especially for MITB, is grab with two hands. (And if a guy is on the rung like right next to you...don't just sit there still grabbing, just waiting for him to punch you...)

Do that, and someone else will usually climb, and the other computers will automatically attempt to knock the ladder over. You will hang. Drain the meter about a third of the way down. I won the MITB challenge doing this with Lashley, grabbed it 3 times before winning, without anyone else even getting a chance to touch it.

Ive stumbled upon a bad glitch..

just hit Show Stealer level, went to save and it froze up..

Couldnt get out of the locker room, so I had to unplug my Wii Plugged it back in and the same music was still playing in the locker room..I hit eject, popped the disc out and put it back in and the same thing..the wierdest damn thing Ive ever seen..

I put Mario Galaxy in, and the screen just stays blank. The little "No Home" icon pops up in the upper corner. I think my W!! is fucked up. ARGH!

I've been enjoying it and 24/7 has gotten stale really quickly but I'm pushing on to get better stats for my CAWs. By the way, has anyone encountered a glitch with the durability exercise? Before, I was able to beat it fine but now if I get them in yellow it continues to go.

I haven't put a lot of time into the game but, though I found myself right confused having an Extreme Rules match between Punk and Nitro, I'm having fun with the new controls and styles... but I'm basing this "fun" on the idea I'm going to learn to accept them, much like I did with analog control and UCMs last year. It was neat to just randomly light a 2x4 on fire, I'll give it that. Using L1 to run is taking some getting used to, but holy crap, running is awesome this year! It's like... Ultimate Control Running or something. I just assumed it was standard running controls again this year but was happy to see you can literally run circles around your opponent. I also like not bashing buttons during a submission hold.

I started doing 24/7 mode as a GM instead of a wrestler so I have no comments with the complaints there (though I've read some reviews saying it's better than last year, not worse, so I guess it's personal opinion). I'm having fun micromanaging ECW and failing at action movies with HHH (but having "big success" with Kelly Kelly) but I can see this getting old. One thing that is pissing me off is the training exercises. I never schedule them because the one time I did I failed all 3 and haven't clue one what I'm supposed to bother doing.

I think it's funny that complaints about this series are often how it's stale and nothing is ever added or upgraded over the previous addition, but when things are added or changed it's a huge complaint too. Of course I'm just generalizing the real issue: bugs, glitches, and problems from previous additions NOT being corrected and left the same while the new things that are added are not liked. Apparently the Anaconda Vice is the Kenton Bomb, says Tazz... so that problem still exists. Do they still announce tag teams as one person too?

The bad comentary programming has been a funny issue for a while. I and many others mentioned it earlier in the thread, but I still find it funny that nearly everything Rhyno did in one of the earlier games made the announcers scream GORE GORE GORE! I think the same game had TAZZMISSION called for anything that Tazz did.

I'm still kind of iffy about picking this up. The graphics look amazing on the 360 and PS3, but the animations are still lacking. I believe I saw some of the same animations that have been used since the first SD. To those that have it, is that "stiff as a board" falling animation still in the game? Always hated that.

Commentary will never be as bad as it was in Just Bring It. I figured out of all the SD games, I would never touch it again and gave it away to EB. Now I'll never hear that disjointed commentary again.

No one can defeat ..... DDT!

One thing about the commentary in Just Bring It, was that regardless of how silly of a name the move had, nearly every move in the game was called by the commentators.

DANGEROUS DDT!

DANGEROUS DRIVER!

My favorite screwy commentary in SDvR 2007 was J.R. calling the Catatonic a "Spinning You-Rain-Gee Slam".

My views on the game are as follows, in no particular order:

1. I like the struggle submission system. It adds a little bit of strategy to the submissions, as opposed to the button tapping or slide bar from the previous games.

2. I don't like the fact that the vast majority of submission moves in the game are NOT worked into the Struggle Submission system. Monumentally annoying. Why even bother including the anklelock or the cloverleaf or the tazzmission if they're not submissions? There are only about 15 total submissions in the new system. Lazy bastards.

3. The new UCM reversals are great.

4. I like the fighting styles. It makes the wrestlers actually feel different in play. You don't play a high-flyer like you would a brawler or submissionist, or you lose. I think the fighting styles they assigned to the existing wrestlers are a little questionable. Luckily, you can fix these. HHH a powerhouse?

5. Why are there fewer moves? There should be more moves, not less. Even though a few new moves (mostly new guys' finishers) have been included, this does not compensate for a loss of a lot of cool moves. The submissions were especially hard hit. I know that hardly anyone in the E uses submissions anymore, but still. Further, each wrestler has fewer move slots available. I know that most wrestlers on the roster have very few moves outside of punches and kicks, but what if I want to make someone with talent?

6. 24/7 mode is annoying. I can only raise my CAW's stats 1% at a time? I can't rest without forfeiting popularity? There's a storyline about starring in a movie, but I can apparently do that any day of the week? I can never challenge for the intermediate titles or tag titles at all? Gah.

7. The gameplay is enjoyable. It's not perfect, but it is fun, more so with a person than against the AI, which is as dumb as ever.

8. ECW Extreme Rules matches are awesome. The weapon selection is gold. While these are a lot less fun if you're not a hardcore guy, the awesomeness of this match is not to be discounted.

9. I hate having unlockables. I want to be able to play the game with whatever character or move set or arena I want as soon as I pay $60 for the damn game. I especially hate having to go through GM mode.

Those are my thoughts so far.

It's very annoying how they take the time to have Styles and JBL record new commentary... then just hand them the same lines as everyone else. Good Lord was it awful to hear Joey repeat Michael Cole's usual line of "it's the SPORTS ENTERTAINMENT business!" as a response to Tazz chiding you for taunting. That was kind of made up for when later in the match, Tazz said the seemingly random shoot-ish comment "When I was a wrestler, or as they say in THIS company, in-ring performer...". That amused me.

Justin Roberts did some damn fine recording for ring introductions, further making me not understand why everyone on the net hates him.

In answer to my own question from earlier, they apparently did fix the tag team name intro problem from 07. Not sure how it would work for new stables, but for the pre-made ones (or at least Rated RKO), you get "total combined weight", both names, and the team name.

I agree with you about the commentary. Although there's a lot of good commentary from JBL in the cut scenes, the match commentary painfully, sickeningly, horrifically blows. Honestly, if they can't do a better job than that, then dump the whole thing. I especially hate when they start talking about people who aren't even in the damn match.

Also, does anyone else miss the ability from SD! games past to name your finisher, and have the name appear on screen when you hit it? I think it was in SD! 1 or 2.

So, before I even open this, anyone want to tell me what you have to do to get unlimited experience points (or this year's equivalent) for all your CAWs? Cos fuck playing them all up one at a time, fuck that.

Here's what you do first. Go into 24/7 mode and pick the Undertaker or some other pregenerated, high-rated guy (HHH). Page down to Wrestlemania and simulate everything until that date, then simulate WM. That'll give you a ton of cash, which you will need. That should unlock the "kits" in the WWEshop. The kits give you attribute boosts for your CAW. You pick the one for your primary fighting style. The premium kits give you an overall score of 80 with emphasis on the attributes most important to your style, the starter kits give you an overall of 60 with emphasis in the primary attributes. You have to buy the kit for each CAW separately, though, so if you want to create lots of CAWs right off the bat, I'd simulate the 24/7 mode multiple times to build up cash. There are no unlimited points that I've found yet, just the kits in the shop. After that, you can pretty easily build your guys stats up through training. Much less frustrating that way.

Or you can simulate through 24/7 as you said, make your first caw, buy the kit, and then you can copy that caw and make your other caws. The other caws attributes will be the same as your first and all you would have to do is change everything, but you wouldnt have to simulate time and time again.

That could work as well, but the attributes would always be exactly the same for each CAW...you can't alter the stats at all except through the training or buying other kits. So if your first guy bought the Submission kit, all your guys would have submission as their primary attribute.
