NYU 0 Report post Posted July 19, 2007 Yea the WWE needs to bring Heyman back so he can make snide remarks to Stephanie and the rest of the creative team. People act like it's Steph's fault but if someone made the comments to you that he made to her you'd hate the guy too. So what are some of the specific comments Heyman made to Stephanie? He basically called her a moron........ Then there was the comment where she was trying to explain something and said something like "if you were in my position" and he actually said to her "No I wouldn't understand, I built a company from scratch with hard work you were handed one by your father" or something along those lines......I can see why she doesn't like the guy. Enigma 0 Report post Posted July 19, 2007 If Stephanie is supposed to be "safe," then enjoy nothing changing, Vince. The beginning of the gradual decrease in ratings from the 6-7s area to the 3s can be traced back to Stephanie taking over as head writer in Fall 2000. The company line is that it was due to the changeover to TNN/Spike TV, but Steph's crappy booking is the real culprit. The first sign of trouble was the HHH/Steph/Kurt angle that was aborted for no given reason (but probably due to HHH not wanting to put over Angle). Just give Paul F'N Heyman 12 months of the totalitarian booking power Vince Russo had in 1997-1999 and see if anything happens. Could it honestly hurt? cabbageboy 0 Report post Posted July 19, 2007 Well, I actually do attribute the initial big ratings hit to the TNN move. They were drawing high 6s and low 7s in April-May 2000, but then in one felt swoop they moved to TNN and were down to 5.0 in a hurry. I took a look at the ratings through 2001 and you know what is sad? The idiotic Two Man Power Trip actually was doing pretty good ratings. Then it started going down to 4.2 or so when they went with the Jericho/Benoit push against Austin. I think they waited almost too long to launch the Invasion, those months in between the buyout and the actual Invasion killed the momentum.

Atticus Chaos 0 Report post Posted July 19, 2007 Heyman also said "Fuck you" to Stephanie's face. When called into Vince's office to explain, he said yeah, he was sorry that he said it... because he meant to say "Go fuck yourself" instead. from the torch/observer via unnamed sources I'm sure. Actually, a guy on the writing teem, who was there at the time, told the story of it in a lecture a year or so later after he left wwe. The following is an excerpt from the book, Hardcore History: The Extremely Unauthorized Story of ECW Ranjan Chhibber is an assistant professor of honors and film studies at George Washington University. He was also an ECW fan in the mid-1990's who later got to work with Heyman when both were members of WWE's creative team for three months in 2004. Chhibber said he could not discuss particulars of creative meetings or of particular ideas, but he did say that Heyman was an odd fit with the other members of the writing team, which included everyone from ex-wrestlers to people with television experience, but no wrestling background. "I learned the ropes from him," Chhibber said. "I had been a big fan of ECW, So I gravitated toward him. His booking style agreed with what my vision of wrestling should be ---- more intensive versus all the gimmicks. He was a good mentor to me. He didn't have to take me under his wing, but he did." Chhibber said the real Paul Heyman was very different from the overbearing zealot he appeared to be on television. "I hate to sound like a mark but I can't believe how brilliant this guy is." "He was reading books by (Princeton University religion and African-American studies professor) Cornell West, when none of the other writers knew who that was. I imagine it was unusual to see ---- here was the passionate liberal surrounded by very conservative republicans in WWE for a couple hours every day, and he would debate the others, especially right before the 2004 presidential election. This guy was a guy who could've debated professors. He defeated everybody in the room in the two hours they were together. And Paul was not the politically correct liberal that's become the cliche, but he genuinely was a very caring person." Heyman's passion eventually led to his outster from the writing team. He crafted a three-way feud (between the teams of Chris Benoit & Kurt Angle, Chavo & Eddy Guerrero, and Edge & Rey Mysterio) on Smackdown! that was creating genuine buzz, but he soon ran afoul of another McMahon ---- Stephanie. Vince McMahon's Daughter grew up around wrestling and seemed to be the one groomed to take over the company from her father. According to people working behind the scenes, she also loved to display ruthlessness, one of her father's most valued traits. Starting in 2001, Heyman also displayed a trait the elder McMahon claimed to have valued ---- honesty. Surrounding Vince was a cadre of yes-men, people only too happy to tell him how brilliant every one of his ideas was. Heyman was not the only one close to McMahon willing to be brutally honest, but he was the most vocal. By 2003, Stephanie & Heyman were already at different ends, creatively speaking. As head writer, she apparently believed that Heyman was moving things in directions that were not necessarily her directions. Heyman appeared to believe that Stephanie had no concept of the business into which she had been born. Their conflicts came to a head in a writers meeting when Stephanie told Heyman about a segment she wanted on an upcoming show. The idea was one that Vince himself had shot down, and Heyman told her that for that very reason he did not want to include it. Her response, according to one WWE insider, was, "You can put it in there, or I'll put it in there." Heyman said that if those were his choices, he would prefer she put her pet segment into the show, so he would not have to explain to her father, the company chairman, why he violated Vince McMahon's edict. Stephanie grew flustered and began to tell Heyman, "Paul, If I were you ----" Heyman cut her off & reportedly said, "But you're not me, because you've never built anything up from scratch, you've never had to fight back for your very survival, so you're definitely not ----" This time, it was Stephanie's turn to cut off Heyman, as she appeared to become her shrieking television character, leaning right into Heyman's face and screaming, "Shut up!" Heyman looked right back at her & said, "Fuck off." As if daring Heyman to repeat the epithet that had stunned the rest of the writing team into silence, Stephanie said, "Excuse me?" Heyman asked her which of his two words that she had been unable to discern, and she stormed out of the room. The next day, Heyman found himself in another meeting with Stephanie, this time joined by a WWE human resources executive. Shortly, thereafter, Heyman found himself explaining the heated exchange to Vince himself. Heyman reminded McMahon that the WWE chairman would never stand for someone getting in his face as Stephanie had gotten into Heyman's. Ultimately, Heyman admitted to McMahon that he should not have said what he did. However, he told McMahon that was only because he had meant to tell Stephanie to go fuck herself when "Fuck off!" came out instead. To the surprise of no one, Heyman found himself off of the writing team. He would go on to have brief stints both in front of the camera (playing the role of Smackdown! GM, ironically replacing Stephanie in the on-air position in a role similiar to the one Tod Gordon had played in ECW) and behind the scenes. After providing the blueprint for the ECW: One Night Stand ppv in June 2005, Heyman was sent to Louisville, Kentucky to write TV for Ohio Valley Wrestling, one of WWE's feeder circuits for trainees. Heyman replaced Jim Cornette, whose career as an in-ring manager & upstart promoter oddly mirrored Heyman's career in many ways. Some in the industry saw the move as a final slap in the face from the McMahon family, but Heyman turned it into a feather in his cap, by making OVW the best booked wrestling show i the country. By late 2005, Raw & Smackdown! were unwatchable as often as not, but for viewers in the area, under Heyman's tutelage, OVW was must-see westling TV. As if raising a middle finger to all the critics of his booking, Heyman built programs that quickly led to increases in both crowd size & crowd fervor, proving he could book successfully without a cutting-edge production duo & without the monstrous talent budget of WWE. The time when they lost their TV deal, PPV buys dropped like a rock, and the company went out of business? They lost their TV deal due to WWE swiping their spot, the PPV sales will have dropped from a lack of exposure, and the lack of PPV revenue plus failure to pay what was owed to them lead them to go out of business. I got a video of their 2nd last PPV, Massacre on 34th Street, from eBay a few years ago, and there was some very good stuff on it. Dreamer vs. Anderson was a fun hardcore brawl, Tajiri/Whipwreck vs Kash/Super Crazy was a very good match, and I marked out for Rhino choking Spike til he puked. Their stuff was strong til the end. Jingus 0 Report post Posted July 19, 2007 Still, the shows of that time period lost even more money than usual for ECW. Artistic success or not, Dreamer was a financial failure as a booker. NoCalMike 0 Report post Posted July 20, 2007 Paul Heyman's comments to Stephanie McMahon are way besides the point. The issue at hand here is the ratings and how to get the ratings up. You do that by putting forth a compelling show that is booked well. Paul Heyman has proven time and time again, in almost any situation that he can take a roster of wrestlers and make a good storyline. If Vince wants a better booked product, he has Paul Heyman, who by the way is getting paid by WWE currently, at his helms. Vince can choose to keep him at home because he makes the rest of the creative team "uncomfortable" or he can go up to every single one of them and ask them, "What in the flying fuck have you booked decently lately" and get a big kick out of the dead silence he will get in return that no one has an answer. Maybe, I dunno just MAYBE, the rest of the creative team should have a little more respect for Heyman, who can actually book worth a damn, instead of running around like an inner circle of highschool girls and bad-mouthing him to the boss behind his back. Maybe when Heyman has good ideas, and they KNOW IT, they should stand in unison with Heyman when confronted by Steph and Vince, instead of caving like the little bitch yes-men they come off as. I will never argue that Paul Heyman is easy to work with, and can't be a prick at times, but WWE is basically boring as fuck right now and he is the best option out there, and he is already on the goddamn payroll. Jingus 0 Report post Posted July 20, 2007 It's pretty proven that the only way to REALLY spike ratings is to get a Real Superstar (Hogan, Austin, the nWo as a whole) and then surround them with interesting supporting cast that we haven't seen a million times already (Piper, Rock, Crow Sting) and a few interesting feuds that are kinda new and unique while still basically following the established formulas (Hogan vs. Andre, Austin vs. McMahon, WCW vs. nWo), and then ride the gravy train til the wheels come off.
