Guest Soriano's Torn Quad Report post Posted September 6, 2007 No, there is never a dearth of prospects with that team. That's my whole point! Anyone can contribute with the Cardinals. It's unreal.

skullman80 0 Report post Posted September 7, 2007 The Pirates fired GM Dave Littlefield. Long overdue, but with that being said the Pirates are never going to get better until the Nuttings(owners) sell to someone who gives a shit.
Prophet of Mike Zagurski 0 Report post Posted September 7, 2007 Yes, the Pirates problems were due to the GM. Not because of the owner who refuses to spend money. If voters can vote to spend money to build arenas, why can't they vote to take over teams? Actually, what I really want to happen is... I want a new law to be passed saying that if a team has not had a winning record or made the post season in the last decade, public money should not be given to the team. The Pirates look like they have one of the most beautiful parks in Majors, yet an owner who won't open up his wallet.
Cheech Tremendous 0 Report post Posted September 7, 2007 MLB's bad day continues as SI.com is reporting that Troy Glaus received shipments of steroids from 2003 to 2004.
EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted September 7, 2007 There is more to blame than the owner and their payroll. In the last 15 years of the amateur draft the Pirates drafted Andy Rice, Jermaine Allensworth, Charles Peterson, Mark Ferris, Chad Hermansen, Kris Benson, J.J. Davis, Clint Johnston, Sean Burnett, Bobby Bradley, John Van Benschoten, Bryan Bullington, Paul Maholm, Neil Walker, Andrew McCutchen and Brad Lincoln. One hitter who got more than 500 at bats, and two pitchers with more than twenty career wins. Two number one overall picks, eight in the top ten, and the best they can claim is Kris Benson. When they did spend, they gave out awful contracts to Pat Meares and Kevin Young. They acquired Matt Morris from the Giants for no discernable reason whatsoever. Any executive should be able to improve their team just by having good draft position. The Pirates have failed in every aspect. I dare say they are the worst run organization in baseball. Cheech Tremendous 0 Report post Posted September 7, 2007 All good points Al, but the tightness of ownership permeates the entire organization. The baseball ops staff is the most under funded in the game and seen as a joke by other organizations. High picks or not, it's tough to build an organization when you have poor scouting, lousy player personnel and non-existent development programs. They also tend to underspend in the draft. A good top-ten pick doesn't hurt, but drafts are won and lost in the later rounds where good scouting and tough signs can stock an organization full of cheap talent. Slayer 0 Report post Posted September 7, 2007 Other than Jason Kendall, I can't name any long-term Pirates player from the post-Bonds era
The Man in Blak 0 Report post Posted September 7, 2007 Pie's young yet, don't count him out. They have a few good prospects, enough that they don't rank in the bottom third as an organization. The only problem the Cubs have is that their starters are nearly all 30 or older. No one looks ready to drop off a cliff though. Given the Cards' relative dearth of prospects, I wouldn't sweat it. The St. Louis farm system has a poor reputation from the earlier years in Jocketty's tenure, but the last few drafts for the Cardinals (w/Jeff Luhnow) haven't been too bad. Colby Rasmus, Chris Perez, Brian Anderson, Adam Ottavino, PJ Walters, and Tyler Herron all look like solid prospects at this point, with Rasmus and Perez likely having an impact on the big league club next season. skullman80 0 Report post Posted September 7, 2007 In fairness to Pittsburgh, Bullinger, Van Benschoten, and Lincoln have all had serious shoulder and elbow problems. Van Benschoten should have never been turned into a full out pitcher, should of left his a field playe. Bullington is garbage. The Pirates drafting has been ATROCIOUS for years. Period. End of Story. They won't even take the best player when they are available...see the Moskos over Weiters selection this year. The Pirates are the worst run team in all of sports, and they only way they will ever get better if if they start form scratch and get an ownership group who gives two shits, because the Nuttings don't. Littlefield made some bad decisions, and he deserved to be fired, but he is far from the only problem.
KingPK 0 Report post Posted September 8, 2007 (edited) Man, the Orioles can't even start a bench-clearing brawl correctly. I love how Julian Tavarez is trying to be the peacemaker by talking to Cabrera (who balked to score a run and then threw the next pitch at Pedroia's head). Why is Cabrera not tossed from this game? EDIT 2: He is gone. Time to feast on the O's bullpen! Edited September 8, 2007 by KingPK
