Well...I think that we just had a thread about this a while ago, but I'll go ahead and answer even though I'm probably going to get flamed like crazy.

 

I took "gay rights" to mean gay marriage. I don't hate homosexuals and don't have anything against them personally. I knew several in college, even was neighbors with one, and they were generally fine people. As a Christian though, I can't condone homosexuality personally, so I cannot condone gay marriage. As an American, I think people should be able to live how they want to...if you want to be gay, that's your right and it's none of my business. I just don't think the government should put a gay relationship on the same level as a heterosexual marriage.

Fantastic. That's the exact mentality that got my state this "gay marriage" constitutional amendment that won't allow civil unions and is now being used as an excuse to deny domestic partner benefits to employees of our two major universities. Now UK and UofL are not going to be able to attract talented faculty because Kentucky looks like a podunk gay bashing backwater.

Sorry, I'm a little on edge about this issue because

a. I feel so strongly about it and

b. I am heavily concerned with the current gubernatorial election, in which the "family values" incumbent is pulling out all the stops

Quite frankly, I can give a shit that he wants to have sex with another man, that is his personal business. It is more of a reflection on society that he felt the need to sneak around and do it in a men's restroom.

My feeling is fuck all married people, gay or straight. Why should the govermnet give you ANY help because you got married. Fuck you. You aren't special. But if you are going to give tax breaks and other advantages to some married people, then you can't tell part of the population that you can't be married to another concenting adult because you don't feel like it.

 

Fun fact: In georgia, its perfectly legal to marry your cousin, but two non related gay people can't get married. FUNNY.

I actually think they should get the right to marry now, as Marriage ain't nothing but a bullshit business that makes a ton of money for this country. Plus, with even more additions to the divorce rate, it could only benefit us economically.

If they wanted to let them have civil unions or whatever and get the same benefits, I wouldn't really care.

So what if they want to get married in a Hindu or Muslim or Buddhist ceremony or something. Or what if they, and here's a crazy idea, want a non-religious marriage. Does that offend your beliefs?

I'm saying that the anti-gay backlash of 2004, which I imagine you probably supported if your state had an amendment up for vote, led to the curtailment of things like civil unions and domestic partner benefits, which majorities tend to support.

 

Civil unions laws now can't ever exist in Kentucky (barring repeal of the let's hate on gays amendment) because of the gay baiting of 2004.

Well what it comes down to is: Is marriage an institution of religion or the state? Religion has a right to discriminate, the state does not. Since you can get married legally by a judge, without a speck of religion involved, methinks that marriage does exist outside of religion and in those cases is sponsored by the state, therefore it should be illegal to discriminate against gay couples.

I guess I would join others in thinking the government getting out of the marriage business as a whole would probably be a good idea. There are plenty of good reasons for tax breaks for married couples, though.
