There's a terrific article in the New York Times today by Michael Lewis regarding the peculiar social status of NFL kickers. It's a great read.

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/10/28/sports/p...nted=1&_r=3

I've never really gotten the hate for kickers. To me, it's probably the hardest mental game in football. More often then not, if you are out there kicking a field goal, the game is resting solely on you. Not on a combination of other people like other positions. It's just you. The only help you get is someone holds the ball, and you have a line holding the opponents back. Everything about the kick as far as succeeding is only you. On top of that, you are ONLY brought out to kick every so often.

I think that may be the main issue. In a lot of fans' eyes, the kicker does nothing for fifty-five minutes or so, lounging on the bench while the "real" players are out there getting their asses kicked up and down the field. If you're only going to come into the game a few times and almost never even get touched, you damn well better be able to nail that kick.

That's a guess, anyway.

Ha, semantics. You got yourself a shitty QB dude. Trust me, I know, I've been forced to deal with Losman for years.

It takes 4-5 years to make a good NFL QB... I know a lot of people have lost patience given how certain guys can just come in and start running things.

Losman for years??!! You make it seem like he's been there for 6 years sucking shit, have some patience. Fuck, guys like Troy Aikman, John Elway, and Steve Young wouldn't be able to make it in today's high standards must win now league. Eli Manning is feeling that now.

Three years dude, that's a pretty long time, especially since there's no progress and he actually seems to be getting worse. He has weapons and a decent line (better than in years past) but throws up ducks, and just seems to heave it when he feels like it. I'm more patient than most, but there's no point in waiting for a shitty QB to get even shittier. I'm glad they're going with Edwards, who got the Bill Walsh seal of approval before he kicked the bucket. Random thought: Bill Walsh also said Brees was the better pick of the draft than Vick. He was right, but it's still funny how that played out.

But how can we relate the game to the Ravens? That's what we all are dying to hear.

The Ravens played the 2nd Thursday Night game on NFL Network last year and lost to the Bengals.

A good national broadcaster is disinterested, a bad one is uninterested. Bryant is the latter.

Almost time to fire up the radio.

Wayne Larrivee > Bryant Gumbel, and your mental picture is probably > NFL Public Access.

THE DAGGER!

However, I give credit to the aforementioned bad channel by avoiding any bad sounds during the moment of silence by COMPLETELY POTTING THE AUDIO DOWN. Simply stellar.

Well, so far NFL.com seems to be doing a live stream of the pregame. Let's see if it remains up when the game itself actually starts.

Edit: and the stream is still on!

Edit #2: Fuck that stream. They showed the whole Packers' first drive to make you think it's gonna be a stream of the game, then they went to a studio show during commercials, and are STILL at the studio show, promising a "live look in coming soon"

Bryant Gumbel is the worst announcer I have heard in years. I honestly wish the NFL Network would have hired Summerall do cover these games.

I'd take Gumbel any day over some of the schlocks that do games on other networks. I don't get the Gumbel hate at all. Different strokes I get. He is most definietly better than Joe Buck or Musberger.

The Joe Buck hate I totally understand. I just don't like the way he broadcasts games. To me he doesn't have the voice quality to announce football games. His voice is to soft.

It's like Kermit the Frog is calling the game. He just doesn't have an appealing voice for PBP.
