I think the amazing thing about this is that people are actually unhappy they saw a team go unbeaten in the regular season. If the dreaded Cowboys had done it I'd still have to give them credit for doing something I never would have thought I'd have the chance to see. Of course I'd root for all of their playoff opponents to give them that one loss 73-0, but I'd still respect their accomplishment.

Props to the Pats for going 16-0, I may never see that done again in my lifetime. On another note, the real season starts next week in the playoffs and the AFC is not going to be an easy road for New England to navigate. Joseph Addai could definitely give New England problems in the AFC title game if the Colts get there as the outdoor weather should reign in some of New England's passing attack (albeit not all of it). Hell, I think even Jacksonville could give New England some trouble in the divisional round.

I also liked the 15-yard personal foul against the Patriots that was revised to a 15-yard personal foul against the Giants for no readily apparent reason, and of course, the eye gouge non-call. The Patriots' "dynasty" shall surely be remembered for its wheelbarrows of goofy-ass officiating.

Excessive celebration isn't borderline when it takes 30 seconds and you jump on a teammate so he can lift you into the air.

 

They didn't call a fucking poke to the eye as unsportsmanlike conduct.

 

They called unnecessary roughness when someone tripped over a camerman's foot while he was being stared at.

 

Never mind that a drive that was stopped on third and long was continued for an illegal contact call that was borderline at best on a play where Brady never had a chance to throw the ball.

See, here's the thing.

 

As much as I hate the Patriots, and I really hate the Patriots; as much as Brian hates the Romans, I have a really difficult time expressing my disgust with them. No idea why. I think it's the novelty and awe of seeing a team go 16-0 and rewrite every page of the history book in the process.

 

My issue with hating on them relentlessly is due to how karmic the past two seasons of NFL football as been for me.

 

Last year, it was my two all-time favorite sports team playing for the championship, and this year has good money on it being my two most hated. Ain't that some shit?

I probably wouldn't hate the whole thing so much if I wasn't inundated with Patriot love from all sides: the New England-based national sports media, a board that's a de facto Boston sports board, so on, so forth. If I must endure the Patriots in the Super Bowl I better not also have to endure the Cowboys with Tony Romo. That is pretty much the epitome of a heel vs. heel matchup. At least with NE vs. GB there would be the cool "Can Favre win one more big one and beat an invincible juggernaut?" storyline. And to be honest, we already know that NE will crush the Cowboys. I could stomach the Colts vs. Cowboys, Patriots vs. Packers, Colts vs. Packers....but please not Patriots vs. Cowboys.

 

It feels bizarre saying this since I've never really hated the Cowboys, but I think this year that they are wildly lucky and Romo is insanely overrated. The Patriots may have had some breaks, but at least have won with their own skills for the most part. I've quite literally seen Buffalo and Detroit hand Dallas games. The Cowboys are basically a slightly more talented version of the Bears with Rex Grossman.

Belichick asks the referee who the unsportsmanlike conduct call was on, saw it was Rodney Harrison, and instantly sent him to the bench for a play or two. A nice way of not only admonishing Rodney for a dumb penalty, but also again telling the rest of the team that nobody is above anybody else.

Let's not forget the Steelers won it as a 6 seed. I think Jacksonville has an absolutely great shot of making the Super Bowl, but that's pretty much it (NE/Indy/JAX being the only three I would expect to make it on the AFC side), the NFC is a crapshoot and anyone could make it to the Super Bowl from that conference. Well New York Giants has to be excluded because Eli Manning will not put together 3 wins in a row in the playoffs against the cream of the 2007 NFC crop.
